I just helped my 77 year old dad go through his bag from Vietnam. He had kept it tucked away for 55 years and it's been a very emotional process. My man went to Iraq and he doesn't talk about it much but I know it had a deep impact on him that he struggles with daily. Met him shortly before deployment and we had so much fun together. Best dates ever. When he got back he wasnt sure I was still waiting for him. After all he went through the first thing he told me was that he thought he had lost me forever! He didnt know I thought of him daily. So many of these young men get cheated on when they need support the most. Its awful. If you're with someone who has been through this please let them know they're appreciated and whenever they're ready to talk listen with an open mind and heart. They had to do and see some crazy things at such a young age too. PTSD is painful and difficult to live with. Love, understanding, and support is vital.

My son was 18 when he went into the Marines. I begged him not to go because I grew up during the Viet Nam War and I didn’t want to be one of those moms who has someone knock on her door telling her that her son was dead. He said he would do whatever it takes, including giving his life, so people could live free. 14 months later they indeed knocked on my door to tell me my son was dead. I am sure if I listened hard enough today I would be able to still hear the screams of deep sorrow that came from my broken heart floating around in the heavens. Now, as I look at the condition of this country he loved so much, I often feel he died for nothing. I hope and pray that the sacrifices made by so many who also gave their lives for us did not die for nothing and our country will come back stronger than ever. Rest in peace my son as well to your Marine brothers who stepped into heaven with you that night. Semper Fi, 🇺🇸Oohrah

The hat and uniform seemed to be just hanging on him like too big...his " childish " little face, his eyes looked like they had witnessed things someone at that age shouldn't experience or see, due to him having to report for duty just one day after 911, God bless everyone that served! I'm from Germany. My grandfather ( who still lives) was Born in 1930. On the 17. Of March the govenor of his little town (2000 souls) came tobhis school with recruting officers. They said all boys between the age of 12-16 have to go with them. They drove to a forrest near Bremen where they had to defend it against the allies. He never shot a with a weapon before and was allowed to practice onlytwo shots before the combat because they didn't have much ammunition. In combat he was shot in his shoulder and 3 of his friends died... He told me that after they surrendert, the allies where shocked that they fought kids. As my grandpa was health again and the war was over starvation bagan and lastet for more them 7 years.😢 Today he is 93 years old and still walks his rounds in our Village. He was and is a strong and brave men who was forced to fight in a already lost war. I'm proud to be his grandson💪

I had a veteran who fought in Germany towards the end of WW2 as a patient in 1996. He said the young Germans they fought towards the end were the bravest most difficult unforgiving warriors they had run into. He said most would not surrender and fought till they were completely wiped out. He said they were poorly equipped but fought like demons. Many units thought they had run into SS units but they turned out to be young males.

Previous years spent indoctrinated in the Hitler Jungend turned many of them into National Socialist zealots. It's very hard to negotiate with someone who has never known any other life. My grandfather experienced this first hand in Huertgen Forest, Aachen, the Bulge, etc. He just prayed that I'd never experience war in my lifetime...I'm sorry your prayers weren't answered, Grandpa. Desert Shield/Storm got me...but not nearly as bad as he got it.
@gunterangel
@gunterangel Жыл бұрын
Kind regards from Germany ! This comment of yours and that of the original poster are both spot on. Many of these still naive kid-soldiers had been heavily indoctrinated by the regime from the HJ onwards. And when the allied armies invaded the German territories at last, these brainwashed boys really thought, it would be their heroic duty to fight for their homeland to the last bullet, even when most of their parents certainly knew, that the war was already lost for Germany and each further sacrifice would be completely useless and without any sense. There are even stories about Geman mothers, who desperately tried to hinder their teenage sons to react to the drafting letter and tried to lock them up in the cellarroom. What mad results to the minds of the young German boys that upbringing with this constant ideological brainwashing had ! They grew up during the Nazi-regime, knowing nothing else than their stupid propaganda . Swiss director Bernhard Wicki had shown this with great and gritty authenticity in his famous movie , "Die Brücke" (1959), ( highly recommended !) where he shows a group of German teenage boys, who in the last days of WW2, when the war for Germany was objectively and completely lost, still tried fanatically to hinder an American platoon to cross the bridge near their small town, resulting in the completely useless deaths of nearly the whole group of the German kid-soldiers and several American soldiers, whose reasonable plea for surrender to the boys the teenagers would only answer with furious armed violence. Wicki took great care in painting the social backgrounds of the boys, depicting their individual family situations and the general mood in the town among the adults in the last days of the war; the actual battle at the bridge is only in the last third of the movie. Wicki's description of the group dynamics among the boys is also psychologically very refinded. He shows, that not all were eager to become warriors, but how the most dominant and determined ones would draw the more fearful ones with them, when the battle started. It's a feature film, not a docu, but the story is based on actual events during the last days of WW2. The picture and its gritty realism impressed 20th.Century-Fox so much, that two years later they would also engage Wicki as co-director for the big US production "The Longest Day" about D-Day.

He walked from the funeral to the enlistment office. He told me so many war stories that gave me nightmares. God was with my dad while he was in Vietnam. He got the highest percentage of PTSD ELIGIBILITY RATE you could get for disability. Many days I would watch daddy sleep and he would have his arms sticking up, and trigger finger just shooting.. They mistreat and punish those kids without mercy.. Photographs and documents and many evidences had no responce! Never ever an idvestigation took place, Noone had tried to find out the responsible officers or soldiers... The crimes of the Allies never mentioned... Patton the great general wasa war criminal. I'm not 100% certain on that. I know one kid from a household of 3 children that was dangerous from the time he could walk, while his siblings were kind and gentle. My mom could correct any disobedient child she watched through her her entire life in ways that seemed magical. But even she gave up in the child after years of babysitting him. A teacher in high school i really couldn't stand earmed my complete respect one day when he attacked this kid and was slamming it's head into the ground repeatedly. Students had to pull the teacher off. I admire that teacher to this day and was sad he got fired for the incident. The child was evil to the core.

@@AvaBave many soldiers, especially in conflicts from the 20th century were conscripted or drafted. Towards the end of the war, as allied forces marched on Berlin, the German high command had children and old men defending Berlin. These people didn’t have a choice. They’d be shot for resisting. Even in unjust wars like the Vietnam War, there was a draft here in the US. It was illegal to “dodge” the draft. Hence the term Draft-Dodger. I get your sentiment but you can’t ask the “governments” to fight…what does that even mean? If you mean the metaphorical old men commanding young people to die, go listen to some 1970’s country rock or punk. Those themes are not new (nor necessarily wrong). It’s more complicated than asking “soldiers not to sign up”. Saying that is absolutely childish especially when you are talking about things like WW2. You are asking for the world to let Germany commit atrocities to its own people and millions of other innocents across Europe unopposed. It sounds uneducated.

Worst part is that kids in war are often the most dangerous. They have the hottest blood, the toughest skulls but the most malleable minds. Easy to groom. But worst of all, they have a face you cannot shoot up close. Fighting children in war is a losing battle, even if you survive through it.

And if you believe this to be true- tell that to the family of every single civilian we ever totlrtured, raped, pillaged and killed in Vietnam alone. Iraq too. We are no better than any other country, maybe worse, and every country on this planet would rather see a war time enemy dead than on trial and it was even more so like that back then. It is very possible these young men didnt ever make it home.
