A song written by the great Hoyt Axton. The song differentiates between "the dealer", who mainly sells weed and other softer drugs, and "the pusher", a seller of harder and more dangerous drugs. It's only the pusher that's being condemned here.

One of Steppenwolf's best songs IMO. I haven't listened to this song in a while. So nice to hear this again.

Steppenwolf was great. One of the songs of my childhood. Hoyt Axton was great, as well. Now I have to find his version. I learned something today. Happy New Year!

Back in the late 70's my friends and I were surfing near the Hunting Beach pier in So Cal and across Pacific Coast Highway there was a little club, no more than a glorified bar, called The Golden Bear. On the marquee it said Steppenwolf Tonight so we bought tickets...came back later and walked in...around the stage there were seat, like a stripper bar lol, with sings that said Reserved....we removed the signs and sat down...server came over and told us that the seats are reserved...my friend said "Yea we reserved them last week" server says Oh OK...we sat less than five feet from the band...even got a handshake from John Kay!

@@raynavarro7997 Saw. Few shows at the Golden Bear back in the 70’s and 80’s. Great iconic venue!

"God damn the pusher man!" Now I know where that random phrase comes from! Been in my head for decades, but I don't think I've ever heard this song. Thank you!!

Ooh! This is a song I had forgotten, sublime! That lead guitar tone, very like early John Lees from Barclay James Harvest! Lovely!

Hoyt Axton had his own version that's kind of freaky too. In case you don't know Hoyt ,also an actor , played the father in Gremlins who brings them home which starts all the craziness.

Monster, Don't Step on the Grass Sam, Magic Carpet Ride, Rock Me... lots of great songs they did in the end 60s. This one is used for the movie Easy Rider as was Born to Be Wild. Nina Simone did a soul version of it a few years later. But actually the song is not even by them but written in the early 60s.

You should definitely hit "Monster." It hurts, in that it's one of those songs we damn well should have learned from by now And Yet Here We Are, but it's very good.

Try "Heroin" by Velvet Underground. Hoyt Axton was an interesting character. He had a decent movie career such as Gremilins, Black Stallion. Also, did some writing for Three Dog Night.

Gads! I was twelve & an ignoramous. Christians didn't much take to that particular song is the first thing I remember, it was all about 'Born To Be Wild' from the same album but eventually the whole 'G.D The Pusher' thing eventually blew into town. 1967 was basically the early dawn of recording better & better dynamics, it took George Martin of the Beatles fame to drag the entire recording industry into 'real' stereophonic reproduction. It was around before 67, but struggling to image a soundstage correctly. Thanx, it was a fair amount for a 12yo to take on but we had little choice then.

Think about a 12yo being exposed to the likes of Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane as well as Steppenwolf. Kerplunk! Mind blown at 12

It was a good song, but my favourite "pusher song" is *Sugar Man* by the now late, great *Sixto Rodriguez* , which is full of sounds ahead of its time by years, and tells its story "from the inside" by the addict, with more love than loathing for the stuff that's killing him. Beautiful magic hollowing out someone's life. Two sides of the same sinking coin. (Sorry. Had to try for a "poetic sound", there, to go along with the lyrics - which you could put in a book and just publish that way, as is.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2qTkJSCbZxjl9E
