With Doyle being a Sheriff, this theoretically could've ended way worse for Boyd and his crew. Instead, they tried to get gangster and they underestimated how crafty Boyd really was. I think he knew with the call, what they tried to pull off failed miserably. Sorta. Mags correctly surmised that any deal made would only be a holdover until Boyd wanted more, which he inevitably would.
