One of the greatest hard rock songs ever. Yes, Ian Paice is one of the GIANTS! So much fun watching you get knocked out by this performance. Oh Lord, that Lord!
@Silber7

You could basically take out Ian Paice's drum track and perform it as a drum solo. This was the first album Deep Purple did with singers David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes (also on bass, higher voice) instead of Ian Gillan - a bit of a shift in style. Also first introducing these fantasy lyrics... But Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord on guitar and organ at the hight of their powers - rythm, lead in improvisation and semi-classical arrangements... Such a relentless track, and one of their best for sure

Remember, new bassist, Glenn Hughes, also did lead vocals on this album. On the song "Burn", he sings the two choruses. I believe this is the first album Jon Lord used synthesizers on. The closing song, "A" 200", is basically him showing off what he'd been learning on his new found toy. Man, I bought this in 8-track when it came out. At the time I was a sophmore in high school, playing trumpet and drums in the high school band. But when I first popped this tape into my player and Ian Paice's drumming jumped out of the speakers and assailed my ears, I knew that the trumpet was gonna be taking a back seat to drumming. Almost fifty years later and it still holds true. I still toot the horn every now and then, but drumming will always be my number one musical passion, thanks to Mr. Paice. Great song, great album. I would recommend "Sail Away" next. Or maybe "Mistreated". Both are top shelf DP tunes.

J.P. be nimble, J.P. be quick, add some fire, and light the wick. Monday morning drum up some heat, put on Deep Purple, and play and repeat. Lord! Those keyboards are all over the place, One Ian singing, and one Ian drumming at a furious Paice! Then you have Glover holding down the bass, and Ritchie slinging a guitar that will melt your face! I would feel like a worm if I don't thank you for this 'Burn', hope my little poetic trick won't leave you feeling sick, Sometimes I know it can be a little thick, so I will stop now and not be a duck(?). Oh well, Peace.

In the summer of '79 I was 15 and attended the opening of the Powerhouse Heavy Metal Roadshow at The Stonehouse in Hatfield,Hertfordshire (no longer there).Basically, a rock music disco where you could meet girls and listen to great music.It went on for years (Thx Steve and Norm) at various venues but on that opening night, Jon Lord and Bernie Marsden attended (now in Whitesnake). I just remember Bernie was quite short and smiling the whole time, Jon Lord was tall and we had a quick chat.I can't remember what I said but he was so nice, very encouraging and when he left out the back door ,where his gold Rolls Royce was parked, I just thought 'What a great guy!' and ,although he wasn't particularly a hero of mine before, he certainly was after that..RIP John...

David Coverdale was the lead singer of an 80’s hair metal band called Whitesnake. The 80’s were my decade and the band I was in could imitate Whitesnake really well. There isn’t much from that genre that I still like but “Still of the Night” by Whitesnake is one of the exceptions. It has a contrasting middle section which keeps it interesting.

Finally getting to this, LOVE your comments, Justin. You basically echo my feelings about this song! Your good taste is quite evident here. Glad you got to enjoy Ian Paice's work. This song is significant for me because it was THE song that led me to go out and buy my first ever album, at age 14. And later that year see them as my first rock concert (Dio in Elf was the opener, :-)) . It just has so many good, various elements in it. Maybe the best hard rock song ever? And you, sir, are absolutely correct, and I'm super-impressed that you made this observation, that it was breaking new ground and their incorporation of classical music, the way they did it in this song has reverberated through the last 5 decades...thanks for this. For more outstanding Ian Paice drumming on this very album I suggest "Lay Down, Stay Down". And a really cool song on this album is "Sail Away" -- I love it. "You Fool No One" also excellent. Deep Purple were the genesis of many of the "Metal" genres that we now enjoy - back in the day they were (and still are) just a progressive hard rock band - where progressive in the late 60s early 70s I guess meant "experimental". Their whole sound was based more on a fusion of classical-jazz-rock'n'roll whereas Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath had more of a blues base. Jon Lord retired from the band to write "classical orchestral music" - they had already experimented with the Concerto for Group and Orchestra - they were innovators ... like a lot of the bands from that time.

Love Ian Gillan so when this came out I was shocked that he and RG were replaced and didn't really like Burn. At first. Over the years it grew on me. The California Jam performance redeemed them for me a good bit. Kinda like the Rabin era Yes it was a big change. But that's what growth is all about!

A very divisive album when this came out. The new lineup with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes turned off a lot fans and critics. I think this is the best album that Mark III lineup did. Granted they only did one more album, which I think is pretty decent as well though not as great as Burn. The rest of the album is fantastic, especially Just Might Take Your Life, Sail Away and Mistreated.

Deep Purple leave bands like Kiss in the dust. I don't think of Kiss as hair band, but hard rock. Purple is hard rock with LOTS of different influences. They're knowledge of classical, jazz, etc. is what adds a depth to their music. Just like Zeppelin and not enough other bands.

Purple was and is my favorite band. But my first concert was kiss . Yeah they were more basic rock but they were good. A great concert lots of energy back then.

Good song for a cool down chill out session! 🤣🤣🤣 Who cares what the personnel are, it’s a great rock tune by one of the fathers of heavy metal. Paice is one of the GOATS. 🐐

Love Coverdale's vocals always, but Jon Lord's input on this is up there with his best IMO. Great stuff, thanks JP. 🤩

The solo isn't hair metal though and I think that is what makes this song better than hair metal. 1974 is kind of an odd year as I spent most of it travelling so it was mostly a blank other than what I would hear on AM radio when I was in Vancouver (I heard nothing in Europe and North Africa). Songs released then filtered into my consciousness after the fact. Deep Purple was a band I thought of as from "Hush" and "Smoke on the water". I would need to listen to this more but I think it would definitely be a grower. If you are looking at the early roots of metal, you need to listen to Dust's "Hard Attack" album. "Pull Away/So many time" or "Ivory" or "Suicide". Their drummer later renamed himself and became Marky Ramone.

Hi there! How about a reaction to the man Deep Purple wanted to replace Ritchie Blackmore? That would be none other than the Irish firebrand Rory Gallagher! Check out : "A Million Miles Away" from Irish Tour '74, "Philby" from Top Priority, "Bullfrog Blues" from Live in Europe, or "Moonchild" from Calling Card as a place to start. He was voted the #1 musician by Melody Maker in 1971, beating out Clapton and Page at the time. Slash, Brian May and the Edge all were influenced by him and all sing his praises, as does Alex Lifeson. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 47 in 1995, but he has left a rich legacy of blues & rock to be enjoyed.
