I absolutely love this album! You playing this just reminded me of how much. You gotta check out them playing at the Rainbow live. Their version of Liar and Stone Cold Crazy and this song is absolutely fabulous. Thank you for doing this and the press was not kind to them at all.

You are one of the very few reactors who really hear John’s great bass playing. He’s as important as any one of the others in the band, so thanks for that.

My favorite thing you said was … Rolling Stone Go F Yourself. Critics always gave Queen a hard time. All the rubbish that came from their pathetic pens simply showed they couldn’t make it as actual writers in the so called real world. Hope you keep going. There are millions of us down here in the rabbit hole who love coming up to hear our favorite band 👑

Always liked it but relistening to it for the first time in a few years reminds me how good this album is. It has everything that makes Queen great. Awesome you got to hear most of these songs for the first time. Stone cold crazy and Now I’m here have always been near the top of my favorite queen songs.

Now I'm Here... the best track to listen to when settling your stereo. Love it! Although In The Lap of The Gods Revisited is possibly my favourite Queen track... maybe... well, it's definitely up there in the top 5... or 10 😅

British music critics and Rolling Stone were rarely kind to Queen. Some reviews were so vitriolic they were really cruel. They put Queen fans in the position of having to defend the band they loved. Rainbow, yes! Can't wait.
@Yaktahbay
@Yaktahbay Жыл бұрын
I can totally relate to the "having to defend the band they loved" comment. It often was tough being a Queen fan during the mid-to-late '70s; even Bohemian Rhapsody was far from universally loved at first.

As a Queen fan in America we were considered odd. I discovered Queen in 74, I thought how amazing this band is, just brilliant. But I loved classical, big band, ragtime ect. So I was into music my friends were not listening to, so I didn't care if they thought I was odd, they missed out on great music.😊

I really enjoyed your reactions to this whole album. I can still remember the day I bought this album in 1974. I had just been released from the hospital after fracturing my skull, I was 14 yrs old. My Dad took me to the record store to buy me an album. I already had every Zeppelin album that was released at that time. I had recently “borrowed” my older brother’s Queen 1 album and loved it so I picked this one. And was blown away, got Queen 2 a few weeks later. ✌️♥️🎶

The live version is even better because the audience sings along with the chorus. This was Freddie's first attempt to write a song that the audience would sing along with. During the 1986 Magic Tour, it was typically performed in a medley that would segue into “Seven Seas of Rhye,” as heard on such live concert recordings as Live at Wembley and Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live in Budapest.

I'd love to be drinking a beer in a crowed pub singing this chorus along with everyone there. This is an unheralded drinking song.

I would gladly join you. Any fan of early Queen is no stranger but a friend of mine. What a ridiculously talented band they were throughout the 70s. I actually think their first 5 albums stand up to any first 5 from any band, anywhere, ever.

I love this song and this album so much, thank you for reviewing and reacting to the whole thing. The press was very harsh on Queen as was much of the music community, often insisting if not for the theatrics, costumes, pyrotechnics and lights that the band would be as bland and pasty as yesterday's oatmeal. They were not fond of the fact that Queen interacted with the audience because up to that time, bands mostly just stood at their microphones and played their part without trying to engage the crowd. Queen's new "ideas" were just not loved by the press but they certainly were loved by the fans. Queen sold a lot of albums which proves that critics didn't/don't really have their finger on the pulse of the public.

Their first attempt at writing an anthem for the crowd to sing. They still do it today with Adam Lambert. I saw them in 2020, the whole crowd was singing it and waving their phones in the air. Still the masters of crowd participation.

yeah one of Freddies Brian said when he critiqued them in smile he would say they should interact with the audience more Brian said it wasn't what bands did at the time, he didn't like the audience joining it at first he found it annoying but came round to it and wrote rock you but Freddie was always very much to include the audience

Always liked Circus magazine and hated Rolling Stone. You can imagine the crowd swaying and singing along with this song. Brian always introduced it saying " we will leave you in the Lap of the Gods!" It has always been one of my favourites. Another one of Freddie's beautiful melodies. One of Queen's best albums. The next one is most people's favourite album. Can't wait to hear your reaction to it!

I was young and very much a Queen fan when this album came out. I used to read reviews of their albums and live shows when they came to town and Queen never got the respect they deserved. It used to make me so angry! If you are doing reactions to Queen live can you please react to Now I’m Here live at wembley 1986. You will see how unfair the reviews were because they were amazing live! Great reaction to this album which is one of my favorites!!

Queen loved to include the audience. Many critics were very harsh to Queen, which made some people not even listen to Queen, they called them arrogant, one critic said Queen was the first fascist band. Bull Crap. What is so pathetic is that Queen never won a Grammy for any of their songs. Well thanks for reacting to Queen. Loved your critique of the albums.

OK - Assuming we are doing Opera next, it will be a roller-coaster not just because of the music, but because of the classics that Justin knows, his previous reactions (Prophet's and '39 live - a little different than '39 on the album), and what Justin hasn't heard yet... I'm predicting Death On Two Legs (Freddie) and I'm In Love With My Car (Roger)... assuming Justin has heard Deacon hit "Best Friend" b/c it's prob on those "Queen Hits" albums that he has....

Awesome going thru this with you. A great album. I think critics didn't know what to do with Queen and probably with Freddie himself. I can guess why, but really don't have to based on comments they threw at him in interviews. So they chose to ignore the excellent music and focus on snark. Band is still going. Still drawing huge crowds and selling out concerts. Freddie is unique & awesome. The whole band is a united force of power and talent.

Yes, the potential and talent were there from the start, but they needed to have greater financial support to get there. Once Trident saw how much money Queen could make them, the wallet opened a bit more for recording and production. It hurts to think about how much better the second album (my personal favorite) could have sounded if they had the budget of Sheer Heart Attack or Night at the Opera.
@bluebell3720
@bluebell3720 Жыл бұрын
they didn't really get more money, they didn't get royalties. when they got a top ten with seven seas they allowed them proper studio time, previously they had to record all hours of night when no one paying for the studio was using them not having proper money or royalties and john not having money for a deposit and Roger not allowed to brake drumsticks! pushed Freddie too far Roger said Freddie told them he wasn't willing to carry on if things didn't change Freddie insisted to find a lawyer and proper manager and get out from Trident which they did 75 they still used trident as well as other studios but were buying their way of if trident and had managed to get a direct deal with EMI who took a chance and gave them a huge budget for night at the opera it's not just budget though but obviously it does to some degree the situation was the same for the first two albums but Roy took too much control in the production on the first one and they weren't happy at all with the final product and took more control on the second also they needed time to learn, trident were quite advanced with equipment at the time but they had to experiment how to get the sound they were going for, they had the talent but lacked the experience in the studio Roy was very good once he stepped back and helped them achieve what they wanted rather than take control with this album they did have better schedules and more studio time but weren't receiving money but the studio time was free

Probably my favorite album although the next one is probably “better”. It’s just so consistent. Btw - Just a warning for when/if you listen to love at the Rainbow - Not everyone knows this but, Queen Productions, like many other production companies, put a decent amount of pitch correction and overdubs on their live albums. There are a few great videos on the comparison between what actually was done vs the official album. To see the authentic version you would probably have to find a non official release.
