This song is one of Queen's earliest anthems. It was brought back in medley form in their last tour in 1986. You can see that most of their songs were written for live audiences. This one has a really big sound, but Freddie's voice is easily heard, still strong with encores coming up.

There's a quite a bit of compression added to the vocal track on this recording but, my God Fred's voice was just... SOMETHING!

The reason I first became addicted to Freddie & Queen is because the variety is ENDLESS, including the fact that Fred never sings a song the same way in every different performance… I ADMIRE how he always improvises different notes (in one performance, he’ll sing a line high, in another he’ll sing it going down instead etc.) My ears NEVER get bored!

This was the closer until We Are The Champions was written. I went to see Queen on the Day of the Races tour and this was the closer. Then the super fun encores would begin! Brian, Freddie and even Roger talked to the audience a lot more than they did in the 80s. Those concerts in arenas less than 20,000 people became very intimate. Freddie was incredibly charismatic.

About the amount of short songs. The concert is from the tour that features the *Sheer Heart Attack* album. The Sheer Heart Attack album is actually Queen's one album with mostly short songs. The average song length on this album is under 3 minutes, with 12 of the 13 tracks being rather short. This is actually an exception in the Queen catalog, and so - while Queen has song medleys on all of their tours - the amount of shorter song is also an exception for Queen tours. And I actually never noticed that until you mentioned it. 🤣

One of Freddies His first deliberate attempt to write a song for audience participation Though he was always trying to get them involved!

That long shot of the stage in this video made me think about just how many other 4-piece rock bands like Queen there were back then, and how competitive it must have been for a band like them to break through. Just in England there was Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who, Foghat, Nazareth, Bad Company, Humble Pie, plus probably tons more who never really made it past the college circuit. Plus this is around the time the NWOBHM bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were getting started. Good times for hard rock music!

There was an encore that isn't shown here. It's a great concert, Queen always was so good live. It was short because it was televised. Thank you.

The encore is showed this is not the live at the Hammersmith '75 performance. This performance was not televised.

Would be a great Celtic musical with backing vocals as Freddie laments....Hilarious, I just looked up Freddie's description of the tune and here is his quote " Somebody said this sounds like Cecil B. De Mille meets Walt Disney or something." Guess I'm not the only one.

If you have ever performed within one of those smoke screens, it can really make singing or speaking a challenge. But at the time it was one of the few big ways to garner attention - to the point crowds expected it. I still hear Roger's high notes even when not sung!

Nice reaction. There are some incorrect information in the comments regarding the show. This show was a normal length show about 2 hours, Queen always had quite a few short songs, while many other bands at the time had long songs. There is an encore with a few more songs. On top of that some of the footage was corrupted and could not be rescued, from this show. This show was released on DVD alongside a CD or album version as well. The album version does practically have the full show, the audio was still just as good as the rest of the show and could be used on an album. Therefore I suggest you also have to listen to, The Great King Rat live at the Rainbow 1974, this live version is far better then the studio version, Queen could not get the drums on the studio right, this is actually quite a heavy and even metal sounding song. The other song I would suggest is See What A Fool I ve Been this was a B - side from Queen II, it is different because it is Queen doing a heavy blues rock number, in the style more closer to Led Zeppelin, it is a great number. Even the Fairy Fellers Master-stroke was done live at this concert and can be found on the album version of the concert. There were no time restrictions this was a normal Queen show during their normal touring schedule, so the show is around 2 hours long. People confuse this show with the Hammersmith Odeon 1975, that concert was only an hour because it was televised. (Hammersmith '75 is also a great concert). You were right there was extra harmonies on Now I am here and it had nothing to do with overdubs or anything. There was a few songs that was released as a movie and it was shown around Britain at the time, the harmonies from studio album was added into those songs, that was used for the movie. It was very likely not even Queen who did that originally. But after all of these years, that footage was the only available footage from that part of the concert that could be found and used. They tried to remove the harmonies, but it wasn't completely successful, so basically Now I am Here does have extra harmonies that was added from the studio version. Queen did do overdubs to live releases, but it is very small details just a few seconds at a time, and there is actually very few overdubs in general, there are some show with just like 3 overdubs. Most other bands at this time did far more overdubs then Queen. Led Zeppelin for example hired a studio and set up their stage, they re-performed audio and video of about three quarters for one of their live show releases! lol

“In the Lap of the Gods… Revisited” was Freddie Mercury’s first attempt to write a song that the audience would sing along to, similar to 1977’s “We Are the Champions.” It was one of Queen’s set closers between 1974 and 1977. During the 1986 Magic Tour, it was typically performed in a medley that would segue into “Seven Seas of Rhye,” culminating in "Tear It Up" as was heard on such live concert recordings as Live at Wembley and Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live in Budapest. Here is the video of Queen on night #2 at Wembley| performing In the Lap of the Gods, Seven Seas of Rhye, and Tear It Up" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZOQpoiwgdpmjcU I disagree with your assessment because believe their performance of "Liar" is outstanding!
