Olazabal holing that putt on 18 to halve the match is one of the more underrated makes of all time given everything that was going on.

Crenshaw, a great historian of the game, is a legend for calling this comeback with such confidence. After the highly favored American team had played so badly for 3 days, this was exactly what they needed to go out there and execute the largest comeback of all time to do it. And for it to be Leonard, who had been so bad in this Ryder Cup (and shut out in the previous Ryder Cup) that Johnny Miller was calling for him to be benched, to come back from 4 down to beat a Ryder Cup stalwart in Olazabal, and do it with a 50 foot putt on the same green as Francis Ouimet put away the British pros, was perfect. This is one of the greatest moments in golf and American sport.

Olazabal is such a classy guy, I've been a big fan for a long time. He's up there with, Ernie Els, Crenshaw, Trevino. All guy's that have strong knowledge, opinions, and values.

This edition has changed the Ryder Cup. It is just a circus nowadays , far from the spirit of the game. What a performance from Leonard, a great fighter! This would have been historical if it would have happened in a civilized environement but they decided to make it a shame .

I was always bothered by the “Americans should have composed themselves” comment. Garcia and Parnevik were running around the greens with every made putt during the partner format the previous two days.

Yes, but not embarking on a three-minute long green invasion with their teammates & wives when the other guy still had a putt to halve. Come on, it’s not exactly the same thing. And Garcia was a 19 year old kid, his exuberance was natural. Lehman’s snarling & frantic fist-pumping was contrived and ugly.

@@andrewrobinson8305 when the Europeans did it, it didn’t mean anything. When the Americans did it, it meant they won the Ryder Cup. It’s obvious they aren’t the same thing. I don’t care how old Sergio was, complaining about something your opponent did once that you already did multiple times is trash.

You’re still missing the point. Leonard’s putt didn’t win it for the US, because Olazabal still had to a putt to stay all square with one hole to play. If he’d holed and then win the 18th, Europe would have retained the cup. That’s why the green invasion by the US players, wife’s, caddies etc was wrong. I can’t believe you still haven’t grasped this basic difference.

@@MrAJR76 fully understand everything you stated, never once have I said otherwise. It still doesn’t excuse the behavior of the Europeans before that. Your butt hurt take on Leonard’s putt probably wouldn’t have happened if not for the way the Europeans behave the entire weekend. I can’t believe you still don’t understand that.

That is a "losing your mind" kind of moment, and I doubt that anybody had any thought in their mind about running over Olazabal's line. It's possible that the Europeans would have done the same thing in the same situation. It was a loss of decorum but not an intentionally unsportsmanlike act. And on top of that there is no proof that anybody actually created any marks that altered the subsequent putt. It was just an unfortunate situation.
