I have fine hair that is getting thinner as I get older. It tends to go flat on top, and gets frizzy too, if it’s humid out….but I found a great product that gives so much volume, and keeps my style. I use a blow dry cream with heat protectant on wet hair, then let my hair air dry a little. When it’s about 60-70% dry I spray the roots/layers on the top with ColorWow Raise the Root and blow dry with a round brush, using the cool setting before taking the brush out. You can use it on dry hair too, I think I’ve tried pretty much every volumizing spray on the planet, this one really works. It made the rounds on TikTok, maybe last year, hear, but I don’t watch TikTok. I just saw it in the store and thought I’d give it a try. So glad I did, hope they never stop making it. I’ve used other volumizing products from ColorWow and wasn’t impressed, but this one really does the job.

Look for a product designated as a 'matte wax' or 'dry wax' and try it out on a day when your hair's already dirty and you're staying home and it doesn't matter. Wax is pliable and endlessly reworkable, so just play! If your hair looks greasy and flat, blast it with a blowdryer on a cold setting for half a minute -- and play some more!

Hack #3 Non-Directional Drying blew my mind! I never once thought about the logic behind air-drying your hair and expecting it to behave the way you want it to behave. It makes total sense to me now why my hair won't do what I want it to do because I'm just hoping for the best...with no effort at all on my part. (In all honesty, the no-effort-part is exactly why I got a pixie in the first place, but, I'm so desperate to love my pixie that I'll take this tip and give it a try). Thanks so much for sharing your guidance with us!

Love the tip of "non-directional" drying. I am working on this to lessen my cowlicks and to help add volume to the top of my bob. I have had "pixie" cuts in the past (...and long layered shags along with many other styles). Once I reach my desired target weight in my journey to better health, I might do a pixie again. As a lifelong former pixie wearer, I so agree about the tapering by the ears! I have a "football" shaped head, the widest point is eye/ear level. I’m one that hates using product because I feel that I have to wash my hair much more often, plus the results don’t last throughout a whole day. As a result, I haven’t tried many styling products. Maybe I’ve used the wrong product or used it in the wrong way. No matter the cut, my hair has always flattened on the crown/temples. Perhaps you could give a lesson on kinds of styling products without it being a long infomercial? The tip on volumizing vs. thinning shears was helpful.
@justinhickox
@justinhickox Жыл бұрын
You’re definitely not alone. It’s all about the right product, which is why I didn’t recommend just one. It’s going to be different depending on hair texture, style, length, hair health etc. You may consider trying a dry powder style of product. They’re less likely to weigh your hair down and will still give you a lot of texture and movement. They can even encourage a bit of volume. The only downside is, like any product, your hair won’t feel “clean”. BUT, if your hair feels clean, it’s likely that the product in it won’t really do anything since the way products get results is to essentially make your hair dirty. Definitely worth a shot though…I think you may really like them. Just search for hair styling powder, or hair texture powder etc.

@@tishlowe6716 I've tried a ton of products and what I have found that works so well for me is a volumizing mousse--currently using Kenra 17. I dry my hair using my hands and pulling out from my head. After it's dry, I use a straightener, again pulling the pieces out from my head where I want lift. I rub Kenra texturizing taffy 13 into my fingers and run through my hair every which way, pulling and twisting where I want some spike and lift. Finish off with Kenra hairspray 30. I have it down to an art. 😁

American Crew Molding Clay $10-15usd and you don't need much, it's a texture in the middle of the 2 shown in the video. That one little 3oz container is probably going to last me the whole time my buzz cut is growing out. Because it doesn't show like product in your hair, I may use it no matter my length, really loving it. I appreciate you helping us out by being so detailed in your explanations, even putting up diagrams :). My buzzcut is finally getting past the awkward growing out stage and I'm considering pixie hair for a little bit, this helps. For me, mostly the bit about the sides of your hair.

Great video. I've had a pixie for years, but do struggle to get a decent short cut. I've gone through so many hairdressers since living in Aus. Long hair seems the norm. If I get a good cut, they can't seem to do it again or like last year (the best cut I had) I was told I couldn't request/wait for that stylist and they also don't colour. I now have another hairdresser but 4 weeks ago I had it done for my 35th anniversary celebrations (3 days later) but I struggled to style it and I noticed the sides weren't tapered and seemed one length. My hair grows quick and bulks, so I ended up back to her yesterday and coincidentally I asked her to try texturising it more, particularly the sides, and make the bangs pointy and it now feels much better! :):):):)

I have both, the Dyson and the Laifen blowdryers. The Laifen heat function stopped working after 4 months. I now pretty much use it to blow build-up dust from my computer keyboard, fans, heaters, etc... If you have fine hair, DON'T buy it because it is too strong therefore you can't control your hair. The power cord is so short that you literally have to stand very close to the power source. Seriously, WTF? Clearly, they did not design this with the hairstylist in mind, this makes no sense. The power cord is so heavy so if you were to add an extension cord, it's like working out with weights.

I knew because of cowlicks that cutting my long hair would not mean less work. I like what my stylist does to disguise my lack of a natural M by fringing the nape and giving me my own unique style.

Nothing wrong with that at all! The most important thing you can do is what makes you feel best. If that goes against what I say...ABSOLUTELY ignore me!

@@justinhickox I have only watched a few of your videos. I have noticed the emphasis you place on hair that moves, which is good for hair with a mind of its own. My hair is now cut following most of what is shown in this current video and drawing compliments. I do have strong cowlicks at the widow's peak and nape (off center). I am thankful to the stylists who have told me to stop trying to control them.

@@deborahwilson6970 Hey! Thanks for hanging out with me! I do believe movement is a big part of keeping things youthful and fun. Like you said, working with your hair is SO much easier than working against it. Glad you found a solid stylist!

Hi, which products do you recommend for fine hair, pixie cut, not a ton of hair yet not thin either. I see list of products, yet not sure if there's curated list for hair types as well. Thank you in advance, you are wonderful.

I have fine, straight-as-a-pin, VERY THICK hair....I used to wear my hair very long, usually in a bun or french braid but it was so heavy it literally hurt my scalp. Eventually, in my mid-30s I went for a pixie cut and felt like a helium balloon that had been released to the sky, except that it grows out so damn fast. I seem to be 'screwed' in all the suggested methods. I am definitely not into styling my hair every morning--I'm a get-up-and-go girl (now 64 yrs and counting), nor can I afford a regular trim at the appropriate time, several times a year. I am so discouraged (although I LOVE the colour of my hair that includes platinum blonde, dark blonde, red, and the occasional black hair too and now grey setting in at the temples that is so fine that it sticks out in all directions (as did my hair when I was a baby--standing straight up into the air.). I would LOVE a suggestion!!!!!

Thank you for this video. I moved across the country and am still searching for a hairstylist who even knows what a pixie cut is...post cut, I say to myself, "Not quite, but thanks for that "man cut." I'm going to show this video before my next cut... I also really like the micro bangs - very short on the side of the part and gradually lengthening to the other side, similar to Jamie Lee Curtis... very difficult to get someone to achieve - even when I show a photo or sketch an illustration. Personal texturizing shears is also a great tip.

I love wearing a pixit cut but it is really hard finding someone that actually knows how to cut one correctly. Do you use a razor when you do a pixie cut? It seems like razoring my hair works better. It is also hard fiding someone that is good with a razor, lol. I'm older and a pixie cut looks best on me. My profile photo isn't a pixie cut per se.

Love the pixie cut style but don't think I'd be brave enough to go for it as I think my face might be too wide for one. I need you to come up with that App so I can stick my face in and see what it would look like before commiting to a pixie cut. Also not sure I could commit to having to have a haircut every 6 weeks to maintain the look, seems high maintenance to me for a low maintenance look 😅

Great concerns! Pixie cuts can actually work really well for round faces. They just require more length and height on top and less on the sides to help elongate the face. As for the maintenance....yes, they can definitely be more than some longer shapes. Depending on how well the shape is cut into the hair, they can last longer than 8 weeks. It really just depends on the cut TBH.

My hairdresser kept going shorter and shorter.. it looked very manly.. first 2 cuts were great, then she went shorter each time even when I asked not to cut so short.. I went through 3 doing that, so I'm letting it grow out now 😢

I feel your pain. I've had a pixie cut for more than a year and I desperately want to love it, but 9 times out of 10, I hate the way my pixie looks on me. I've gone to at least 4 hair stylists over the past year and none of them listen to what I am asking for -- they just cut my hair in their own way, in their own style. Sigh.

I just want to thank you for your videos! I enjoy them and always learn something new from them - lots in this one, especially texturising shears - I've never seen those before and they're now on my shopping list! I'm afraid I've given up trying to find a hairdresser who will consistently do what I want, so have been cutting my own hair for several years now. (Sorry if that offends hairdressers!) I love how you include styles for the more "mature" woman and those with different types of hair. Thank you Justin. x

So, I must inherently know these things. I went to the stylist, asked to keep hair around my face. Also, in between appts, I shaved around my ears but left the rest alone. Told the stylist I just wanted the ends "cleaned up"! We'll, she doesn't know anything, she chopped my pixie bad, didn't clean the ends left it more uneven, and shaved all my hair around my face and buzz cut my head, after I said I didn't want it buzz cut again!....ugh!!!

Silver fox with an undercut pixie. My hair is thinning, so my hairdresser can’t do as much of an undercut as I want as the hair on the bottom has to blend in with my disappearing hairline on my right temple. I buy lots of product (still looking for the magic blend). Thanks for this video. I usually trim up on my sides between haircuts where it’s starting to grow out and make things look wonky.
