As a kid playing this, I never jumped out of the way. I avoided the fireballs and then held down on the D Pad as either small or big Mario. Bowser will land on you and break the bricks, but you won't take any damage unless he spits out a stray fireball if you're too close to his mouth while bowser is over you.

When you have the P-wing, following the same path that you chose, you can fly up to the left, go down the screen to the left, and then fly back to the right. In that case Bowser will no longer spit flames

Your no death playthrough of Mario 3 inspired me to do my own one. That game is a childhood classic to me, and I felt like I owed beating this game without any deaths as some form of closure. It has made me appreciate this game even more, and seeing Bowser take that last fall was very accelerating. Going into that final fortress in a no death run was one of my favourite gaming experiences. And I owe it all to you, Mike. Keep doing what you are doing, and I always look forward to see you get invested in wild challenges that spice up games that are already a joy to play.

Speedrunners always kill Bowser with fire, they do this move where they jump on top of the door and start hammering the top of Bowser's head with fire the instant that he spawns, then after he jumps they run up to him immediately and finish him off before he has time to shoot even a single fireball. (Hammers are faster, but getting the hammer suit wastes too much time.) Also, there's actually two different Bowser battle arenas that are side-by-side for some reason, so if you get to Bowser with a P-Wing then you can fly over the wall that divides them, as long as you don't trigger the fight. That doesn't help, it's just a silly thing you can do.

I was so happy when I beat this game as a kid. When you're a kid a lot of these games are so hard you feel like you'll NEVER beat them and that last moment when I saw Bowser fall into the pit it just filled my heart with joy that I had figured it out. Mario 3 is like the perfect difficulty because it challenges you but if you keep it at it you can still finish it no problem.

I remember it so well. I was about to beat Bowser when I was 6. It was down to the last few jumps. Then my dad came into the room. I begged for 5 more minutes as I played. He then calmly walked behind the tv and unplugged the NES. I scream cried. To this day I have never actually sat down and beat the game. That is as close as I got.

pro tip: when you get to bowser using the P-Wing method, the whole in the floor is wider than when you go through the whole game, so, makes it even easier (you have more wiggle room) to have bowser dig himself into oblivion

if you go the bottom route the bowser fight has a slightly bigger hole for bowser to fall into making it slightly easier, though that route is harder to get to bowser so its like do you want the challenge to be the boss or the platforming

Dang! Mike was going in-and-out with the tip here. First he brought the tip in, then he would take it out and talk about things not entirely related to the tip, but were generally around the whole of the conversation. Then he would bring the tip back into the video. He did this several times throughout. P.S. The first time my aunt made it to Bowser she was like, "What the fuck do I have to do here?" then she saw him jumping around breaking bricks, and she goes, "Ah shit! I gotta have him break all of the bricks until he falls through the bottom?" She then proceeded to beat the game, and then went to go smoke a joint & have a beer after. She loved the Mario NES games. She played them like crazy when she had an NES. *Edit* I just noticed in the P-Wing portion of the clip the bottom where Bowser has to drop out is noticeably larger, leading me to believe it is a secret area/second Bowser. The initial area the bottom is like what, 4 blocks wide. This new area is like 8 blocks wide.
