I agree the original release is a killer. The Virgin CD re-issue with two bonus tracks isn't so good. The inclusion of Golden Hours and Fat Lady, which are very flat and lifeless (Great on the studio albums), spoil the flow of the album.

King Crimson was my favorite band as an adolescent. That being said, I always felt my favorite Robert Fripp performances were his guitar solos on the Eno rock albums. Fripp told Eno he was dissatisfied with a particular note he played in that solo and wanted to record again, but Eno said, "No, it's perfect." Great reaction to this, JP. I loved this so much when I first heard it (still do, of course), that I learned to play it on my guitar, just to give it the Frippesque type treatment, since there's so much room for improv. I love Eno's approach to the creative process too.

So about the guitar solo. Notice the left and right pans of the secondary guitar tracks somewhat muted with variables in speed. That's the rudiments of frippertronics . Multiple tracks of same slice of sound at different times and speed. Check out no pussyfooting 1st fripp eno collaboration.

Thanks for the review. A great and memorable track. I enjoy the way you mention the inherent chaos, not only in this song, but in Eno's general approach at this time. I think it is particularly relevant to the guitar solo, which is one of the reasons I also like the chaotic type solos of people like Syd Barrett and Andy Gill. I look forward to sharing the next track with you. 😎😎

When first released his Post-ROXY new world was so dissonantly fascinating, robotically edgy & free of any current music trends. Knee deep into PROG at the time, I could play ENO and completely escape into a whole other progressive unusual unexplored realm. FRIPP absolutely did some of his MOST beautiful & amazing original guitar work with other musicians. He and Manzanera had similar approaches yet they were wonderfully different. ENO only got better and more imaginative & tribal on his next several masterstrokes BEFORE & AFTER SCIENCE and ANOTHER GREEN WORLD and collaborations as he seamlessly drifted into his gorgeous Ambient period.

Given your comments about Eno's interest in chaos you may wish to look into The Portsmouth Sinfonia, a group whose players were non-musicians or playing an instrument other than one in which they were trained. The only rules were that everyone had to come for rehearsals and that people should try their best to get it right and not intentionally try to play badly. Eno played clarinet in the group and produced their first two albums.

A lot of Eno's music was used in the movie "Velvet Goldmine" This song in particular is great - it's used in a concert setting where the star, Brian Slade (who is modeled on David Bowie) simulates oral s** on Kurt Wild's (based on Iggy Pop/Lou Reed) guitar. Fripp at his finest on guitar. Amazing how Fripp and Eno could create such brilliant cacophony and also provide us with serene gems like "Wind on Water".
