A couple more: if you are playing alone or with a friend it is fine to throw a couple practice discs per shot, but if there are people waiting behind you to start the hole, keep it moving (or let them play through). There is nothing worse that waiting at the tee while someone misses a putt and proceeds to empty their bag trying to make the putt they just missed. Also, if people are waiting for you to finish a hole, and the basket is out of sight of the tee, yell at the group behind you, “Clear!” when you finish the hole.

The first time before I had ever thrown a disc, I met a terrific and patient player who was giving me a lot of those etiquette tips you have mentioned here. I find that it can not hurt to ask a solo player if you want to play a round with them. If they say, No. You have to respect it. That person might be waiting on a group of friends or they just want to have some personal time for themselves. Can't fault people for that.

Maybe. But newer players need to understand what "being a dick" means. When I started, I had no idea that I was supposed to take my disc out of the basket after I made a putt before the next player threw. Someone nicely explained it to me and I was able to be less of a dick :)

1.Understand the essential rules of the game. 2. Make sure you're obeying the specific park rules(they differ). 3.Take care of the course! Don't litter and even tidy up garbage. 4. Return any discs you find to owner..name and # is often on disc or put it in Dropbox on course, or find the discgolf course FB page, or drop of at nearby store (they have lost & founds). 5.LET faster groups play through! If ppl r constantly waiting for u, let them go ahead. If course is backed up/ groups on every hole thats different, but if there's no one ahead of u for several holes and ppl waiting, let them go first! 6. Avoid skipping ahead of other groups. Ok to skip ahead so I can start your round w/o being slowed down But make sure there's no one behind u when u skip to a hole..and if there is a group that started before u and they catch up to u..let them thru. They started first so they deserve to continue at the pace they're at. 7. Keep your disc golf groups small(4ppl is ideal) so other groups aren't waiting. 8. Music-keep it at a reasonable level, so your not effecting others' games. 9.Make sure hole is clear before u throw, if u hit someone it's very painful. 10. Avoid distracting other players, especially during putting-be out of thier line of site-be quiet-dont stand directly behind them. 11. Avoid walking ahead of another players shot before they've thrown. 12.Be ready for your shot and ready to go, to keep the flow of the game. 13. Be helpful, respect specific requests. 14.Take your disc out of the basket before next person's shot. 15. Respect the image of disc golf/other players-avoid excessive swearing, abusing substances, littering etc.

Have been playin since i was a teen, some 14 years or so now. Played a new course recently. Ive never been big into the gear scene, i only carry about half a dozen discs in a simple satchel. The course i was playing had 18 baskets and 32 tees, with two courses crossing over each other using alternate tees to add some variety. I threw a weird line and ended up splitting from one intended course progression to the other. Asked some folks with branded everything where the next tee was and got some chuckles and light hazing. Joined them on their way to that tee and shut them up by throwing sidearm into a dog-leg left and parked right under the basket while they struggled with a hole that should have followed their natural line.

Having dogs off-leash during rounds is bad etiquette at best and usually against the law. I love dogs and love taking them to designated areas to socialize and exercise, but when talking about being respectful to the course, to the card mates, and not being distracting, this widespread practice of having off-leash dogs during rounds is doing more harm than good to the game IMO. Great video though!

Yes! Dogs on leash should for sure be an etiquette rule. Puppers have blocked my putt before right when I released and walked up to the tee pad mid drive :( It’s honestly super distracting and a lot of work to have a dog on the card than to not have one anyway.

@@mandarynornj4020 totally agree with you. At the course nearby at a local park, it is required for dogs to be on leash, but you rarely owners following that rule. I love dogs just as much as the next person, but many are not trained well enough by their owners to apply proper etiquette while playing.

Thank you! Agreed that it’s definitely an issue and should have been added to this video. For some people like ourselves, our dog is well trained and simply follows us along when we play without distracting other groups. And if it’s busy, we don’t bring her or we put her on her leash. Unfortunately, there are so many bad dog owners with poorly trained dogs that have ruined it for everyone. It really is all about common sense and being spatially aware, but agreed that it’s against the rules and is a widespread problem!

lol, I got the stink eye once when I had to join a random group and was walking behind a player to my disc, which I do all the time in ball golf, in order to be ready for my shot when it was my turn. Hahahah good question. Honestly, the main issue is just being in their way/line of sight when they are putting. Even just waiting off to the side is good enough (even if they can still see you). Just don't be standing right in front of their line. As for standing behind them, most people don't have a problem with this. I think it just bothers some because it makes them feel uncomfortable, like as if someone is looking over their shoulder. It's weight I know, but can get in people's heads, especially for putting.

So many times have some older players just assumes am a lost child or something and just stepped ahead , like al be reading the info for the next throw and someone just pushes me to the side and starts playing. I have a question on pace: for longer holes, should I wait to tee off until the other group is done with the hole? Or just until they're well out of range of my drive? Or somewhere in the middle? I'm not throwing more than 200' tops yet, so on a 450' hole I feel a little pressure to not just sit and wait for the people ahead to finish putting before I even tee off, but it also feels rude to follow too closely behind another group, even if there's zero danger of me hitting them with a throw.

On a 9 hole course the other day by myself, used by groups going in different directions (1-9 clockwise, 10-18 counter-clockwise from different tees). Threw my 1st shot when a group of 6 or 7 was finishing their previous hole (coming the other way). I was 3/4 of the way to my disc in plain sight when I surprisingly saw them start throwing at the basket I was finishing. Was that proper etiquette on their part or was I in the wrong to want to finish the basket I was almost done with?

You are not in the wrong, if you threw first before the began the hole, they should have waited until you finished. At the same time, alternate direction courses sound like a nightmare! Some people are just clueless when it comes to proper etiquette (and the reason we made this video). Sometimes common sense isn’t common sense for some 👎 I remember one time we had this group ahead of us that decided to take a break after playing the hole we were about to throw on. They watched us play the whole entirely, and we assumed they were planning to let us throw. Just as we finished the hole and were about to jump ahead of them, they decided that their break was over and began to tee-off, right in front of us. No comment, no “did you want to play through?”, just stupidity at its finest! 👌🤪

Rule #2 is a big issue where I play locally. It seems a lot of disc golfers don't seem to care about the city park's rules in place. Not all courses are located in a city park, but when a course is in a city owned park, the rules are more strict, and a lot of golfers just don't seem to care. It's the reason why my home course was almost shut down by the city years ago. This particular course was is a city park, and the park has a no smoking & drinking policy, but that doesn't stop a lot of the golfers from smoking weed and drinking as soon as they hit the holes in the woods. Look, I don't care if someone smokes week or drinks, but just follow the rules of the park. It's that simple.

Came here to try to figure out how to return discs with no numbers. I'm a new player and I've only found one disc with contact info (which was promptly returned), but I've found five more discs now with no contact info. The courses don't have drop boxes or any nearby stores. How are you supposed to go about returning unmarked discs?

Having played ball golf for 30 years, most of this was second nature to me. I am closing in on one year playing DG. Here are some good/bad/tips: 1.) Getting to a course very early, I usually never run into people and play unimpeded rounds. 2.) I have experienced good and bad with returned discs. I know some lost discs have never been returned to me. One time, I found a girl on the course collecting discs in a big paper bag. There are people who wipe out the names and return them to stores for cash. I call them dirtbags or scumbags, whichever you prefer. 3.) Not a fan of garbage cans on a course. They usually overfill and bring inevitable garbage to the course. If you can bring it in, you can bring it out. 4.) Be self-aware. If you are the only one to birdie a hole, it's your teebox. Next tee grab your disc and get on the tee, ready to throw. Don't make others wait when it's your teebox, otherwise I will jump in and throw if you are too slow to realize. 5.) Have fun, remember a shitty round at disc golf is better than going into a soul sucking job.

We have a small park in our neighborhood with disc golf but it also has a lot of other amenities including picnic tables and a playground. The baskets are located close by and i have seen many close calls with adults and children almost being hit with discs. Unfortunately, some disc golfers throw their discs even when they risk injuring others. They don't even apologize for almost hitting people.

Only recently beginning to play and having golfed for 50 years, I enjoy the mush more casual approach disc golf and players. I do long for a little more structure sometimes. My pet peeves, talking and music during throws and an endless line of singles wanting to play through. Singles should be joining up to form groups of 3 or 4.

Another rule that I like is if you get stuck at a tee and the group in front of you is looking for a shanked drive nearish the teebox, give them a hand in their search. Additionally, If you see a disk, check with any groups around you that may have thrown it before picking it up. Also, for the love of god, please mark your discs!

Mostly great rules, but I'm 50-50 on #11. If you're playing a really wooded course or need to find your disc before it gets lost, then run up there and find the spot. It's better than making the entire card waste 10 minutes looking for a shot that got off course. It's not just always disrespect, which is why I would put heavy emphasis on "avoid." Yeah, you try not to, but sometimes you gotta find that disc while you have the flight path in your mind.

Wait for people to finish a hole before throwing, unless they are at least 2x past your max distance or finished with the hole. You may think "I probably can't throw it that far." but you may have a tailwind or something that causes your disc to get too close to other people. If you didn't see they were there it's understandable, but be aware.

I would never argue with ya but just have one angle regarding returning a disc. I might just find more discs than anyone else in the world. I have a gift for it. When playing in a group I always am able to find it by simply "marking" in my head when last saw it... "hard hyzer 20 feet high and 4 feet just past pine tree". Secondly, I am not very good at disc. I throw three or four errant shots a round - as in stupid-bad. So I am in the woods and deep, thus, find other discs. I just send a text and let person where it was placed. There is always a nice safe place near like "under garbage can at tee-9". If no number I am going to steal your idea about going to web-site and post facsimile. Never thought of that - TY!.

I really liked that you included the making noise with your bag when someone is putting. Sometimes it can be hard getting discs out of your bag, so it's better to wait until there is a transition between shots. I've had it throw me off before on a putt where someone did that.

It’s funny that you have dogs in the video and failed to mention a rule or two about that. So let me help, if your dog doesn’t have perfect recall make sure they are on a leash at all times. 2nd clean up all messes your dog makes. 3rd your dog or dogs shouldn’t slow play. 4th if your dog or dogs are awesome, please bring them.

I thought the same thing. When I saw the dog running into frame I actually thought you were about to mention that. A big part of good etiquette, as you say, is to minimize distractions for other players. Dogs running loose can be a distraction. "Don't worry, he's friendly" doesn't make it ok. Great video, I just think you missed an opportunity there.

If there isn't a name and number on the disc then I say it's a free for all. Sometimes the number on the disc doesnt work, sometimes they never answer. Sometimes it's someone who doesnt live in the area and they let you keep it. But if I get hold of the right person and they wanna make the time to meet then we will otherwise it will be mine. I've never seen a drop off location at my disc golf courses near me.

First time I went to play a week ago, and in between from my second shot on the second hole of the course and it's basket, a couple was just standing there talking for a good TWENTY MINUTES! They just stood there chatting away and one of the. Just kept throwing discs into the next holes basket from there as well. I was so annoyed but I didn't want to leave after just getting to do only 1 hole, so I just marked where I was at and then backtracked a little bit a d practiced mid range/putting shots on hole 1 until they finally just left. Thankfully noone else was playing behind me that evening.

I think a good rule for letting people play through is that if you waited for the previous group, then you shouldn't let the next group play through. It wasn't you holding them up, it was the group in front holding you up. If I didn't have to wait before teeing off, then I might throw my drive, but I'll wait by the tee regardless if I've thrown or not. Also, skipping ahead is never appropriate imo. If you start on hole 6, then you're gonna end on hole 5. Another group might be waiting on hole 6 to let you play through.

How about calling "FORE!" whenever your disc has even the *slightest* chance of heading toward others down course. I've seen a couple people hit and many more almost hit this year and most were more upset about having zero warning than actually getting hit. Don't be afraid to call four for your playing partner who doesn't think it'll reach.

imo if you find a disc your responsibility ends at calling the number and leaving it somewhere for the owner. It shouldn't be your responsibility to drive anywhere or hunt down a social media page to find the owner, though those are very kind things to do, they're going above and beyond what's required.

Watching the video made me want to get a drop box on the course for just that reason. I don't really like storing people's dx leopards and sharks for them to never return a call. I have also lost discs that would have been returned other than it was just too big a pain to arrange a meeting time, so I told the person to keep the disc.

Players that don't stay behind the thrower is my greatest pet peeve. Often times they are looking for their disc, preplanning their shot, or just trying to rush along play. Best to stay behind and not endanger yourself or others. One time I had a player on my card that thought it was enough to hide behind some trees for cover. My shot hit three trees, ricocheted and hit him in the back. Again, better to be safe then sorry.

I always call if I find it playing a round but I have a lake rake that I spend 50 bucks on materials plus a couple hours building the thing, not to mention the hours I spend getting muddy wet stinky with blisters on my hands to rescue some discs from the shadowy depths. Any I find raking are mine. End of story.

While not a disc golf rule and normally a park rule: keep dogs on leashes unless the park is marked as a leash free place. Just because your off leash dog is okay with other people/dogs coming up to them doesn't mean my dog is. Sorry for the rant but my dog was just attacked by an off leash dog. (He's fine but it's not helping the reactive training.)

I cut down thorny vines sometimes, but that's not really part of the course design. I've also walked through with a sprayer (buddy carried our discs) to take out the poison ivy near the rough, just because it didn't seem worth it to make people suffer. These courses sometimes need love, not hate for the trees.

the etiquette at my local courses have been terrible. I get stuck behind every group sometimes groups of 7! I started to not hesitate to ask and make my self heard "can I play though". 2021 has been way busier than last year. The years prior I almost never saw any one playing like this. I'm keeping lost disks now, Don't lose them.. its really not that hard to look for them and pay attention to where they landed.
