Hey there, So I'm thirteen years old and have lordosis :( because I'm not fat it doesn't look severe, but when I lie against a straight surface I can fit an arm through the space between my lower back and e.g. the floor. I'm planning to do the exercises, but how am I supposed to sit in a chair? As my lordosis comes from slouching when sitting and standing, and I don't want to get rid of my progress by sitting wrong. And how do you achieve the 'correct' body posture; how do you stand? Also, would a back brace help?

Hello Justin, I am an Italian girl living in Italy. I think I have both because I have lordosis, hyperextended knees, anterior pelvic rotation (more to the left side) and I feel like a limbo rocker. I have no balance. Furthermore I have trochanteric bursitis (right and left sides, more to the right) and psoas and piriformis muscles inflammation (more to the right side). I feel very very bad and upset. Physiotherapists are unable to help me, I do all the exercises they told me but I don't feel better. Now I'm wearing orthotics made for my shoes but it isn't enough. Could you please recommend me any exercises to reduce the pain? I would like to sleep again. Many thanks. Marianna

Great video.I've watched a few of your videos but I'm still confused. I have a mixture of the two postures you mention. I got the impression that swayback involves long psoas and lordosis its due to a short psoas. If I have both, am i to stretch or strengthen it? I'd appreciate your help!

Hola Justin, I have both issues. But here's an issue that i got and I was wondering if you can give any advice. The top part of my spine (cervical) is curved in, its soo curved in that it looks like an upside down J. What type of neck or upper body exercises do you recommend to at least try to align it?? The only advice I've gotten is to tilt my head back :/
@JustinArcherThePostureGuy10 жыл бұрын
Hi Marley, Tilting your head back usually results in impingement. Instead think about pulling your head up and back (like so: Day 189: Pulling your #shoulders back vs pulling your #head back) I would also recommend you checking out "How To Straighten Out Your Swan Neck (Cervical Hyperextension) over at www.thepostureguy.com/neck-pain/how-to-straighten-out-your-swan-neck-cervical-hyperextension/ AND... What Causes Neck Pain? @ www.thepostureguy.com/what-causes-neck-pain Start with these and if after you feel you need more of a customized approach to help with your particular pain, posture, and/or performance issues that you're currently struggling with, then make sure to check out both the Optimized Self Workshop/Course and Skype Therapy Retainers that I offer. I have been taught that if there is no posterior tilt, regardless of the positions of the shoulders, it can't be a swayback posture. And that visually you can't tell, you must assess to see the degree of the pelvic tilt? Is this not correct from your point of view?? I don't mean sound antagonistic, I am still studying and just need some clarification. I have got myself all confused!!! I hope you can help, thanks for the posts x

i have an anterior pelvic tilt but really tight hamstrings, i don't get it, i thought a posterior pelvic tilt was indiciative of tight hamstrings and anterior is indicative of weak quads. can you explain?
@kclaunch9 жыл бұрын
ryguyiskindofaflyguy Because your hamstring muscles attach on your ischial tuberosities (your sitting bones) when you tilt your pelvis forward it pulls them into a tightened position, so yes, that is exactly right. Posterior pelvic tilt will put the hamstrings in a slack position and the quadriceps in a tightened position (since some of your quads/front compartment muscles attach on the front of the pelvis).

Pretty sure spinal lordosis\kyphosis is permanent, unless you're like 8-12 years old or young. Usually by the time you realize you have the curve, no amount of exercise will reverse it. And there will be no doctors willing to help you with spinal operations because they will tell you that the aesthetical benefits is not worth the risk. You might be able to breath or "feel healthier" or perform better, but once you look like a hump, you will never stand straight ever again. But if you can show me one person that has managed to restraighten their curved spined AFTER it has been curved, through exercise, i would gladly eat my words. ------------------------------------- All in all, exercises are a PREVENTION measure, there is no fix.
@kylerileyholisticlifestyle53839 жыл бұрын
Incorrect, you can correct both of the conditions mentioned through stretching/strengthening work. It takes work but it can be done. The position of the spine is due to the directional force of the muscular imbalance, so if you balance out the muscles, it will reposition the spine. Even if it is purely spinal, it can be manipulated. Exercises are most certainly corrective as well as preventative. I have worked with many clients suffering with lumbar lordosis and corrected from lordosis back into a neutral position
@TheLarousse899 жыл бұрын
Its just about your muscles. Saying you can't fix your posture is like saying that you can't get in shape after you are 8-12 years old. You can, and much the same way, with proper stretching of tight muscles pulling you out of shape, and working out of loose muscles that aren't pulling you into proper posture..you can fix these things. There are some people that will not be able to straighten out because of spinal deformation, but you'd know that before going into this if that was the case.
@Blakostructr9 жыл бұрын
Rhea Kamikawa I don't think you understand, the curve isn't permanent, it's only there when your body is fully extended due to the tilting of the hips. If someone with lordosis lays on their back with their knees bent, their spine straightens completely. So this means the curvature isn't permanent, it's only there when the hips are bent forward.
@OptimizedSelfNinja9 жыл бұрын
Sorry, for whatever reason, my reply/comment above didn't properly tag you. - Justin Hhmmm...did it again, darn. Anyone know how to fix what's going on?
@TheLarousse899 жыл бұрын
Rhea Kamikawa also, me. I am en route to fixing my lordosis. I started seriously fixing it sometime in late February/early march. I've been consistent stretching my pec's and quads, and working my core/hamstrings/extensors/upper back and shoulders....and relative to a picture of me in Italy in 2010....my posture has vastly improved. Neutral. I still have to focus on it though, though not as much as I used to. Just because my abdominals aren't as strong as they should be quite yet. But Rome wasn't built in a day.

@JustinArcherThePostureGuy10 жыл бұрын
If your have an anterior pelvic tilt (belt tipped forward) along with lordosis, which it sounds like you do, your lower back muscles are already under a great amount of strain do to their compromised length, tension, tone, position, and function. Then when you add cold weather on top of all that the muscles become tenser and tighter in an effort to keep you warm and thus causes an increase in your symptom(s). Have you tried either of the exercises routines yet? If so, how did you feel before, during, and after doing them?

Hi Marianna, I apologize for not getting back to you till just now. I miss comments from time to time, but the fastest way to get ahold of me and get a response is on Twitter @ThePostureGuy. Anyway, I would recommend you go to my site and search for each of the posture deviations you mentioned in your first comment. But I would also make it a point to audit the other foundations of your health (like your breathing, hydration, sleep, nutrition, stress, and movement), determine the quality of each, and then ask yourself how the way your approaching each is making your symptoms better or worse. A good video to watch about this can be found at www.thepostureguy.com/educational/is-your-bodys-emergency-brakes-on/ I hope this helps point you in the right direction. If there is anything else I could do just shoot me a Tweet. I look forward to hearing from you again soon. Until then… Take care and keep moving, Justin Archer aka "The Posture Guy” Tweet Me @ThePostureGuy Learn About Me: about.me/justinarcher Work With Me: bit.ly/tpg1on1 Optimized Self Workshop/Course: bit.ly/tpgoswc

***** Many thanks for your reply. My orthopedist would cut open my fascia lata because of my trochanteric bursitis. I would like to avoid this operation but this 24H pain in the legs and lumbar region is driving me crazy. I will let you know. Marianna
