This song was EXTREMELY popular when it was released by Simon and Garfunkle. The song is what made them popular. Everyone was singing it as well as attending their concert performances.

Agreed. The other thing that is pretty hard for people nowadays to understand is how absolutely revolutionary it was for Mike Nichols to use their music in his film "The Graduate", helping the soundtrack to become a best seller. I did not see the movie until it was shown on network television, and the minute the song started underneath the opening credits (I confess, I miss opening credits in today's movies, they DID serve a purpose) I understood how it's bleak message helped to explain Benjamin's confusion and feeling of isolation.

Yeah, Jen, big miss on that one, not surprising, before your time, but this song was HUGE for YEARS after it first came out. Part of the soundtrack of my youth, the heartbreak of the late 60's, all that hope and promise dying in the cold harsh reality of the 70s. If that makes any sense to anyone, I'd be surprised...

Yup. It was hugely successful when it first came out. Yet, the disturbed version is great and so is this.

He always has to "trash" his voice to do the lowest subharmonics. It's a method of inducing light trauma, so that the lower notes are more accessible. Geoff knows enough about his instrument to not do anything that would permanently damage it. And it's 100% just him.
@patriciaschuman4205

Agreed. I think Geoff's main complaint with Valhalla was those protracted sections which Layne gave him to be continually singing in the absolute bottom of his range struck him as being not particularly musical.

He just released "Man Of Constant Sorrow". He plays guitar in his new one, kinda. It was B0 he dropped in Vahala Calling. It's always only Geoff. Peter Barber is an opera singer and part of the Bass Bang. Check out his how-to sing low tutorials and how to hurt yourself just enough to hit those low notes. He calls it light trama.

I understand what you mean. I feel the music too. My mother was piano teacher and my sister was music major (pipe organ). My parents rented an organ in summer so my sister could practice while school was out. I was born late in life, so my sister was 17 when I was born. When I heard her practicing when I was 2-4 yo, I'd go sit on our wooden floor with my back against the organ. Mama would ask what I was doing and I'd simply say, "feeling music." I loved how the notes sent out different vibrations. Mama thought I was in my sister's way and try to make me leave and I'd cry. My sister let me stay .❤

The low note he hit in Valhalla Calling Me was a B-0 (B zero). All the voices in the piece are Geoff.

As others have said, Geoff didn't hurt his voice other than what he had to do intentionally and carefully to hit those notes. And you can blame Layne (VP's beatboxer) for that as he arranged Valhalla Calling. Geoff has said he doesn't think the super low notes are pleasing to listen to, especially like in Valhalla Calling where he's so deep for so long. You'll notice in his own songs while he goes deep he does much more sparingly usually. And yes, all he backing vocals are Geoff, and he does all the arranging and instrumentation too.

About one year ago, you reacted to his version of "Far over the Misty Mountains cold" from "The Hobbit - An unexpected journey". About 10 days ago he released the sequel to that, "I see fire", from the second movie of the trilogy, "The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug". I really think you'll LOVE it. 🙂 That said, I enjoyed your reaction. Your expressions told the whole story 🙂. Someone wrote, in response to another reaction, that: "The original was like "Should we worry about this?" Pentatonix was about "We can still fix this, if we work together" Disturbed was like "You were warned, didn't listen, and NOW YOU MUST PAY!" Geoff is like "I'm so, so sorry..." It makes a whole lot of sense to me. 🙂 See you next time!

Hello, @Just Jen your simplicity and honesty make you transmit positive energy to the acapella groups and Geoff Castelluci. You know how to find the words that go well with your emotions. That's why I know I'm going to find your reactions. I'm not someone who listens to a lot of music. But when you react to VoicePlay or Geoff Castelluci, I'm there.

Awesome reaction Jen. That is all Geoff singing. Last video of Geoff's is Man of Constant Sorrow. Voiceplay last video is Valhalla Calling. Music is also very therapeutic for me too. These guys brighten my days no matter my mood. Also helps me go to sleep with a clearer mind and more restful and deeper. Before Voiceplay and Geoff it took me longer to fall asleep. And then I was restless and woke often. I do that as well when I don't fall asleep listening to them or Geoff. My grandkids gave me sleep headphones and regular headphones for Christmas. And I use them both every single day.

I heard it described really well. The OG was the warning, Disturbed's version was the anger, PTX cover is the pleading and Geoff's version is the sadness and reflection afterwards. Every time I listen to this cover, I cry. It touches my soul, and I feel like a am seeing the light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Absolutely amazing cover. Great reaction!!

Jen Geoff stated during his episode of his channel, he was instructing on how to sing low bass notes even subharmonics notes without straining or hurting vocal cords. I guess he strained his vocal cords. I think that Geoff stopped singing for a while and use some remedies like one treats sore throat. I think that Geoff will be back.

Start this song low when you sing it. Same with El Condor Pasa, a Peruvian classic folk song, Better wishful than dissful! Singing takes lots and lots of practice to develop muscles and muscle memory. Music takes the mind away... Musical literacy: circle of fifths. Carol Kaye videos highly recommended. She is a musical genius AND a fab teacher. Harmony gives me whole body pleasure. Great sound Jen!!!
