This was initially my favourite song, and we all had to learn that bass line, and Steve has cool riffs too. Don’t neglect Geoff’s keys with those tasty arpeggios. In the video it’s Geoff doing the synth vocals. It’s clever to use “Yes” as the hook. If you’re looking for votes, mine is to do 90125 before going back, because it completes the transition to the modern era for the band. That flow is important.

Best song on the album for me, so much energy, the band is firing on all pistons, a total rush. I knew you'd love the bass playing, such a standout here. Howe's guitar runs are excellent as are the keyboards. And that flurry of vocals propels the song, especially with the repeated use of "Yes", it should have been the band's theme song. But of course when Anderson returned to the fold he refused to play any songs from this album in concert. I'd love to see you react to their first 2 albums. Another that I like a lot is the "Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe" album which technically isn't a Yes album but sounds a lot more like classic Yes than their next 2 albums do.

This song is almost like a wink and a nod to the Fragile era, which seems appropriate because this really represented the end of their golden age, I think they thought this might be the end. Funny how each one gets it in different ways.. In my perception this song (of course, because oif the bass), sounds much like "On the Silent Wings of Freedom", from "Tormato" album, maybe because of the rhythmic division on the bass lines and sound texture.
@markjohnson42174 жыл бұрын
@@crazyyyyhorse Yes absolutely, the bassline has a very similar rapid arpeggiating figure as "Silent Wings", but this song overall reminds me of the kind of solid ensemble work and tightness that they had on The Yes Album and Fragile, I love The Silent Wings of Freedom, but Tormato sounded cluttered and the production was a tonal mess, but I think the songs were good. Another reference to Fragile, by the way is the bassline on Long Distance Runaround, Chris plays almost the same pattern as Tempus Fugit, racing up the fretboard in the major scale. Lol...

I would recommend listening to "Tormato" next. It is an under loved, under appreciated Yes album that to me still sounds like classic Yes. This was Jon Anderson's last studio album with Yes just prior to "Drama" It came out in 1978, just after "Going For The One". The band were still at the top of their game. Stand out tracks are "Future Times/Rejoice", "Don't Kill The Whale", "Arriving UFO" and "On The Silent Wings Of Freedom"; Chris' bass work is just amazing on this track. You may have heard some negative things about "Tormato" but if you love Yes music you will not be disappointed. Also some of their later albums are pretty good too, mid to late '90's--"Keys To Ascension", "Keys To Ascension 2", "The Ladder", and "Magnification".

(Big Smile) Knew you'd like Tempus Fugit, Justin! *Chris Squire!* By the way, the next Chris Squire Masterpiece you need to review has got to be *On The Silent Wings Of Freedom* which was the one stand-out "Squire song" on YES' Tormato album. That song alone was reason enough to buy the album. One of his absolute best inspirations on the bass, ever. You'll absolutely love it. 8:07 "How is he [singing] and playing bass?" You will get a very satisfying answer to that question if you check out the video the guys did for this song (it was the dawn of the MTV era). It shows you Chris & Steve and Allen at their absolute prime as musicians/performers. It's _very_ impressive to watch Chris singing while his fingers are flying over the frets. A must view: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKvbi61_nrRrars&ab_channel=yesofficial With OTSWOF, you'll have exposed yourself to most of Chris' best work, with only a couple more left that you haven't reviewed. I think maybe his (& YES') best composition on the 1st two albums was *Sweet Dreams* which gave a strong hint at the greatness that was to come on their next album, The Yes Album. Count me as one who'd like to see you review their first 2 albums _and_ Tormato before revisiting the Trevor Rabin YES of later years. (When you do get to the TR YES era, I highly recommend *I'm Running* which is a compositional masterpiece that reminds of the Classic YES Era, including one of Chris Squire's best driving riffs of all time!) Great work, Justin!

Yes, "Tempus Fugit" is a great closing track for the album. If you go back in time, I think Tormato would be a good choice precisely for its atypical side (Rick Wakeman with his new range of keyboards with sounds not necessarily relevant but that's what makes this album so unique). Tormato is admittedly a bit questionable but it contains its share of interesting pieces. Otherwise, you could go further back with the second album Time and a Word with its more orchestral feel (it contains brass and strings). it has one foot in the past (with his slightly psychedelic touch like on the first album but another in the future with his slightly more ambitious arrangements). And further on in 2001, you have Magnification (last album to date with Jon Anderson) which is also atypical since for the only time in their career Yes has no keyboardist but is augmented by a symphony orchestra. there are good compositions there that intelligently combine the mix of genres. Or you also have the album Fly from Here (10 years after Magnification) with Canadian singer Benoît David, plus returning Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn (the latter not as a direct participant, although he does backing vocals and has composed a good part of the record but mainly as a producer). stylistically the album is almost Drama's little brother but less powerful and inventive). in 2016 Trevor Horn re-sang the vocal parts of Benoît David (questionable process) and the album was released in 2018 under the title Fly from Here - Return Trip. in a topic devoted to this you could make a comparison between the two versions (it could be interesting to have your opinion on this). Well, these are just suggestions (and I know you have yet to do the rest of 90125 and Tales from Topographic Oceans), so now Justin it's up to you!!!

An album which starts and ends so strong, thrilling and well-delivered throughout. When prog started to die Yes chose the New Wave route with this album, but the experiment faltered and sadly (IMO) decided to go AOR until they revisited their past later in the 90s. Tormato is their last, straggling attempt to hang onto being prog yet relevant and it fails where Drama shone. I think it would be a good album to close the gap between Relayer and Drama. It has some good tracks and some questionable ones, but I think it has a LOT to debate and divide yes fans. And I would love to hear it through your ears! Happy new year, Justin.

One of the more quickly-addictive songs of the album. It's a fun one. Nice beat, good bass, nice lyrics. A good way to end the album. As for this song being covered by Rush... It'd be interesting. When Yes got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Chris Squire had already passed away, so Geddy Lee stepped in for him for the songs they played. Squire was one of Geddy's inspiration, and Geddy's got the chops for doing Squire's riffs. For another album, I'd say Tull's "Songs from the Wood". You touched on once of the songs. I had to play it over and over again the first time I heard it. You say you'd love to hear Rush cover this, Chris is a huge influence on Geddy. He DID play bass on Yes's HOF performance of Roundabout after Chris's passing. I don't care what other Yes album you do. But you might as well move on the 90125, there ARE a couple of masterpieces on there. On a complete side step. Steve Howe did an album with the keyboardist from the band Ultravox, Billy Currie. I wouldn't suggest that album, but I could see you doing a little dive into Ultravox. how about.....Vienna. starting with the first track instrumental "Astradyne"

Drama, particularly this song, holds up surprisingly well 40 years on. It was quite controversial when it came out among Yes fandom because it was so different from classic Yes. I agree with another commenter here that those listening with an open mind liked it. I sure did. Tempus Fugit remained on my workout iPod playlist for a long time.

Steve Howe said they added all the "yes, yes" to give the song the "Yes muckety Muck".. Songs that have the group's name in the lyrics either suck (Wang Chung) or great like "Who are you" or this song...

In the 2011 tour they opened the concert with Tempus Fugit and it was perfect. It was more like an opening credit. Singer was Benoit David and he nailed it.

As much as I always loved this song, I suggest "That, That Is," from Keys to Ascension takes it in a further direction and followed with "Mind Drive" should leave your mind blown. It's the "classic lineup" at their best ever. Have a great day JP.

Absolutely!! "That That Is" on their hybrid studio/live 1996 release Keys to Ascension....One of Yes's last, truly prog attempt, before they broke up. First note, some of the early lyrics may be on hard/strange subjects for a Yes song. However, over 19 minutes the music takes you a on journey that starts soft and then builds, slows, then builds again; so that each movement combines and brings a very satisfying crescendo in the last 4 minutes. It truly rocks!! And the best part, it is all YES!!! Can hardly wait to hear your thoughts. Thank you!!

I remember being blown away when this hit the radio. As a big Jon Anderson & Rick Wakeman fan, I was initially worried. Drama, as you now know, was exceptional. It definitely exceeded expectations. I made damn sure I saw them live when this line-up toured. I saw the recent Drama performances with Jon Davidson on vocals and Billy Sherwood on bass. They nailed it. Other Prog Album Suggestions: Gentle Giant - Three Friends (Seriously, what are you waiting for?), Free Hand Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe, - their self-titled album Genesis - We Can't Dance, And Then There Were Three, Calling All Stations Yes - The studio tracks on The Keys to Ascension. (There's a release Studio Keys, but some of the mixes are different.) Vangelis - Heaven and Hell (Famous for the Theme from Cosmos, but other parts are great, if not better) Kitaro - Dream (features three songs with Jon Anderson.) Rush - 2112 (Did you do this yet?) Moving Pictures Supertramp - Breakfast in America... Phantom of the Opera; Oridinal Broadway Cast (Just want to see if you're paying attention) That's enough to get you started. Happy New Year Justin!

Heaven and Hell by Vangelis is cool. ABWH is YES without Squire. Loved that album.

A great track. Much more akin the classic Yes. Great riffs from all the guys, but partic Chris, he's outstanding. I can even forgive Horn's vocals (Sorry, Yes without Jon, I struggle), though I wasn't fond of the vocoder part. They are capable of such great harmonising, I'd have preferred their voices. *Re a recommendation, how about Nantucket Sleighride by Mountain. Would make a fine tribute to the late, great, Leslie West, who passed, sadly, only a few days ago.

There is a song by Gentle Giant called "For Nobody", which to me has always been a twin sister to this one here. Same energy and also a huge finale to The Missing Piece album, one that is similarly diverging from the mainstream sound of its creators, to the liking - or not - of its hardcore fans ;).

I don’t know why people think “For Nobody” sounds poppy.

PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE go ahead and do "Fly from Here" from "FLY FROM HERE - RETURN TRIP" for the song that was written from the same era as Drama. Make certain it is the "RETURN TRIP" version as it features the exact same lineup as Drama.

Believe it or not, this album was originally panned by a large portion of Yes fans. But that turned around fairly quickly. I was never one of those "No Jon, no Yes" types. The more you listen to this album, the stronger it gets. I guess the only '70s album left is "Tormato" (outside of Tales). It's not totally bad, there are 3 or 4 really good songs on there.
@nickj54514 жыл бұрын
8:11 Yeah I was totally gonna say, it sounds a bit like, while Yes was a big influence on Rush, maybe Rush ended up influencing them a bit too.

I saw this title and was HELL YEAH ! this is a good one my only comment "Chris Squire" a related but different request I'd like to see you react to some of the "Squacket" album Chris Squire and Steve Hackett collaboration

It's a pity that Jon Anderson didn't sing the Drama material live when he returned to the band. The music is brilliant and, as you say, Chris Squire was on absolute fire on this album. I don't think it was personal because Jon and Trevor Horne worked together successfully on 90125. Suggestion - try Beyond and Before from the first album for more superb Squire bass.

There's a remix album done by Steve Howe's son, Virgil, that remixes Yes songs with a EDM style. "Tempus Fugit" is one of the songs on it. I rather liked it, other people into that sort of thing might want to check it out.
