I hope older people at the gym realize they are role models for anyone younger. I rock climb and when I see people in their 60s and 70s at the gym, my only thought is "damn that's the dream. I hope I'm still doing this when I get to their age."

Totally agree. Also whenever I see older people, disabled people, larger people in classes I feel better because I know the place is welcoming for everyone. I don't want to work out in a judgemental space, so if the clientele is solely young, slim, physically abled people it does make me wonder if there's a reason for that beyond 'that's just who happens to go here'.

I’m 55 and started training again for the first time since my early 20’s 3 years ago, it quickly shifted from just aesthetics to becoming fascinated by what I can do with my body, my bone density and lean muscle mass. I’m training for my 70+ body

I met two older men, both with crazy mops of shocking white hair - they weren’t even particularly lean but by God they were fit. They scrambled up 60 feet to the top and rode down a million mph. Apparently they’ve been climbing for 40 years and I was like damn. I could not be more impressed.

I liked that video as well, but yeah steps arent cardio, lol. Its just basic movement. Cardio is very specific, in that it is exercise that raises your heart rate and breathing....if walking can get your body in that state then sure...but you have to be really out of shape for walking to get you winded.

Second video hit so hard, I got into fitness back in July from the wellness world and listening to an influencer say “cortisol bad, don’t do HIIT, do Pilates and it’ll regulate your nervous system.” Justina, you’ve helped a lot when it comes to calling this type of content out on its BS and providing facts for me to base a fitness routine upon. Thanks so much for that! I’m so glad I got started and found my way and now am open to trying all different types of workouts and it’s not about reducing bloat or losing weight. If anything, I’ve noticed the scale going up a tiny bit but I think it’s from muscle forming since I can visually see it. Knowing it’s not about the scale, it’s about feeling good and prioritizing my health feels much better. Seeing progress through increasing weights I lift is so much more satisfying and rewarding.

I read about the legendary Steve Reeves (a championship body builder who was also a b-movie actor from the 50's & 60"s), He lifted three times a week and did full body workouts for those sessions. On rest days he went for walks or swam. His body was amazing, but he did not do extremes or do crazy supplements. He ate a good diet with protein. His plan was basic. Consistent. Look him up. He was gorgeous too.

2 personal things: I'm tens of pounds heavier than I was at my lowest, during chemo, and I feel much better about how my body looks now than I did when I was "skinny". I would worry about that tiny roll of belly fat that wouldn't go away, how my legs were not gapping, how I freaked out when I gained 5-10 pounds (which I now see as a sign my body was recovering). Now, I often look at myself in the mirror and think damn this body can take me on runs, allows me to do crossfit, go on long walks with my dog and run with him. I may not love my body and I still find "flaws"/ things I don't like but I just don't obsess about it like I did at my skinniest point. It's freeing to think you're gonna move your body because it feels good and you're gonna be healthy for a longer period, and not because you have to earn your food (PSA: you do not) or lose weight. Do I still struggle some days? Yes, I am not gonna sit here and pretend I don't; but it is way less frequent than it used to be. You don't have to be body positive, you can be neutral about your body and still find things you don't like and accept them like you accept that you have 2 legs and 2 arms (or that you have a cool ass prosthetic if you don't have 4 limbs, or a little stump that leads to great puns)

20:00 Comparing oneself to oneself is great if it’s motivating. I just want to say that when I talk to clients who say, “I want to get back to where I was….” I always say, “okay but remember, you have put years on this body since then. Let’s honor where it is now and make it the best it can be from this moment.” They have survived a [pandemic, pregnancy, illness, stressful job, 3 winters, whatever] on that body. It will never be the same as it once was. I feel that allows more grace. But that’s just my opinion. I see old photos of me - pre-knee surgeries, pre-miscarriage, pre-pandemic, pre-endometriosis diagnosis,… that woman is 8 years younger. It will never be me again. And that is okay. I’m 8 years wiser.

For a lot of these clips, I think- ugh, if only it was so easy. It's great to get moving but if you set the expectations so high, it's easy for anyone to get discouraged and give up. 😢. I love the suggestion to use your own photos for goals. I've learned that i actually just dont want to improve myself - I want to look like someone else. I've never been happy regardless of my size. So I'm working to try and change my perspective. Stage one for me is neutrality and focusing on how I feel.

What are your thoughts on pure barre or any barre class? Issues I see even though I love it: 1. everyday is full body = no rest. 2. Works small muscles more than large muscles 3. Overwork core? 4. Not a lot of opportunities to progress weight Would love to hear your thoughts. And also, pure barre has a heavier weights class - would love to hear about if that’s better? Thanks!!! Love your channel!!
@JustinaErcole9 сағат бұрын
I think barre is a great complementary form of movement if you enjoy it, but it should never replace true strength training since it will not yield the same benefits (maintaining muscle mass and bone density).
