They both change their names when they get thermals and it is essentially a new tank. The U for example gets the UM package with the thermal modification installed.

T-80UM2 was a prototype, they used a turret without thermals equipped because of this. I'm sure that a mainline production variant would be issued thermals but not the prototype.

Fun fact: Gaijin modeled this completely wrong. The UM-2 is completely modeled wrong in game for multiple reasons. The UM-2 came out in 98’ which followed the UM-1 in 97’ and the UM from 95. The commander and gunners positions were swapped and included a brand new fire control system as part of the change which more than likely included thermals as new optics were required as the positions of the crew were changed. Also the gun was fed ammunition via an improved type of automatic loading system. The magazine was moved from below the turret to the bustle, at the back of the turret, apparently in response to survivability concerns highlighted during fighting in Chechnya. They wouldn’t have rearranged everything in the tank and improved many systems and not given it thermals. It was NOT based on the T-80U and was actually based on the T-80UM. If you look into the tank at all you’ll realize Gaijin really fumbled the ball with this vehicle and it’s a shame. Remember this is during the time they were looking to modernize a ton of stuff with thermal imagers and possibly have a new MBT. No way a brand new and expensive prototype didn’t feature thermals.

Absolutely, also it should have Drozd-2 APS not Drozd-1. I am 100% sure gaijin does this on-purpose, they stick to low production vehicles/prototypes for event vehicles, but then remove what makes them unique, perhaps out of fear it will be too good. Or they are just lazy..

Welcome to Ape Sex Predators, where all of the new vehicles are modeled wrong! Literally. The F-16s are wrong, the Mig-29 is wrong, the Tornados are wrong, the Strela is wrong, the Gepard 1A2 is wrong, the AMX-32-105 which was touted as having a "faster reload" than the 120 counterpart reloads in the exact same time as well... they fucked literally everything. I'm not even sure why we're surprised anymore. The silver lining is that the new map (Golden Quarry) is actually alright compared to what we usually get, but even there one side's helis spawn *behind* hills and the others *on* hills with no cover. Luckily they also fucked the coding on snow which has the same speed modifier as roads (for now) so snowy maps play well for once. That will change, of course. No fun is allowed in this game.

Just grinded it out today, coming from leopard2a6 I can only say I barely missed the thermals, the t80 chassis is just so much fun, and I performed way better with just basic upgrades than my spaded leopard. I love it and it’s so worth it.

The one thing I could see this APS system being good for is to punish people using lower br vehicles in combination with a pack premium. For example, something like the new 'wolfpack' premium for the US with the M901 squadron vehicle as a backup or the obj-122MT with the ZTZ99-(p)

Hey Justin, pls don't use constant 100% collective in heli's, it causes your rotor rpm to be lower (and your heli to fly less good and lose it's rpm quicker and making you stall), the best would be between 88-98%

Based on my experience with the t55amd-1 it is 100% effective and reliable as long as the incoming threat is within the specs. But sometimes I have had to tilt the whole tank up to stop a heli from deleting me since the 20 degrees of protection isn't enough for helis that are close.

The aps on the t80 is about double the effective width as the t55. It also has double the charges. The t55 only has a total of 4 charges. Adding the extra mount to each side is also how the additional coverage is accomplished.

Not having thermals definitely seems like a downgrade compared to the T-80U. But then again, if you are only getting it for collection, that won't be much of an issue. Also, I definitely agree the vessel (USS Newport News) will be selling the highest among the rewards of this event. It's a Des Moines-class, on paper it's auto-loading 8 inch guns can fire 3 times faster than the Baltimore, which is currently selling for around 60 gjn.

Completely unnecessary 95% copy-paste filler in it's current state. Happy that I didn't grind it at all. Weighs 47 tons which is as much as the BVM, all for mostly useless APS cause 90% of your deaths are from APFSDS. The normal 80U tanks weigh 1 ton less which is a tiny, yet real change in mobility. The loss of thermals is the biggest dealbreaker of all for me.

I skipped the ground grind entirely after getting 1 mark because it was practically infeasible to do in a reasonable amount of time. The air I can at least do a little faster. But both air and ground event vehicles are pointless. I've been playing since 2013, and they are really getting lazy with what the event vehicles are while simultaneously absolutely massively cranking up the amount of grind required to get them. This is the last event I will ever grind. Vehicles are super boring and unimagined and not unique. The grind is just an extra turd sprinkled on top. Not all early event vehicles have been winners either, but man the last year or two have been super boring vehicles.
