Karen, I'm so glad you stayed the course. He is fabulous! Thanks for sharing your process. I lone raw edge projects. I relate to how you felt with this project. I started and finished all the paper pieced sections of an elephant. When they were finished, I realized I didn't like the contrast of two of the fabrics. Somehow, I didn't see it when working on the sections. So it has put me off the project. It's become the elephant in the room. Watching you tackle the squirrel, I'm now inspired to finish. Wish me luck.

Relations on getting hazelnut finished. In our guild, some of the ladies do this type of Quilting and the first cover the piece with a very fine netting so that they’re long arm order home machine doesn’t get stuck on the pieces and pull them up as they are Quilting. It does soften the look a teeny tiny bit, but it’s lovely. Like you, they do straight line, Quilting, and these collage quilts are beautiful. Yes, by all means, frame it and find a big wall to showcase all that work.❤

Congratulations on getting it done! I haven’t yet done a Laura Heine pattern but I have a couple to do. My first attempt at collage quilting was the Cardinal by Emily Taylor using my own fabrics. I found the collage technique challenging at first and now I just love it. At the time I had watched your video Karen on color theory and gray scales and that helped a bunch. Thanks for sharing your journey in this SQUIRREL 🐿️. I just wanted to say that in my experience using Steam a Seam that it really needs to be fused using steam vs dry heat. If it’s not steamed well it’s likely that your quilting needle will get gummy and sticky. Just FYI.

That is a very impressive project. It's a beautiful quilt. I can see why at the Quilt Show you were drawn to it. Mostly, thank you for showing that you struggle too. I don't feel so bad when I struggle with a technique, knowing that the pros that I learn from, have struggled too. I find that sometimes the fusible comes undone even though it's not supposed too so a thorough long-arm technique will be important. Hang it in a place of honor and enjoy it.

Wowzzzzer❤ its beautiful. Inspired to find my queen size Irish Chain that I started about 15 years ago.... not nearly as intricate as yours but it was my first dabble/toe dip into quilting. At the time a friend who was a blue ribbon winning quilter said she was going to pray I didn't grow so frustrated that I quit. I didn't quit just grew frustrated for lack of time... I've finished numerous comfort and birthday lap quilts. Just couldn't face the size. I've learned start small and conquer then advance.... I'm ready to conquer the big one! THANKS Karen.

Oh man, that's quite a project! Once you hit your stride, it all starts to go somewhere, but it's tough sometimes to get to that place. I have a quilt that I finished the top in 1996, started to hand quilt it, and found I cut the backing too small....at the time I had no idea long arming was even a thing. So, after a 25 yr hiatus, I now grind out at least a quilt a month, and that poor first quilt STILL isn't done. But you know? I'm going to pull it out, rip out all that stitching, and finally finish it. Thank you for inspiring me to "git 'er done"!!

Whew! What a relief this must be for you -- congrats! I've had a Laura Heine pattern for YEARS. Here's how far I got: I opened the pattern, then carefully folded it and put it back in the package. Haha! I think if I accomplished completing Hazel Nutt, I'd quilt with a vertical woodgrain pattern, which is *close to your idea of straight-line. And, I like your idea of a wood frame, and I think I'd try to find one that had a distinct woodgrain to mimic the quilting OR perhaps one with a floral design to bring out your brilliant placements of the flowers throughout the quilt. Also, I am SURE I'd NEVER erase the crossed-out "Hazel Nut" on the dry erase board! 😅

I created my Abilene collage quilt using one single line of fabric - Whisper Weave. For me it was more about the color than the fabric pattern. I quilted her with grid quilting about a fat quarter inch. Painters tape on the foundation ease paper on the wall also worked very well for me, as it enabled me to stand back and evaluate the placement of fabrics. Great job with Hazelnut!

This adventure reminds me of the Melinda Bula Iris quilt kit I purchased a few years ago to learn thread painting. The cutting out process was similar to your squirrel one except EVERYTHING was on a pattern: no improvising. And there was NO GUIDANCE on how to thread paint! Luckily for me, she had uploaded videos of several other flower designs during CoVid, so I spent hours watching them to glean what I could. And mine turned out great, too! I learned I will never choose another pattern like that, but the thread painting technique I will use in other ways. Goal reached.

Stunning! I’ve been watching several videos on collage quilting and wondering if it is something I want to tackle, but would begin with something much smaller. I do understand having that one stretching project for a mental, emotional, creative challenge. I made a small labyrinth quilt while getting radiation treatments. Pushing myself to work on it a bit every day was one of the most difficult activities I’ve ever undertaken. It is my cancer quilt and every time I look at it hanging on the wall I rejoice at its completion and my journey while making it. Thank you for sharing Hazel Nut with us.
