Just in case anyone else found the Dmin strumming pattern tricky, here's Justin's breakdown of it formatted as D=down U=Up, and x=click (down swipe): Fast half: [D D U X] Normal half: [U D U X] Together: [D D U X | U D U X] Repeat only on the 2nd, 4th, ect. run you can now start the fast half with an U instead of a D to make it flow better... Hope this helps

Justin - yes, it was 3 years ago, but I'll remind you that it's a spectacular lesson. Couldn't have gotten this strum pattern without your help. My wife pointed me to this series when she saw me struggling. "I found this guy on YT who teaches it really well." When I saw, it was you, I was like, that's not just some random guy... that's Justin Sandercoe. Of course it's a great lesson. Wish I was able to make it to your Socal clinic with Marty.

wow good stuff mate, most tutorials i see are just people fluffing around with which finger goes where and explaining it so damn slow that you just get lost, and dont even know where youre at in the riff. but i like how you do it and you constantly come back to playing it all together so we can see the progress of the riff
@jdean00019 жыл бұрын
Can't say thanks enough for this tutorial. I'm a fairly good guitar player who plays by ear, can't read music or tabs. Loved this song since it's release but could never figure out the leads and fills accurately. Until I came across your Vids. Thanks so much. Now my classic rock band plays this song at all our gigs (three to four times a week), and the audience loves it!

Tabs are just a diagram of the six strings, the numbers are the frets, and there's usually a legend showing what symbols are used for hammer on, slide, etc. There's really nothing to it.

@kevinCaseMusic14 жыл бұрын
@aussiepassenger If you notice justin may be holding down the lower strings with a barre technique on the left hand, but his picking hand is focusing on the middle/upper strings. Sometimes when your strumming and trying to get a fluttery sound that isn't muddy you'll kinda start your chord stroke on the fourth or fifth string. You'll still fret the other notes so you don't get dissonance but it's a more trebl-y sound.
@larrygeetar93098 жыл бұрын
Justin, great lesson on the rhythm guitar in this song. Once again you emphasize how important rhythm guitar and the feel of the music are one in the same. Playing rhythm is kind of a lost art these days and I appreciate your commitment to its importance. BTW, I think it's David Knopfler playing rhythm on this track, so it could be him playing with a pick while Mark does the lead work fingerstyle. Amazing tune, perfect playing by Mark.

I've been playing guitar for about a week now, i know 9 chords off the top of my head, none of them in this song, but i'm still giving it a go. Even if you dont learn to play the whole song, you will learn something. I learnt how to slide. I got the B slide riff down already, and cant stop playing it when i'm just messing around with the guitar trying different chords and strumming patterns out. Wow quite a long reply to basically say stop bitching and get playing.

@streetballer4rel notice that the bottom string is muted through almost the whole thing, and the second-lowest doesn't get much use either. The whole lead part revolves almost entirely around the top 4 strings. "Allright now" by free is similar. In fact, in the studio sometimes they'll take the bottom two strings off!

The rythm guitarist was Mark Knopfler's brother and founder of dire straits, David Knopfler, who left the band midway through recording their third album. The rythm "issue" you're referring to at 1.50 is a flamenco downsweep where you rake your fingers downward across the strings in rapid succession, opening them one after the other. The brothers both learned to play spanish finger style and later applier their techniques to electric playing, which is what makes their style so hard to recreate.
