Such a great song. I heard it first on late night radio in the UK - it had just come out - and immediately took a sick day the next day to go to Rough Trade Records in Notting Hill to get a copy. Played it to death.

There's nothing quite like the young, raw Björk. I mean, this song isn't just sonically unusual (it sounds drunk and dizzy) but the lyrics are, frankly, somewhat disturbing. On the surface, it just sounds like the words of an innocent child, lost in a playful mind. But every so often, they throw in vaguely sexual imagery, which makes me wonder if the song isn't describing the wandering mind of a child so much as a blossoming Lolita? Whatever the case may be, it's a unique and brilliant song. Very evocative and spine-chilling. Who needs a chorus!

Björk's singing is just about as illegible to us Icelanders. All of her Is are E-s. She wonderfully butchers Icelandic folksongs on the legendary underground album Gling-Gló. I highly recommend it.

The bass in this is uncopyable. I’ve never heard anything like it since the first time I heard it on my local college radio station. I love how the groove never wavers and there’s no real chorus to speak of. One of the most unique songs I’ve ever heard. And that voice.
@AquaticStarchild
@AquaticStarchild Жыл бұрын
This is Bragi Olafsson on the bass, he's one of Iceland's most respected bass players along with the guys from Mezzoforte, their song Garden Party was a UK/EU hit in the 80's and as a total surprise in E-Asia too. They told this story of being booked to a Jazz festival in Malaysia where they had literally no record sales to speak of. When they turn up they realize they are the headlining act and everybody knew their music off of the bootleg market.

Excellent choice JP. The first time I heard this song was on Saturday Night Live in 1988. I'm a prog rocker stuck in a mid 60s and 70s time warp, but this song was excellent. Bjork's voice was something else. I'm lucky that I got to see and hear it live the first time because what they can do on stage sets bands apart for me. There was a TV show called Flash Forward with the song It's Oh So Quiet by Bjork.

Hi Justin! We finally sent you the e-mail we had promised you a few weeks ago; looks as if it was the perfect birthday present for you. Contents are Barbara Dennerlein, Friedrich Gulda, Barbara Thompson (who sadly died Jul 9th; she was one of our favorite musicians. She was a superb sax and flute player and had bravely fought against Parkinson's disease for 25 years. We suggest you do a special reaction to her in her honor) and Mother Gong. We hope you will like it. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Justin! Best regards Jeanine and Friederike

Does my Gen X heart so much good to see this song being appreciated! I remember in the 90s a local alt radio station had this song in their rotation, and every time they played it the DJ would preface it with statements like, "I just don't get the appeal, but here ya have it". I'm still a little bitter about that... lol. Thanks for your close listening and thoughtful reactions!

Hi JP. DP from UK. Many Happy Returns. At my age, a birthday is just Another Day! Won't say no to some cake though. This is the side to Bjork that I like - atmospheric and a bit bonkers. Great song too. Typically strange lyrics; despite her explanation you read out, I think it's still slightly creepy. P.S. my song ref Another Day is by Paul McCartney. Dream Theater too.

Overall, a really mellow song. A nice backing/rhythm track, not overly complicated, with Bjorks lovely vocal making it and driving it along. Re that rhythm track, love the heavy bass sound, drums too. Not sure about the uniqueness though (Azabaxe80), reminds me of some of the more esoteric 'Madchester' stuff. In particular, A Certain Ration. Still a top tune for all that.

Happy Birthday brah! Definitely, more swingy than I expected, her vocal textures were unique. Good to finally hear a SCs album, I’ve seen the band here and there years ago on tv but, seemed less like what I heard just now. Also saw an earlier band where she’s a very young girl… Girl’s been singing a long time. Have a great day, make real that imaginary cake and BBQ. Yum.

Happy birthday! Not all the songs on the album are as smoothly gentle, but there's definitely a lot to explore. More great songs from this album are "Deus", "Motorcrash" and "Fxxking in Rhythm and Sorrow" (some with the dubious pleasure of Einar's added vocals). When this album came out it was like nothing anyone had played before - quite a revelation. The trumpet always reminds me of long-time Brian Eno collaborator Jon Hassell's work.

Glad you got to this one. Anyone serious about music should realise that this song is a step above the usual pop morass and introduces an unusual talent who takes melodies where no-one expects them to go. Meanwhile, who else misheard the lyrics as 'they're smoking seagulls' and thought 'Yup, Icelandic, I can imagine that.' ? Now treat yourself with The Beatles' Birthday. Always good fun.

Happy Birthday JP!! The album is outstanding. I saw them in concert in Dublin in the 80's. They were a great band and were well able to rock in a new wave way. The impish figure of Bjork on stage with that voice absolutely created so much presence. Bjork was a bit of a child prodigy having already gained a reputation in Iceland before the Sugercubes

Happy Birthday, Justin! Loved me some Sugarcubes back in the day... they kind of seemed like an Icelandic B-52s to me, the contrast between the male and female vocals, the fun party atmosphere, etc. This is not one of my favorite tracks of theirs, probably wouldn't even be on a 'best of' compilation I'd curate, but it's aiight. Tracks I'd suggest checking out include Blue-Eyed Pop, Pump, Hit, Water, Planet.. (they come from the era of the single word song title, obviously).

Happy Birthday Justin and thanks again for your great reaction videos, my favourite ones in YT as you listen THEN comment, always in a very relevant and interesting ways. You should listen to this whole debut-album as it's very nice and interesting (the Sugarcubes other albums were not as good as "Life's too Good" in my opinion). By the way, Björk is not the only singer in the Sugarcubes, but, of course, she was the one everybody would notice quite obviously in this band (which was not her first band). There are some B52's influences in this album and Lene Lovich too ("Sick for Toys"). I still enjoy this album very much.

You might wait three years - you might go ten, but every now and then again somebody pops up, and as a musician, your phone starts ringing. Everyone is scrambling to point everyone to someone who has just emerged. There was no MTV in those days, no KZbin, but everyone is calling everyone saying ‘you’ve got to hear this'. I don’t even think the band had even released a record, they just showed this song and Deus on UK TV in an evening news show and everyone leapt on it. I think the previous time it had been Kate Bush - again appearing on an evening 'magazine/news show' - when Kate appeared on that, is when everybody started ringing like crazy - David Gilmore saw it and rushed off to work with her. The sky recent time this happened was Olivia Rodrigo with Drivers Licence. - but nowadays we have KZbin , Facebook etc. and everybody was sending each other links to this new musician

Appropriately, there is both ice and fire in their sound, and in her voice, of course. I do hear the Cocteau Twins vibe, and Portishead, but with a strangely upbeat optimism that is all her own. She is a unique artist. Her album Utopia, which is based on bird song, is amazing too. Happy Birthday!

A good opportunity to bring us this song, Justin. Bjork started with a band called Tappi Tikarrass (one album, two eps, if I remember; some songs on the album have a good post-punk sound, maybe worth a listen) and then another one called Kukl (two albums, a more chaotic savage and exotic post-punk sound). Then this band. This song has a Icelandic version too, which I prefer. Her voice is more free on that one. Which we all can understand.

I like the sound. Reminds me a bit of the jam during the last workshop I watched yesterday. PIQSIQ, Sudan Archives and TEKE: TEKE: basically jammed for the entire 90 minutes. Wow! Halfway through one of the singers said they should tour together because they were having so much fun. PIQSIQ are a pair of throat singers. Sudan Archives is R&B and experimental electronic music. TEKE: TEKE: is a Montreal based Japanese Pysch-Rock group (they were missing two members though). I suspect the result would be called shoe-gazing or something like that but I really could see it going over well with folks who like the smokes to be cannabis based with a side of purple haze. A band called LADAMA was part of the previous, also good, workshop. One of it's members was from Columbia. I remembered you and Natasha when they mentioned that. edited a second time to say, oh ya, happy birthday!
