idk what schools y'all went to saying "attendance is a basic principle you shouldn't be rewarded for it" that's true but when you go to a broke inner city school where no one wants to be there, awarding perfect attendance with £30 and doughnuts is quite important to get those fuckers to stay in school and actually realise it is important

I kind of feel for this one. In elementary school, I was sick frequently, and missed a lot of days. One year, I remember being one of the only students that didn't get the attendance reward, and it didn't feel good. It did make me feel like I was being treated different for having a shitty immune system, and I did understand that. That said, ANY of those awards could make kids feel shitty if you think about it. If some kid got none of them, and compared themselves to the kids that did, their self-esteem could take quite a blow. It sucks. Being rewarded is always great, but getting nothing is always shit.

I grew up as a child with a lot of health problems so I was in and out the hospital a lot due to surgeries and treatments. I never in my life got a perfect attendance award, but most of my friends in school did. I always envied my friends and thought it was all my fault that I couldn't be healthy and get that award for my mom and dad. I never thought someone denying the award would make me feel supported. I'm not someone who would complain or make such a scene about these kind of things, but I appreciate this woman for doing what she did.
@Pumpkin0_07 жыл бұрын
Whoever got that award could go on a fun trip? No wonder the mother didn't like it. Many kids have no control over getting sick or having family emergencies, and then they see another kid who had no issues throughout school going on a trip. Many of those kids had no choice and shouldn't be "punished" for it. That award makes no sense.
@AW334067 жыл бұрын
Eika Pumpkin They aren't Punished they perfect attendance Kid deserves his Award
@Pumpkin0_07 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that something so simple is so hard to understand. If you break a leg and end up in the hospital, how is it your fault that you can't go to school the next day or that same day? You, who got your leg broken, could be a hair away from getting the award and going on a fun trip. Instead, another kid gets to go just because *nothing happened* to them. This is rewarding luck, which makes no sense at all, but apparently it's automatically YOUR fault that your leg broke, so no fun trip for you. I guess you should've chosen the WEEKEND to break your leg. If the kid who got the award had gotten sick and missed school, no award for that kid either. What kind of logic is that? This is a lottery award and you really believe the kid DESERVES it? Wtf. The award shouldn't even exist because it makes no sense. It's based on luck.

When I graduated elementary school, I had a perfect attendance award for 7 whole years. I worked hard to get this award. I had probably no other talents which means I wouldn't get any other award other than my diploma, which everyone gets. I got the perfect attendance award while other people got different awards for what they had done. I don't think this award singled out any others. It's like saying that the valedictorian award, where the student worked HARD to earn their best average.....all awards are important, no matter what it is.

I don't know about everybody else but the policy at every school I've been to is that as long as it is an Excused Absence (sick for up to 3 days without a doctors note, a doctor/dentist appointment, a family emergency where you call in to the school or have documented proof, and/or a field trip/competition day) it doesn't count against your attendance record. I had perfect attendance from kindergarten until I graduated and I definitely had sick days and plenty of all day competitions where I was off campus for various things. Most of the time we only got a nice sheet of paper that said "Perfect Attendance Award" yada yada (though I did get a free T-shirt a couple times), but I always saw the award as something that signified my commitment to going to school. I woke myself up every morning at 5 am to catch a bus at 6 so I could be to school at 7. My parents had to focus on being to work early in the mornings too so honestly the only person who held me accountable for going to school was myself. It might seem pretty garbage to other people but I always enjoyed getting my perfect attendance awards. Plus none of the other kids even cared that I got my little ''special" sheet of paper because it didn't make anyone else feel any better or worse about themselves. If anything people would just be a little shocked that I even cared enough to show up everyday when I could so easily skip and make-up anything later.
@emg83897 жыл бұрын
Madisen Kerr shit I wish my school was like that. most schools in my state don't count emergencies/illnesses or family members passing on our record but we still wouldn't get an award bc technically we weren't at the school everyday which is fucking stupid.

I live in England. We get the 100% attendance awards. If you are sick and you give in a note within 2 days you may be excused ( for an appropriate reason). We know perfect attendance isn't all that. There was much more awards that everyone wanted. Like the head teacher Award. I stopped caring after year 3 and I had impeccable behaviour and attendance

I agree with this mother. Just look at the working world. When we're sick, instead of resting, we need to go to the hospital, wait for hourssss when we could have had rest and taken meds from home, just to get a silly medical note from the doctor to give to our employers the next day. It's ridiculous. And people look down on those who are sick. Get out of here. We are human beings. Some people are prone to sickness and some are not. I don't get sick at all, but I do get tired. When I am tired and my head feels heavy, i take medical leave. And my boss is nice enough because our organisation doesn't need to show MC note when we're sick. So we actually get to fucking rest. People need to be more humane minded. We're not robots. People get sick, people get tired. Productivity will still happen. At least you don't have disgruntled, tired, sick workers.

Why don't we look at it this way? A perfect attendance award is a teacher's way of thanking students who were in class everyday so that they didn't have to take the extra time to do make up work packets and schedule make up lessons/tests. I really don't think it's a statement against the kids who don't have perfect attendance or real praise for those who do. I don't think any kid goes through the school year with the end goal being a perfect attendance award.

(Talking about the American school system, I don't know about the system in the U.K.) Schools get money from having their students attend so they want their students to have perfect attendance. I think my high school got around $80 a day per student for their attendance. If my high school hadn't been so greedy about getting that attendance money then I could have graduated a semester early.

Some industries don’t care if you get sick. Either because they don’t want to pay someone who hardly comes in or they want you to be in so you make the company money. I think the rationale behind rewarding 100% attendance in schools is that it prepares children for the working world.

Perfect attendance always got me down when I was a kid in elementary. To me it just mean I went to school everyday and still couldn't learn as fast as kids that took sick days all the time.
