You would have had to be in the 1980's to really see what this song did to Debarge fans as we anticipated the release of this Album after All This Love and I like it were on their previous album. We were in awe of this Album!

This is one of those songs that fit perfectly the time it came out. I remember exactly what was going on in my life at the time this song and album hit, and it always takes me there instantly. I know many songs do that, but for me, this one in particular is a true, significant time capsule. I don’t even think of it as old school as they like to call it now, because it still sounds as fresh as the day it was released, and I certainly feel just as young.

Agree with you completely. If you’re a fan of old school hip hop why wouldn’t you appreciate 80s R&B. I personally love seeking out the original music that’s sampled and finding 80s hits which I now love. I first heard ‘Foolish’ before ‘One More Chance’ and then this gem.

This song wasn't nearly as popular when the album released as it became over time, first as a music heads fave, then the hip hop sampling. It is simplistic beauty.

DeBarge was the musical lick in the 1980s...play some DeBarge alone with your girlfriend and the rest would follow. lol The DeBarge Unsung is crazy how they grew up ni Detroit. Unsung is a very solid series with a lot of episodes on artists that you have reacted to. You should check out Unsung and see what you like as many Unsung episodes have been uploaded onto KZbin.

That unsung was so sad. I guess Miss Debarge made the wrong choice marrying that horrible creature of a man. The brother Bobby was wrong introducing his siblings to drugs which inevitably killed there career. I didn't enjoy that unsung at all.

This isn't a sample, it's called a JACK. The difference between the two is producers like Primo and RZA who sample a track but only take elements from it to add to the overall beat they're cooking up...producers like Puff and Irv Gotti were complete jackers of music. They take the whole thing and just have dudes rap over them with a heavier bassline especially if it was a hit record. Huge difference.
@thelegendarydowntowntonybr2598
@thelegendarydowntowntonybr2598 4 жыл бұрын
bruh, it's a sample... 'jack' is a negative connotation... it was still done well. a lot of producers prior to Premier and RZA also "jacked" older music and made classics out of them. Ever heard 'Aint No Half Steppin", "You Gots To Chill", "The Symphony", etc? Even Premier and RZA have "jacked" before by the definition you're using.
@mr.goodenough3796
@mr.goodenough3796 4 жыл бұрын
Puffy was notorious though, I agree, with basically taking a whole track and only maybe pumping the drum sound up a bit and B.IG. or himself etc rapping over it.. Like takin the Police's Every Breath You Take for I'll Be Missing You ( just one example of many by him). I'm not a fan of that. I can dig blending elements or multiple elements of various songs to create your own thing though.
@Israel-nb7ip
@Israel-nb7ip 4 жыл бұрын
@@thelegendarydowntowntonybr2598 what's your point? It's a jack. So because those earlier artists did some of that it means that it isn't beat jacking? It takes no real talent or skill to do that. Puff was notorious for simply taking a beat whole and doing nothing to it but pay for the sample clearance. The producers I consider to be the most talented and creative, and who push the artform forward, are those that use sampling techniques to build out an original beat made up of different elements and sounds ala Premier, RZA, Bomb Squad, Dre, Alchemist, Pete Rock, etc. What Puff, Irv Gotti, sometimes Trackmasters etc do is just copy and paste. And, yes, I meant it in a somewhat negative way even though I like some where Puff jacked a full song (Cant Hold Me Down, One More Chance remix, Big Poppa, Juicy, etc). But it just got ridiculous in the mid/late 90s where it seems every hit song coming out of Bad Boy was complete beat and hook jack from a popular 80s song.

@grandgnd 4 жыл бұрын
@@thelegendarydowntowntonybr2598 Naaa, there is a difference. Ain No Half Steppin' has ESG - UFO on top of it. That gives it a different tone. The sample Marly used from "Hard To Handle" is only 5 seconds of the song . The rest of the song is different. "You Gotsa Chill" is the closest one to a jack but it still has "Jungle Boogie" cuts and horns here and there.
@grandgnd

All right..so follow my reasoning on this...in regards to you comments on sampling.. It's like someone telling you about a surprise party for you..in advance of the party.. Then you arrive and they yell "surprise"!!! But you already knew about it, so it's still exciting to experience the party ..but because you knew what was coming.. It takes away what could have been a much more intense experience.... Watching your reactions take me back to when hearing these 70s and 80s songs brought out intense feelings of joy ... Especially when something like "stay with me " by Debarge came out...

Hey Just Jammin'! You should check out Chico DeBarge's 1st CD Long Time No See. React to the whole album. You can put that album on with your love and play it all the way through without stopping it. This CD is FIRE 🔥 🔥. You can also put Maxwell's 1st CD Urban Hang Suite and do the same...play it straight through. Both CD's have AWESOME music and lyrics. U said not us old school heads.We hate sampling!!! When my son wanted me listen 2 a song he liked. I 4get what song. But I was like no no that’s the Isley Brothers. He was trying 2 argue me down respectfully. Then I put on the record. He was astonished. He started moving his little body. I schooled him the best I could. I think young people want so bad what’s just there’s & want to be in that position of being legendary without the real work & knowing the root of which they grew. They want instantaneous props. Kids in European countries know about the history of black music than young black Americans. It’s a shame because they are missing out. Props to u 4 your journey through the music I always loved & always will🤗

Hey! What you may want to do is, for whatever throwback rap or r&b song you are going to react to, check first to see if they sampled anyone's music. This way you can still have the chance to hear that original song by reacting to it FIRST, then doing the other artist's song after. God bless.
