Used to buy more than my fair share of hi-fi equipment , and this LP was tucked under my arm, along with Floyd's WYWH , and one or two others. The bass playing is a master class when it kicks in. A few JT converts were made demo-ing various combinations of turntables, amps, speakers. Raised eyebrows all-round. Great memories. Baker St muse please.

A controversial thing to say, but I never used to like this album much and always wondered what the fuss was about. But when I got the Steve Wilson remaster I suddenly found my ears opening to all sorts of things to appreciate. It turns out that my original copy, which was the first CD edition, was produced from a terrible master. Most of the initial CD versions of Tull albums suffered badly and sounded much worse than the original vinyl editions. Anderson was rather irked by the poor quality of the original CD reissues. The album was recorded on their newly acquired mobile studio which was specially made so that they could record album material between gigs on tour. The studio was set up on a stage in a hall in a hotel in Monte Carlo, literally minstrels in a gallery. This is why they named the album thus, and may also be why Ian has a bit of chat between songs as if the were in front of a live audience, even though they weren’t.

Great track off a great album (not quite up to the standard of Heavy Horses, but still great, and nicely balanced in approach between individual songs and their full concept albums). Rolling Stone magazine described the album as "unadulterated Elizabethan boogie", which fits it well. Oh, and if it's cold in there, perhaps putting on something more than a t-shirt would help! :)

The thematic link on this album is a kind of baroque rock music. Ian was probably at his peak as a singer in 1975 and Tull was still the greatest live rock act in the world. So, they were right at the top of their game in a lot of ways. Some more great Tull songs: Hunting Girl (great drumming once again by Barlow), Flying Colours, Seal Driver, Something's on the Move, Black Sunday, Rover (also playfully energetic), etc. All ripper songs. It's been said that the short song Slipstream off the Aqualung album is about slipping into the afterlife as well.

I'm glad you recognize Barry Barlow's drumming. He's one of the best and most overlooked drummers. He's part of a group of drummers I can only describe as "clever". Not overly fast or flashy, but damn creative with the fills. Clever. Along with Barry are BJ Wilson from Procol Harum and Gerry Conway from Cat Stevens band (if you've never heard 'Whistlestar' by Cat Stevens, you've got to check it out for the amazing drum and bass work).

It was more of an environment than a concept really, but you've guessed it. They've recorded this album in a room which had a gallery; Ian was sitting up there with his acoustic guitar looking down at the other guys. And even though it is a full blown rock album, maybe even their heaviest, it's always Ian and his acoustic that is in command. Plus this is probably their most poetic album.

Barlow was "with" the band for quite a long time before actually taking over. Many don't realize Clive Bunker never held back the fact his focus was to marry a good woman and as soon as he finds that person he was out of there. I believe he found her during the making of the Aqualung LP and he knew the tour would be far too long, so he bowed out with Barlow seamlessly taking the reins...

Justin, you haven't fully acknowledged one thing: the string quartet arranged by David Palmer, who at this point wasn't a full member of the band yet. You have already listened to many Tull songs, but it's probably the first in which you hear it in its full glory. There were some string arrangements on Aqualung, but these were cameos rather than such a full blown thing as here. And there will be much more of these - the string quartet appears in most of the songs on the albums from Warchild to Stormwatch. With only one exception being... Songs From The Wood ;)

Ok the reason Barry is the best drummer is- Most people just like Ginger Baker said many times can not tell who or why drummer is better then another, do when Bonham or Bruford or the dude in Rush play a solo. do you really know what's going on beside the fact they are playing fast? Can you really remember parts of as fast drummer solo 10 minutes after you see it to even try to think who is the better drummer? Well Barry has speed BUT as he said many times "I try to play drums like a guitar, riffs like Day tripper and Smoke covered Water, drums beats and riff you can remember and fit the song-

I don't think it's a concept - though he repeats Minstrel in the Gallery in the centerpiece, Baker Street Muse. I always thought of it as sort of Ian Anderson's first solo album (the large amount of acoustic parts) with the band moments almost an afterthought. OK, not an afterthought, but i can hear Cold Wind as a full-folk piece in the Songs From The Woods mold, without electric guitar and just percussions, guitar, strings and Ian's wonderful vocals.

Funny that you asked if it was a concept album. Aqualung was called a concept album by one review and they didn't care for that. So they made Thick as a Brick. One song broken into side a and b with the cover art a bunch of stories made up like a newspaper. It was a red herring because there wasn't a concept. Tull didn't like getting niched.

Here is for me, the most successful piece of Minstrel in the Gallery ! We find there, as on some of the other pieces of the album, an acoustic part which succeeds the electric one, with fiery string arrangements and invigorating guitar and drum parts. The difference in "Cold Wind to Valhalla" is that the composition goes to the essential in four minutes where the title track unnecessarily stretched over eight with multiple superfluous repetitions or in other long pieces such as "Black Satin Dancer" as well as "Baker St. Muse" which have different parts without much relation to each other, and do not necessarily fit together harmoniously. With "Cold Wind to Valhalla" everything works and fits together perfectly ! Great track.

@@Katehowe3010 As you know, for me it's just the opposite ! APP is a well-structured and organized whole while in my opinion most parts of MITG are assembled a bit haphazardly. For example on the epic "Baker St Muse", taken separately some of the passages are successful, but as a long suite, I find this one poorly constructed. But hey, we won't agree on that anyway and that's okay because it doesn't stop you from enjoying Minstrel in the Gallery, and me from enjoying A Passion Play !

I've long thought of this song as a great example of progressive rock songs not needing to be of epic length. Every part here is great; special shout out to the string parts which really add to the tension in the loud part of the song. Ironically, in decades of listening to this song, I've never given much thought to the meaning of the lyrics until they were brought up in this review, even though I've long ago memorized most of them.

Jason - It's great to see you really enjoying this offering from Jethro Tull. BUT - @ChristianAdams and I have been having a discussion and we think that you need to give Ian Andersons' lyrical and musical muse another reaction. A certain ROY HARPER. I know that you have given "The Game" a reaction and I'm pretty sure that you enjoyed it. SO: For one of your forays into "Long Song Saturday" can I please suggest that you give "One of These Days In England - Parts 2 to 10" a reaction.... PLEASE. IT's only 19 minutes long honest. Side one of this album is excellent. Side two is doubly excellent. Ian is in excellent voice, and the band is tight and focused, as is the songwriting. When I got my first CD player, in 1984, this was one of the first three CDs I bought. (The others were the debut Kansas album, and “Aerial Boundaries” by Michael Hedges. 🙂)

Crazy song, the way it's constructed, Ian's guitar playing and singing, John Glascock's bass guitar, Barriemore Barlow's drum work... Oh and I almost forgot Martin Barre's wailing guitar, just fire 🔥

Did you finish the XTC record? I have been keeping an eye out, but sometimes I miss episodes. Just checking if you have I will go back and check out the reviews. Pink Thing, and Chaulkhills and Children are masterpiece writings.

I still think Anderson is the best acoustic guitarist I've heard. His intonation and creativity is impeccable. A far reach for ALL those others out there. So glad you decided to carry-on with this. Baker Street Muse awaits. I hope you decide to check-out War Child at some point. Some great stuff on that one too!

Ian Anderson has been one of my guitar heroes ever since the "Life's a Long Song" EP. This song really shows him off.

Time, via School of Rock, has turned these unfamiliar tunes into almost parody. Stand Up turned my head, via your channel, as i had no idea they sounded anti- folk before they turned into heavy folk rock . I preferred Fatima Mansions’ Valhalla Avenue but I’m sure time will turn even that into an unhip tip , such is the fickle fashion of musical trends- or maybe that boat sailed by in 2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣2️⃣🧶 Yep i have Time on my hands. Better clear the veg patch x
