David's approach to painting is very much concerned with capturing atmosphere and a sense of time and place. He works as much as possible outdoors, starting with an initial sketch using pencil and coloured crayons. His watercolours are then painted without pencil drawing, resulting in fresh and lively paintings. In this film we follow him as he paints on the Somerset Levels and then along the south Devon coast at Brixham and Salcombe.

Love your last line. "What you've got to do is go out there, paint the best you can and at some stage you've got to walk away from it." That is so true! Knowing when to walk away is half the battle. I love plien air painting. You ahve a lovely area to paint in. Thank you for these video's. I will be sharing this video on our group facebook page, The Windsor & Essex County Plein Air Society.

I like how the artist works out even the smallest detail with a large brush. Thumps up!

Both of these brushes will come to a good point but the idea is that the squirrel hair works well with large areas and washes because it lets its load of paint go easily and the sable works well where you need more control because sable has this unique ability to hold up the flow in a controlled manner. I use smaller versions of each but not too small - using big brushes will allow a more expansive approach leading to looser work rather than too much fiddling about with smaller ones.

I use a number of brushes. The big ones seen in the video are a Size 20 Red Sable (Series 99) from Rosemary Brushes and the squirrel mop is from Isabey - their largest size. The Isabey brushes are available generally from better art shops or on line with Jacksons and Great Art as well as others and other manufacturers also sell them, usually as ‘Petit Gris’ brushes.

That is correct. Unfortunately, watercolor is very misunderstood in the States. People tend to look at it as either an "Amateur" medium, or as something grandma used to do in the nursing home. Sad, as the biggest classical masters of the medium were in fact Americans. Check out Alvaro Castagnet (Uruguay) and Joseph Zbukvic (Australia). But yes, Britain has a long and beautiful watercolor tradition.

I love these videos. If only these DVDs were more affordable I would but them all! But with the price of multi million dollar titles on blu ray disks being $20 USD a pop, I can't even begin to fathom why they would price these standard DVDs at $40 dollars each. You buy two of them, plus tax and shipping and your over $100 bucks in! Please put these at normal prices so I can get at least five of them! Pleaseeeeee!

great ! do you use only one kind of brush ? the big one in the video ? there is a specific reason (technical) or it is only a personal preference ? anyhow, it's beautiful watch you painting. Bravo.

I'm sorry you find our DVDs too expensive, though we do offer a 10% discount when you buy more than one. We take a great deal of care and time to produce our films and to be able to continue to work in this way, producing high quality films for a minority market we cannot sell them at a mass market price.

I love your style. Do you think that a #4 squirrel mop is big enough to do washes and cover large areas? I'm thinking about using a #4 squirrel mop, a #8 kolinsky sable, a 1 inch flat, and a #2 and #4 rigger. I'm trying to keep my brush count down to a minimum.

Is water color painting more popular in Europe than in the US? I've noticed that all the best water-colorist are from Europe. At the very least, all the cool DVDs are made in Europe.
