Many years ago, as I was learning to play the guitar (through your beginner's course actually - thank you!) I wanted to play something that sounded waltzy so I looked up "waltz guitar" and found this song. That's how I discovered ES and was completely entranced by his music. I recall only listening to his stuff for about 4 months straight and him becoming my favourite songwriter. A very happy accident indeed!

Love your lessons. Thankyou for this. Elliott Smith is one of those artists you discover and he just refuses to leave your soul from that moment onward. I'm so grateful he managed to leave us as much music as he did, given the troubles he had it must have taken a lot to get it out.

Hey dogwater, just wanna say i agree whole-heartedly with this sentiment. Elliott was a true musical genius- & i dont use that word lightly. Geniuses are rare and undeniably special. If i was forced to make a list of my all-time favorite songwriters, which would be such a laborious project given the fact that im so passionate about all kinds of different music genres, all i can say for sure is that Elliott would be somewhere in the top 5. He sings straight from his soul. There is no artifice in his songs. It gives me hope that there are many others who love Elliott and who get his soft yet confrontational energy. And as a guitarist, its always a fascinating challenge to learn an Elliott tune. Even his songs that sound easy are never so. He was an AMAZING guitarist.. I cover a few of his tunes but i will never do them justice.

Little correction for anyone who sees this. The last chord in the verse ("who he takes around town") should have pinky on the third fret of the B string to make it an E7 and not a regular E major. Listen to the recording or live performance and you'll hear it.

This is just what i need. Re-learning the song as I stopped playing it for about 15 yrs. (It was the first Elliott Smith song I learnt) Yeah defo not the most difficult ES song but not his easiest either. Thankyou for taking the time to do this for us - and keeping the songs alive - He was such a genius.

Tears... It must've been hard for Elliott to play this song so much since it's a really sad tune. Life is sad... I became crippled 4 yrs ago, and when I hear something this beautiful, I wish I could grab my guitar and have a go, but I prob couldn't hit those vocal notes the way you do, anyway. Great video, Justin!
