Absolutely. I am putting gentle reminders in other reactions...

This is a great band, they were formed in 1984, they have many great tracks, the ones which I suggest are: "Last Exit for The Lost", "Dawnrazor", "For Her Light", "Psychonaut". There are many other tracks but these are good ones to continue with.

The first words spoken in the song are “Poenitentiam agite!” (Latin: Repent!). They are from the film “The Name Of The Rose” based on the novel "Il Noma della Rosa" by Umberto Eco. The monk Salvatore, played by Ron Perlman, voices them. The saying originally is the titel of the first of Martin Luther's ninety-five theses, but in the film context it is the fighting word of a secret lodge (to which Salvatore belongs) that wants to overthrow the Catholic Church.

Never knew that I've always wondered what that was thank you!

I knew about the Name of the rose samples (used throughout the album) and read the book but had no idea about Luther using it. I thought it was a way for Dulcinians to recognize each other. Interesting, thanks for the info.

Love it. You could do a different Nephilim track every night, and I would never be bored.... more please!!! Carl McCoy is the vocalist...

Same, I never thought there would be a reaction to it though lol, it just came up in my recommendations.

"En - demoni - ada" (prefix - noun - suffix). It exists in Portuguese, and it means (she is) "posessed by the demon".

The is great, thanks. The samples you hear in this song are from the film The Name of the Rose based on the book by Umberto Eco. I'm trying to read Foucault's Pendulum at the moment. Fuck me is it hard going.

If you do "Last Exit for the Lost" you'll find an incredible, gradual tempo change towards the end. They pull that off live!!

I find the vocals mystical and addictive. but it takes a while.

Perfect intro: starts with pure atmosphere, transitions to atmospheric guitars telling you a story before kicking into the song. Maybe a weird structure when played on its own but the two intros also serve as the album intro. The album is nearly perfect, by the way. Still, I support what others say: Elizium is something everyone should experience. Go for it, and when you do, do listen to the first three (four depending on how you count) songs in one go. Same thing for the last two songs. Its that kind of album: Pink Floyd's missing album had they read Dante's Inferno for inspiration (well, more like Crowley or Zoroaster but I liked my sentence better with Dante) and had Gilmore and Waters both caught colds. Anyways, enjoy it when you have time (and check who the producer is).

The beginning of the track and the "penetenzeagete", is taken from the film Name of the Rose, where the hunchback is talking about some older religious order.

Carl McCoy said he injured his throat as a kid, and that's why he sings so raspy.

for me this album is the Dark side of the moon of goth,with the follow up(Elizium) their Wish you were here,less keen on the releases after this from Nefilim,Zoon Et al,but these two albums are amongst my faves of all time.

Hi JP. DP from UK. Great reactions, Time After Time. This one's new to me too (although I know the band name). Love the atmospheric start and the use of slide guitar. Vocals pretty gruff, but they work for me. I want to hear more. P.S. my song ref Time After Time is by Miles Davis (that's the version I have).

I still think he's saying "if you want a display you'll LEARN that way". Not only is that what my ears hear but it also makes more sense lyrically. I think that a lot of their lyric transcriptions were done by ear and are not proper transcriptions of the actual written/recorded lyrics. There are other songs where the lyrics that I looked up do not seem to be what I believe he's actually saying.

It’s interesting to hear ppl try to interpret the lyrics of these songs into a story like form but it doesn’t fit. Carls way of writing is pretty unique and best understood as if the lyrics are being sung directly to you. This isn’t music or lyrics to be interpreted. They are more like a revelation being given to the hearer. It’s for “those with ears to hear and eyes to see, truths from above prepared.” The lyrics leave little to interpretation rather the message is directly sent.

You know I I've always liked the nephilim since the 80s but its only now i realise its just a follow on from 70s uk prog rock

Since you are reacting to music out of the prog tag I really encourage you to listen to a stoner rock band with high doses of vistuosism and psychodelia: Colour Haze. My favourite songs are ZEN, Aquamaria, Sundazed and She said.

Elizium is a better album than The Nephilim in my opinion. You should definitely listen to it. There's some dull moments in this album The Nephilim in my opinion. Never liked this track too much. Pretty cool atmosphere though. Edit: actually never mind. Coming back to it after more than a decade of not listening to Fields of the Nephilim Endemoniada is pretty cool. The drumming is something special.

Listen to "Trees Come Down", "For Her Light", "Mourning Sun", or "Celebrate" and you might think all of these songs (especially "Celebrate") were sung by a different person. For me Carl's voice always works because it fits the atmosphere and "mythos" of the band, and more importantly because I can generally understand him (give or take a word here and there).

Though a fan I'm not crazy about this one. There's some good sections but ultimately, for me, it lacks cohesion. That first 90 sec's, I get the intent, the build up, but I just find it a little unnecessary. Then the next two parts, though fine in their own right, I don't think they meld well, and find the transition a little stark. Ok but not great.
@pentagrammaton67939 ай бұрын
They sure used a lot of space and mood changes on their 2nd and 3rd albums. I tend to like it, but if not in a reflective and passive mood, I tend to go for different goth bands.
@kenl20919 ай бұрын
Quite enjoyed it until the vocals came in and I was reminded that I was listening to Fields of the Nephilim. Goth isn't the worst rock genre out there but it is struggling to avoid relegation from the Championship.
