I don’t know why they gave Eddie so much flack for this song, it was a perfect party tune 🕺🏾🕺🏾

I actually dug this song and video. Of course Rick James’ production is this song’s real claim to fame, but funnyman Eddie Murphy did his thing here. I wasn’t mad at this and neither were a lot of people who pretended to be, and “In Living Color” dissed everybody.🙃 Eddie was always finding ways to sing anyway and certainly used his clout here. I liked his voice. He also sang in skits a lot earlier on SNL. ☑️ Good for him!☺️👏🏾👏🏾

And let’s not forget that Eddie was later tapped for and gave very good singing performances 🎭 and acted his tail off as an aging 🎤 singing star in the movie Dreamgirls, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.👏🏾👏🏾

Ok I just realized something here... You do know that Prince used to open for Rick right? But Prince was so good it made Rick jealous and he would do nasty things to Prince like steal his instruments and stuff. Eddy and Prince we friends too years later. Here's what just hit me... Girl I cant understand it why you wanna hurt me after all of the things I've done for you I buy you champagne and roses put diamonds on your finger still ya hang out all night... Ah those lyrics remind you a bit of several of Princes songs maybe? One being Why Ya Wanna Treat Me So Bad? Dark? There are a few more that I can think of too. So you tell me was this Ricks way of getting back at Prince or am I reading too much into it? You know how I feel about my baby dont ya? Used to love Rick... still like his songs just not so gung ho on him anymore because of the way he treated my sweetheart though. I have always loved Eddie... not happy with him now either because of his former love and adoration of Elvis now he says lousy things about Elvis too so.... When ya mess with the King and the Prince I stop likin ya both were good men and the best in the business and when your the best people will always be jealous enough to try and shoot you down that speaks volumes on just what you think of your own gifts and talents they, well Ricks gone now but Eddie's still here, he needs to feel more secure in his own gifts and talents cause he's always been good at what he does but he needs to stop throwing shade on Elvis... I wonder if he feels the same way about my Prince too I hope not they were supposed to be good friends. Peace.

this song was taken among my friends and I as more of a joke when it was released- no way did we dance to it. i hope Eddie and Rick thought it was funny and lets see how much money we make since Eddie's career was so hot. capitalize on that momentum

This was during the time Eddie Murphy was hot in Hollywood and apparently thought he could do anything. In one of his stand-up concerts, either "Delirious" or "Raw" he said he told Stevie Wonder he wasn't impressed with singing (like he could do it too). To me this song sounds like he isn't really sure of his voice. I used to DJ so I have this album. Songs on it like "Put Your Mouth on Me" made me think he might be trying to imitate Prince, who he's a fan of. Musically Murphy is much better later on, when he's doing Reggae-vibe stuff, like "Red Light" with Snoop.

Ok, for clarification: this song was a JOKE when it first came out. Nobody took Eddie Murphy seriously as a music artist and the song went nowhere. What can I say - it wasn't right for the time. However, it has aged well and I rather enjoy it now. The only way to explain it is that you had to be there at the time to understand the ridicule heaped on it.
