(JUST SAWING) Stihl MS 500i vs the pack! MS440, MS460, MS461R, MS462R, and MS660!

A shortened version of the Stihl MS 500i taking on the MS440, MS460, MS461R, MS462R and the MS660!
I really just put the 660 in there to keep the MS500i from looking too good....
Was I ever surprised!

I was extremely surprised as well! The 460 has been and still is a longtime top of the favorites list for me. -in its defense, the 460 I used was WELL USED, maybe a fresher one would have done better. Absolutely blown away with the times of the 660...I just knew it would eat the 500i-man was I wrong???!!!

I would agree. I have a 460 & a 462 and they are equals. Not sure what happened with this 460.

460 and 660 look like you are super aggressive on the rakers. Slowing the cuts. The chips are way larger than the other saws.

Yes, the 400 is interesting....not sure if it is fuel injected though!...can't wait to find out a little more about it!

Stopping by to check out the short and sweet version! So I'm debating between the 462C and the 500i and I'm leaning towards the MS 462C; based on your experience handling both, which do you prefer? I know the 500i is a tad faster, but which one feels the best in your hands? I don't fell very much, I mostly buck logs for firewood. I currently have a 261 CM.

I haven't run the 462 enough to really form an opinion.....I robbed of parts off of it to get the 500i outfitted the way I wanted. Hope to get some more hands on time soon. If you need a saw soon, the 462 might be the way you are forced to go...the 500's are very limited in this area....(could be a year before the other one i have ordered gets here-according to the dealer)...seems most of the German built saws are going to be hard to get pretty soon. I'd be happy with either one...BUT, I really like the feel. acceleration, power to weight ratio on the 500!

@@aroundtheshop9615 I actually picked up the 462 yesterday. My local dealer had two of the 462 and the 500i. I didn't get to run them but the 462 just felt better in my hands so that's what I went with. Maybe one day I'll pick up the 500i as well. My local dealer has sold a lot of the 500i's but somehow they've managed to keep them in stock. They always have at least 1 every time I go in there.

I have owned my 500i for a year, after 10+ tanks of fuel, decided to get it ported with muffler mod. A small RPM increase after with noticeable torque gain. With a 32" light bar and 30" ash log, I can dig in the dogs and pull. Also just picked up a 400c, very happy with it. At 66cc the 400c is a great firewood saw. Taking it in to get ported next week. Trying to find some Hexa chain to try. I tried the new Husky chain on my old 291 with 20" bar and so far, very pleased. Does hold the top plate very well, yet seemed easy to file.

Twice I’ve seen a 440 beat the 500 and I’ve seen an 046 crush it. It appeared the rakers were too aggressive on the 460.

It is pretty crazy how well some of the older saws run! As far as the rakers, I used the same chains-straight out of the box for all of the cuts.

It's all got to do with tuning and how the saw is used each cut. This guy has no clue how to use a saw in my opinion. I can make a 241 outcut a 661 on camera if done right. From what I see it looks like he is used to cutting with a dull saw and thinks he's gotta push down with left arm to make saw cut.

Not really a comparison.. are all the sprockets ring or spur. 7-8 9 or what.. kinda a throw up in air if not all equipped the same way

Great point, The sprockets do make a huge difference!! All of the sprockets were 7 pin rim type...tried every way I could think of to equip them identically!! Thanks for the comment!
