There are so many reasons Geddy is your favorite bass player’s favorite bass player. The fact that they pulled stuff like this off live just sets them above most popular acts from each generation they were part of. In my opinion, of course.

I really appreciate your sense of humor and vibe regarding this material. For me it’s special and nostalgic. Exit Stage was my first purchase and appreciation All things RUSH….but Power Windows was my first live experience! I even have a drumstick from that show! But I recognize and appreciate where you are coming from. I think it’s so great that they transitioned through so many styles via technology …..but they still remained RUSH….that to me, is one of the many things that make THEM special. Thanks for going thru this and giving me a new appreciation for their impact on music history!😊🍻

Don't feel bad about criticizing Rush. They persevered through a continuous barrage of it for much of their career. But, as relentless as the critics were, they were like rabbits going under Rush's spinning wheels and could never account for the loyal following that stands to this day.

Very well said. The main stream media had no idea where to categorize Rush, they did not fit into a neat little box. Rush is a totally fan driven phenomenon, the fans gave them license and the opportunity to explore and exploit their collective talents and we have all benefitted from it, their music will live on.

This is one of my favorite from the album that grew on me and stayed with me decades later, and one of my favorites in general. It's so.... Rush. Creative drumming, intense guitars, driving bass, observant lyrics, unique bridge, and it all builds up to a dramatic crescendo and contemplative ending that fades out. When that drumming started in the Clockwork Angels tour and I realized they were playing it, I was shocked and delighted to be hearing it again. They played this alongside Middletown Dreams, another favorite of mine. What a treat!

This song took a while to grow on me. Hearing it live, made a huge difference. It is on show of hands only in the concert video I believe, not the CD. Can’t remember if you said it to me or someone else, but I heard bass players will always have gigs. My 15-year-old just got his first gig playing bass in a church band. Which is funny because we never go to church. But thankfully it’s the same church that we would go to if we were going and he is happy because he will get paid $50 per gig . Not bad for 45 minutes of time once a week. Lol.

Sometimes it was difficult lyrically for Geddy to sing Neil's lyrics so he would have to rework them to fit the music. He would say that he'd have to believe them in order to sing them so sometimes he had to rewrite some of it.

Love this song lyrically, for the interesting drumming, and for that distinctive bass part, but some of the production choices render the song as a whole very dated. It’s interesting that they tried all of this stuff with sampling, sequencing, and high production, but I was glad they came out on the other side of that era once again sounding like a progressive hard rock band.

However, it's Rush's lack of variation as of Test or Echo that caused me to almost entirely stop listening to their albums. They spent the last 2 decades of their career in that hard rock groove, and it got old, quick. I'm glad the hard rock fans got their sound back, but sorry it was at the expense of those of us who appreciated the finer textures and intricacies of their music :(

Going through their discography as the albums were released, a lot of people listened to these for the first time wanting to hear 2112 2, Permanent Waves 2 or Moving Pictures 2 and were left disappointed. Now that their work is complete, I am glad the albums are so different and they were willing to abandon comfort zones.

Rhythmic brilliance and I love how they take the same parts and play them repeatedly with different sounds and instruments. I still like this song. I like Alex's snarling and slashing guitar and Geddy's bass is nice and forward in the mix. Neil is doing some interesting rhythms in the background. To me this harkens back to their MP/Signals days. I always wonder what you’d think (and what us long-time Rush fans would think) if THIS was their first album. We’re always comparing these 80’s albums to the epic albums that got us into Rush in the first place. As I listen to PW with fresh ears, the music is still amazing. It’s just not Permanent Waves or Xanadu-like. It would be interesting to see reaction videos starting with Clockwork Angels and going backwards, kinda like the R40 tour. :)

Cool info about the dead notes on the bass. I wasn’t sure what he was doing there, but it sounds really cool. Yeah to put some perspective on 1985, here are a few songs from some 70s rock artists. Robert Plant, little by little. Foreigner, I want to know what love is. Starship (formerly Jefferson airplane), we built this city. I guess the point I’m trying to make is, that I am glad that you’re understanding the context of this time period.

I can respect your view for sure, it's so different as someone who was growing up during this era. When this album (and Hold Your Fire) came out, I was so into them because of what else was going on in music. It was the height of New Wave, Hair Metal, and the older classic bands like Rush still slogging away at boring blues rock cliches, just older and more corny sounding. So these super digital, shiny Rush albums with deep lyrics were a breath of fresh air for me! I was so happy my favorite band was trying to change and adapt versus just putting out the same albums they had in the 70's. But I agree with you....these albums are super over produced and kind of abrasive and high end sounding. It really hits a peak on Hold Your Fire, then they start to go back to being more of a power trio over the next couple (still with thin production though) until you get to Counterparts. That album brings back the guts and oompf of the Rush sound! It is s shame too because the songwriting was amongst their best on these 80's albums, but the production and over bearing use of synth sounds swirling everywhere and too much electronic drums make them a bit hard to listen to now. For me the bright spot in this era was Alex believe it or not....he emerged with a style of guitar that combined the best of more New Wave and textural approaches with some of the classic hard rock sound to create a sound that I had never heard before. As if the Edge and Jimmy Page had a baby! Will be fun to watch your journey more through Rush's remaining catalog....I think you have a great perspective!

Also, now that we are like 60%ish the way through PW, you are WORKING your way through "Hold Your Fire" which as a Canadian I feel the need to say SORRRY. This is the album where I said "WTF", the first album (vinyl) I bought that I could not immediately turn over to hear side 2 while sitting on the floor in front of the tower speakers clutching & studying every inch of the album sleeve & cover. Certain terms come to mind; endless dribble, ear torture, cure for insomnia, coma inducing, blah blah blah. Sure there are interesting parts of each track but Geddy sounds like he's singing a ballad on every song. I think Time Stand Still is a good song ( featuring Aimee Mann on vocals ) and worthy as a single but what makes it even better is that it follows Force Ten. Force Ten is a stand alone single that has your senses going everywhere, like being at the Circus with crazy stuff happening all around you so when Time Stand Still starts you feel like your feet are back on solid ground, you exhale, say "WOW" (out loud) and listen on. Funny? thing about Force Ten is that it was an add-on, Producer Peter Collins felt the album needed a tenth track so Force Ten was written during pre-production. Force Ten definitely isn't a song to end an album with although maybe having it at the end of this album would, cleanse your pallet, bring you out of the fog & back to life like a defibrillator lol. This album ends Peter Collins short stint with Rush, 50/50, one good album and then this album. Was there foreshadowing with the album title and cover "art"? Were they literally saying "please, don't shoot us" for this, even though three shots have already penetrated the cover soaking it blood red. Hmm, I may have gone off ona bit of a rant here but what the hell good is an album if you can't listen to it front to back in one sitting? Just a bunch of similar sounding singles (excluding Force Ten) that, on there own, are alright tracks. Wait, it sounds like I am against Force Ten, no, FT is the Fun part of this album 😄. Again, I reiterate, SORRRY.

Going in and out of heavy rhythm to a light feel is the saving grace here, musically. Lyrically it's brilliant, of course. ( "In the middle of the 80's." Had to write something to go with the haircut Alex was sporting in the day). 😋

Like with Manhattan Project, the guitar part at the end (that super short "solo") is so cool. The bass line under the power chords is awesome as well. With regard to the "changing lyrics to suit Geddy". In order for Geddy to sing the lyrics with conviction, he has to buy into them, especially since he's not writing them. So it's not uncommon for Geddy to ask Neil for revisions to his lyrics or to take maybe a single line from something Neil submits and ask Neil to go back and focus on that. Lyrics are a very collaborative process between Neil and Geddy. Neil has said that he has no ego in this and he's just so thrilled when he submits something that Geddy (and/or Alex) likes that he's totally happy to take the feedback and go back and re-arrange or revise the lyrics to suite the song and Geddy's singing. I think in the early days, he would submit complete songs (and probably did up until the end) but not always.

For a while now Geddy's been getting wicked in the fadeouts. Here he does it front and center as part of the song, and it's great. The "better beer!" line here came up last year when official Rush beer was released in Canada. You can't get the beer in the US because of some weird legal thing, but we can at least see the commercials on YT and they're a riot. Neil was into African percussion around this time (he went to Africa and learned to play it from the people there), and you'll hear more of that on "Mystic Rhythms". About a year later Paul Simon had huge commercial and critical success using some of those sounds on his "Graceland" record. So the boys knew exactly what was happening, but the songs were too Rush to be popular.

I have two cases of the Rush beer in stow-away for special occasions. Everything they've produced so far has been excellent, in no small part because they did go with a Toronto-area brewery with a very good reputation.

yes, it's the 80s where technology and machines really began to take over "Can't feed the people but we feed the machines...." "Territories" is a Rush song that hits me super hard. I was serving my 8th and final year in the US Navy. Reagan had recently been inaugurated for his 2nd term and the budget for the military was still increasing. The US had been out of Vietnam for over a decade and the Gulf War invasion of Kuwait was 6 years away. People have told me that I'm lucky. But what about the people of Panama and Grenada. The US has been at war or "police actions" for 93% of its history since 1776.... 😭😭😭

I've always preferred the hard, guitar driven Rush sound, but Territories and Marathon are great on Power Windows.

This is one of the songs I really like on this album. It took a few listens. Yes, the over the top production is still there but it's not quite as much.

"Peart then rewrote them in more direct way which suited Lee better." Understand the confusion. It was wasn't a very good explanation of the process. Geddy and Neil have both addressed this multiple times over the years. Neil would present Geddy with lyrics, which would in some cases prove too awkward for Lee to be able to sing within the context of the song. Maybe the number of syllables in a verse didn't match up with the timing/length of the accompanying musical phrase, or the meaning wasn't clear, or the number of words were just too hard to sing, etc. So they would tweak/streamline the lyrics until Lee felt he could communicate Neil's ideas with more clarity and conviction. Geddy's dead notes were directly influenced by Jaco (he has said as much) - and you can totally hear that. I didn't care for this album much at all when it was released - and I could still take or leave this particular song - but I appreciate Power Windows as a whole far more now than I used to. It took a while.

This song is pretty good but not one of my favorites from the album. Of the ones you've listened to, Marathon is definitely my favorite and a genuinely great song. Upcoming, however, Middletown Dreams is definitely my favorite song on this album and one of my all time favorite Rush songs. Mystic Rhythms would probably be right there with Marathon second overall, and the live version on A Show of Hands is a truly great performance. The next album, Hold Your Fire, is not one of my favorites. The best songs are Time Stand Still, which is a Rush classic and one of my VERY favorite Rush songs, and Mission, which is excellent and has a fantastic live version on A Show of Hands (you get to hear all of the outro guitar solo on the live performance, which is awesome).

This is not my favorite Rush era, but I do love the sound f that Wal bass. It cuts through so cleanly but still has a round bottom end sound. I love the growl in his Rickenbacker, but the Wal was perfect for this mix. Glad he decided to ditch the Steinberger.

The next album hold your fire has alot of similarities. When u get to Presto they change again yeah there's keyboards but not as in your face and Alex has some heavier riffs. Roll the bones even more differnt. Once you get to Counterparts the keyboards vanish except on one song and not even that strong. That album sounded like the Rush I know . Again this my view Hold your fire just a hard one for me again parts.

This is where I cringe when this song is reacted to, the comments section is always full of "The lyrics are so relevant today!" Because the deep thought on it apparently begins and ends at: Nationalism = bad Globalism = good Is this song describing nationalism? Not really, sounds more like the elements of imperial hubris to me. And imperialism has this in common with globalism: the ability and power to economically and politically exploit other soveriegn nation-states and peoples and their resources and financial systems. It's just that the globalists have better marketing when they work towards their goals. For example, "spreading democracy" Nationalism by definition is not good or bad, it just is. One can have pride in own's one nation and not be exploitative nor belligerent towards other nations or peoples. Is this hard to get? A nationalist for example of the U.S. libertarian-ish stripe would advocate for a preservation of and prioritization of one's own national interests, which are also compatbile with international, non-exploitative, mutually benefical trade agreements, peace treaties, foreign policies based on non-aggression, and economic bridges built upon domestic production of goods in the import/export dynamics. False dichotomies, they get ya every time!

I’m of two minds about Rush during this era. I can appreciate their being true to an artistic vision and of not being afraid of change as well as trying to stay relevant during the heyday of synth based music. On the other hand, I think too much of anything isn’t good and they really just overdid the synths…way over the top. It’s also the actual synth sounds on this album and the over sanitized aesthetic that makes me very underwhelmed about this album overall.

As much as I like the music it's the lyrics that really work for me. I appreciate Neil questioning the wisdom of arrogant imperialists as they imposed their culture on everyone who had resources to plunder.

Rush's first "Dance" song. It's one of Rush's only songs that's in 4/4 time. It has a beat you can dance to. Russian people need to listen and understand this song. F Putin! SLAVA UKRAINI!

Another great tune ..... gave up on whip cream and sprinkles Rush in my late teens. Took me to the age of 30 to appreciate this era and low and behold .... this whip cream and sprinkles Power Windows became one of my favorites. Not including live lps .... easily top 5 or 7 for me. It's the lyrics Justin .... Peart was a wonderful word smith but in my youth it was the drum fills and heavy bass that moved me.
