oh wow! Such a great episode. When I was in my early 20s, I was having stomach issues and went to a doctor. She told me I needed to lose 15 pounds (I was not overweight) and suggested the South Beach Diet or Adkins. I knew enough about those diets to know they are BS, but her comments and lack of concern for my true health sent me into a spiral of orthorexia, too. I became obsessive and restrictive. I wish doctors were given more education in nutrition!

I had a very similar experience with a health provider. At 19 I stopped having my period because of restrictive eating and over exercising. He pinched the back of my arm and said I was fine because I had more body fat than he did. Of course feeding into my insecurities even more took me a very long time to recover from my disordered eating. It’s too bad some “professionals” are that way

I have recently admitted to myself that I have battled various eating disorders. I’m going to be 30 this year and I love seeing people talk about toxic diet and exercise culture. It really triggers me seeing people post online all their “healthy” routines. Thank you guys for the honest conversation!

Love the lightning in this one. Thank you for explaining this medical issue and how it can affect even a simingly healthy looking person. I agree that proper deep breathing is super important.

I adore how Charlotte brought up the eight limbs of yoga by Patanjali and her focus on pranayama with her students! So many Western yoga teachers only focus on the asana practice and it's refreshing to see a more holistic practitioner who knows about the yogic philosophies 💚

OMG! Yes, about sucking in our stomachs! I did that for so many years of my life. It actually likely contributed to my overactive pelvic floor muscles. I played the trumpet growing up, and I had a teacher who was teaching me how to breathe into my belly properly. He said something along the lines of "don't worry about being ladylike, it's ok if your stomach sticks out." It clicked for me then to breathe properly you can't be sucking in your stomach.

Charlotte is a great guest, I really enjoy these conversations. I can relate to the acceptance that healthy living will only get you so far. I have a genetic kidney disease. It’s still important to keep my heart healthy and bp down to prevent more damage to my kidneys. However, it’s progressive. I can relate to the crappy comments, except mine were from women-nurse practitioners. They don’t realize that these comments can trigger anxiety. I’ve learned to blow it off. But what really gets me is that I’m older at age 63, but yet in much better shape than them. Sheesh.

I love this series Justina!! But I have a request...could we have an episode with like a male power lifter...I'm so curious to see you interview someone who trains like completely different than you and how your different philosophies on exercise meet

@JustinaErcole I also meant to say hubby and I went out to eat on Sunday and hubby asked for bread and the guy that brought the bread said they don't bring bread to the table that people have to ask for it because they try to keep the calories down. I told hubby that triggered me as a person that is overweight with body image issues. I wish they wouldn't even put calorie counts on menus. As for the person that said the guest was boring I love your response. If somebody is boring just keep scrolling.

Such a wholesome video! I've also gone through my fair share of insanity + eating clean, and gosh, it wasn't sustainable. TYSM for promoting long-term health ❤ And yes to deep breathing. Not just for exercises but for everyday life. Even my driving instructor swears by that haha Lots of good stuff in this video! 🎉🎉

Just watched 1:29 minutes and I'm like "whaaat??" All women in my family have high cholesterol and high transaminases (a liver hormone). I never made the connection! Maybe that's what we have! 😮 Luckily is the "good" cholesterol, but still, I never thought it would be related to my weird liver stuff... It's tricky because now my mum is on medication forever but no one has ever been able to tell her why or what condition we have... Thank you very much for the info! I'm gonna keep watching the video!

Great chat!! I come from a messed up past with disordered eating and my own mother is who led the example for me. So sad. I am kind of traumatized by it and don't want my children to ever suffer in that way. I am trying to find a way to teach them about nutrition but my trauma makes me think they will suffer the way I did. I don't label food as good or bad, healthy vs unhealthy. Food is food - I focus on the energy it provides, but my kids still want the lesser nutrition foods and don't want to try new foods even fruit. Any advice from you or other viewers on how to navigate this? Thank you!!

I'm not a mom, so it's hard for me to weigh in. But it sounds like you're doing a great job reducing any moral value with food and really educating them on how important food is for them. Great job!

I relate to her so much. My mother passed away at 17 to breast cancer and I've just started working with a registered dietitian in order to fix my relationship with food and to make my diet actually healthier.
