Funny story: the Genesis version of the game IS different. In fact, these two games are why Diablo happened. This one was made by Blizzard, and the Genesis one was made by Condor. Neither knew that the other one was working on the same game contract until their demo booths were put next to each other at a trade show (E3? I don't remember for sure). They got to talking, and then Condor became a part of Blizzard, the part that made Diablo.

That would be dope. If all the rumors are true though it looks like we ain’t getting injustice 3. Netherrealm seems to be something else for their next game
