You have very quickly become someone who's videos I will drop everything to watch. Your relaxed vibe is just great and I love learning about trees. I got into woodworking a couple years ago and for a while it was just wood. Over the summer I started collecting some local stuff and that has made me way more interested in the trees and paying attention more to what's around me!

You gave an absolutely MARVALOUS answer to those that have that mentality of "hOw DaRe YoU mAkE tHiNgS fRoM wOoD" and I applaud you for taking the time to do so. I already knew that most of your wood is deadfall or donated by others that got it trough similar mean. But, even if that weren't the case, hobbyists are not a threat to the environment. Even ones with little regard for conservancy would have very little impact because they simply don't have the time or capability to do any real harm.

Hey Justin! I think the reason so many people are asking for more how-to style videos comes down to how warm and welcoming your presentation style, you feel like a teacher who just wants their students to learn rather than show some sort of amazing inherit skill from the start and that’s something I think a lot of people long for. Totally understand why you’d rather leave that work to folks who have been doing this for longer at a higher level, just wanted to mention this so you know why (I think) people want so badly to learn from you. Thanks for sharing everything you do!

Your channel isn’t popular because of the insane pieces you make (even tho they are cool), it’s you. Your passion and personality is seen by all of us, and we’ve been sucked into something as previously trivial as trees. Keep being cool and lovin trees

I love the bit about not thinking of things as two separate worlds. There's a forest near Atlanta, Weelaunee Forest, and it's in danger of being cut down to make way for a concrete compound right now. I wish people would think of what that would do to the entire surrounding area. It's such a necessary forest

Have you ever done anything with Lilac wood? My husband and I had to cut down some that were overgrown and hadn't been pruned in years, that were growing into our fence (they have since started growing back). The wood was very interesting with a lot of purple throughout the grain. Unfortunately we used it as firewood and dont have any left. It does have a nice scent to it when burning, would possibly make a good incense as well.

Watching your videos really inspired me to pay attention to the diverse forest around me on my trip to Yosemite and Sequoia national parks. I learned about the trees, their uses, their identifying features, their cultural significance, the roles they play in their ecosystem. This made my trip even more impactful. I was hiking across the rocks and hills, these incredible geological features. I was reading the stories the trees were telling. I could tell where i was based on the trees, the climate, the elevation. I felt connected and humbled in a way I never had been; I couldn’t help but be moved to tears.

I know you don’t like answering questions, but to get into carving should I start watching tutorials and stuff? Or should I take a class? I’m mostly lost in that sense. Also I really like this series of what’s in that pile!
@Kyle-cu7qz
@Kyle-cu7qz Жыл бұрын
If its with a lathe or a table saw or other such equipment like that, I would recommend a class if you haven't already used them before, as it is remarkably east to ruin a finger or two if you don't know what you are doing. Otherwise, if it's manual carving, or if you know how to use the tools already, I think tutorials or the like should be fine. There are a ton of woodworkers out there who offer excellent advice for both safety and for different ways of woodworking. A class won't cover all the various ways to woodwork, it covers a specific style, usually the one the instructor is used to, and they are usually heavily safety oriented, which isn't a bad thing mind you, but if you are already familiar and comfortable with tool safety on devices there is no need to go through that.

Pretty cool you're from Utah, I am too. The trees where I'm at in particular are beautiful in spring, with white and pink flowers and buds. They produce a horrid smell. Bit of a small rant there, but I really admire your passion. Whenever I hear someone talk about something they really love, it usually makes me interested and love it as well. The same thing has happened here, I'm really getting into trees now. You've done your main job I guess, love your work.

I really like the longer form video. You are my bridge from wood working to tree things (forestry/arboristry????). I never asked "what does this tree look like in nature, where does it come from?" I think this is important for any wood worker. Especially with species that can be detrimentally impacted or aren't common imports. My favorite import is Australian Red Cedar because the story of the boards i found (they were imported 22 year ago). Also I'm a big fan of fire ecology ideas from indigenous teachings or selective logging here fire has been suppressed for to many years.

Im really enjoying this process you have for log selection into what they become. Ive been trying this myself with the trees on my property as some of them were very beautiful before they either fell in a storm or due to rot. How do you prevent splitting on your logs? As a fellow wood worker, and general contractor, I would like to point out that there are many manufactured tree species or breeds that grow very quick and provide most of the wood i build or remodel homes with every day, there are also alot of species I use that are special and slow growi.g, I offset as much as possible by using wood that is cut down by lawn care guys, maintenance guys, or people clearing land for new construction.

There's this really awesome tree that is native to the rocky mountain regions like Nothern Utah and Western Colorado that's called the "Narrowleaf Cottenwood" tree. I really love this tree but I don't really know much about it. If you could get your hands on a piece of this tree that would be awesome! I love what you do and I've always loved woodworking I just can't do it much. All I've made are 2 slimline pens and I just realized that I barely know anything about the wood used in those pens. You've inspired me to research more on trees in general and the ones that are close to home that I see everyday yet hardly know much about. So for that I thank you.

in highschool i feel in love with the trades but eventually fell out of it due to hostility and mocking. you brought me back into them, and helped me figure out what i want to do for a living. it's welding if you're curious. what does that have to do with trees: woodworking is also a trade that's what. you helped me find a path when i was feeling pretty lost and scared because i do NOT do well in academia and am terrified of going into debt. trade schools (for anyone interested in hard labor like me for some reason) generally put you into $10,000 or less student debt (if you're really poor and are going to a community college trade program like me fasfa will pay for the whole thing and leave you with extra money you can do whatever with).
