One of those backups apparently meant putting large explosives on the moon. We dont know why they were put there originally just that they were used in this scenario.

Honestly DC HAS so much potential to make an amazing cenimatic universal but the wrong people have been in charge of these a characters. This JLA run is what happens when writers write themselves into a corner,while leaving a bunch of plot holes and loose ends and then attempt to wriggle out of that corner,tie together all those loose ends together while trying to fill the plot holes.
