Eddie Lawson won more world championships (4) and was able to win it after switching to Honda in 1989. He was the favorite to win in 1990 but he was injured early season at the USGP due to his brake pads falling out. I think Lawson is criminally forgotten compared to other riders of this era.

couldn't have said it better! not to mention being railed from behind by Doohan ar Suzuka the race before.

Not by anyone who was a fan then. Lawson, Rainey, Schwantz, Doohan all fantastic.

I dont think anyone watching is doubting Lawsons ability mate . His 4 World championships speak for themselves . A calculated , smooth refined rider who made very few mistakes . He wasnt a rider laying too many biackies on the tarmac either . He had a knack of getting the best out of his tyres right to the end of the race . A great rider who will never be forgotten . 👍 Regards

HE was SOO good . I don't recall his 250 gp time but i did notice him come in and get 3rd in the championship straight up in '88 . As an Australian i remember watching him in practice for the '89 GP at our Phillip Island . The Aussie media were all about Gardner , Lawson , and Doohan while Wayne was all business out on the track . He was ringing the neck out of that lucky Strike YZR500 . It was shaking it's head and snorting coming out of turn one at full noise but he never backed off one bit . I remember telling my mates that day that he was going to win it . Not a expert but you could tell rear grip was becoming a problem with 2 laps go in the race and Gardner only just beat him that day . Wild scenes . He was an awesome rider . I was and still am a big , big fan . As an Aussie you would probably think i would have Doohan or Gardner or Magee or Stoner pics up in the shed . Nope , but i do have a big one of Rainey .Wayne Rainey , I salute you

Wow, what an amazing memory and tribute to Rainey! The way you captured his determination and skill at Phillip Island is incredible-it’s moments like these that define true legends. Having his picture in your shed says it all. Wayne Rainey truly deserves all the admiration. Salute to a phenomenal rider and hero!

I was a massive Rainey fan. He worked hard at being a perfectionist. He was continually working to improve the setup but also had the skill to override the bike and get more out of it than should be possible. He was a VERY clean rider and made the machinery he was on a LOT better than it was. The only rider I have seen with the same strength for perfectionism was Lorenzo... very different characters, very different era's but similar eye for perfection. Lorenzo and Rainey's lap times were unfathomably consistent and quick. Lap after lap.... Rainey was always my hero! I just started my racing career in 93 when his accident took everything away. I was totally inspired by him. There is only one other rider who amazed me like him... Troy Bayliss!

Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt tribute to Rainey-he truly was a master of precision and consistency. His ability to push the limits of both himself and the bike is what set him apart. The comparison to Lorenzo is spot-on; both had that incredible knack for perfection and consistency, though from very different eras.

The 1991 German 500cc race was won by Kevin Schwartz, not Rainey.

Quick correction: In the video, I mistakenly mentioned that Rainey won the 1991 German 500cc race. The actual winner was Kevin Schwantz. Thanks to the keen-eyed viewers who caught that-appreciate your support in keeping the details spot on!

From a #34 Schwantz fan..... Rainey was Mr Perfect. And if it wasn't for Wayne's misfortune Schwantz (probably) wouldn't have been champion

Totally agree, Wayne Rainey was an incredible talent and a true force on the track.

Mick Doohan said Schwantz was the fastest rider he ever raced against, but that he crashed a lot. Interesting fact is I think both Schwantz and Rainey won the same number of races.

You're absolutely right-Rainey raced in the 500cc class, which was the precursor to what we know as MotoGP today. Thanks for pointing that out!

I've never seen anyone ride a bike as hard as Rainey rode the inferior (to the "big bang" Honda) YZR at the start of '92.

Forgotten? I think not! Wayne wasn’t the most talented rider. What he was, however, was the most determined rider. The man personified the American spirit. He always pushed harder. He lived MotoGP. It was sad when he got injured.

You call the 500GP bike a beast, yet you don't mention the TZ750 !! Maybe think about how lap times became SIGNIFICANTLY lower on the 500's !!
@MotoGP_Zone17 күн бұрын
"Great point! The TZ750 was an absolute monster-raw power and barely-contained chaos. The 500GP bikes took that legacy and refined it, balancing beastly performance with cutting-edge tech, which helped bring those lap times down dramatically. Both bikes are legends in their own right, but which one do you think was the ultimate test of a rider’s skill?"
