Jinkies! A whole review of Velma! That's spooky, man! Is it as bad as I stated a year ago? Let's find out, Gang!
The last episode of HBO's Velma episode 10 came out February 9, 2023.
Now that it has been out for exactly one year, I think it will be fun to look back on it to see if Mindy Kaling's Velma really was the worst show ever made.
I would like to thank Rags for voicing the into skit:

I think the phenomenon of these inconsistent scenes is more that the writers didn't check what their teammates wrote instead of themselves forgetting what they just wrote. It's still bad and lazy, so feel free to mock it, but your conglomerating of the writers makes them out to be a bit more incompetent than they probably are, I mean they had to prove that they know how to write something to be hired... right?

The funniest, and unintentional, part of the hypnosis plot mechanic is that hypnosis isn't simply mind control; it plays off suggestions and the person's willingness to go along with it. That's why you can't hypnotize people to do anything they wouldn't be somewhat down for. That being said, this (unbeknownst to the writers) means that Velma's mom has some willingness to perform the experiments at the cost of children's lives, AND that part of Velma didn't want her to find her mom. On the plus side, if the nightmares Velma's mind makes to distract her conscious efforts cause a heart attack every time, she has extremely terminal heart disease.

@@Redhead-pf8leIt's even less mystical and "special" than that. All the big hypnotism acts are done in front of a big audience. When you get called up, the stage for the guy everyone cheering for to "mesmerize you" or whatever, you have two options: you either play along and let everyone have fun, or you go "Nope" and ruin the illusion to everyone. We are social animals, and there have been brain studies that show that the uncomfortable sensation of going against peer pressure triggers the same part of the brain as the one responsible for the pain responses, so unless you are really obstinate, socially awkward, or downright have a spectrum disorder, you'll probably play along. Honestly, hypnotist shows often remind me of an experience I had in high school. When I started, hazing the new students was still used as a practice to justify petty bullying, so the staff decided to do try something new: not long after the beginning of the school year, we all went to the local community center, and the higher grades put together a bunch of silly and humiliating "challenges" for the new students, in the name of hazing, except you had to do it on stage, in public. A lot of them were fairly simple stuff, like inflating a car tractor inline tube by mouth, or do jumping jacks on stage, while others were pretty wild, like asking two guys to play out being newlyweds in front of everyone. Yet, because of peer pressure, everyone went along with it, and when I later watched one of these big Vegas hypnotist shows on the TV, I just couldn't help but notice the similarities.

Daphne doesn't even have to really have a mask for that to work. If she simply liked people in general and didn't have any strong beliefs getting in the way of enjoying spending time with a lot of different people (by this I mean things like "doesn't have a specific Star Trek series she cannot stand to have playing in the same room" or "is willing to order a vegan meal every so often to avoid bothering whomever she's eating with"), then a teenage extreme loner could easily see her as a bitch who doesn't even have the decency to openly state she's a bitch and everything has to be her way to gain her company.

I think the worst part about this show is that one of the few adult animated series in recent years with an actual animation budget gets released and every other aspect of it is so half baked and sloppy, especially considering how much HBO Max content has been cancelled or torn off the service. I can see the makings of a good show buried in here, but its buried under so many flaws. But it was surprisingly successful, so hopefully it can pave the way for better adult animation getting the greenlight.

I hate it too. It had the budget and talent for the animation, but holy shit did the writing team need to be replaced. Just goes to show, you can have the best visuals, but if your story has shit writing you are up the river without a paddle. Same for games. Lots of beautiful games that are high resolution photorealistic graphics, but are unplayable because nothing else makes any sense. And yet, there are lots of games with simple graphics that put time and work into gameplay and story, and they are amazing.

38:12 Actually, that thing is literally taught in Self Defense Classes for years and years, thousands of times: it’s just that it’s instead worded as: „In case someone wants to kill you, and you have no other option, drop on the ground, go limp and play dead UNTIL the murderer leaves. That’s HOW wild animals protect themselves aganist Predators”.
@badboyluvr
@badboyluvr 7 ай бұрын
I took self defense class in high school & I do NOT remember being taught that. I remember being taught to have/use anything on hand that could be used as a weapon in a pinch (ex. keys, shoes, ect.) I also remember being told to get away as fast as possible by any means & try to find someone else for aid. NOT to lay down & play dead, because your attacker might not be looking to kill you. Also, not very many animals play dead as self defense, many will try to run or fight off a predator first.

How the f did they make this about empowering women and that they are better than men and in the last ep the only competent characters are the two main male characters they’ve done nothing but sh*t on the entire show? Like I’m genuinely so baffled by this what were the writers smoking? And who was this show for?

Velma is a vanity project on par with Mike Myers The Love Guru. This whole show is just Mindy opening her mind, and pouring it unfiltered into a Scooby Doo container bought off Wish. The "Lock her up" bit. I think that's a reference to when Hillary Clinton got herself in some trouble and people were chanting "Lock her up"

God this show was utterly nonsensical. If you didn’t hate it for how annoying, obnoxious and ridiculous the characters were or for how it blatantly doesn’t even TRY often to make you laugh (with a couple of exceptions), it’s a show that makes so little sense it drains your brain cells the more you watch. We know exactly who this show was made for. It was made for Mindy Kaling. I honestly blame the original Live-action Scooby-doo film for this. That was when their characters all jumped the shark. The only good thing it did well was Matthew Lillard was a good voice for Shaggy over the years.
