My Lao American refugee dad came to the US in the late 70’s as a teen, spoke no English, but was able to go to community college for ESL through the 80’s. Found himself in a HVAC certification program there, and finished in the early 90’s. Started his own HVAC company, based solely on word of mouth in the local Asian community that owned stores, laundry mats and dry cleaners and restaurants. He always hooked them up, and they were all so loyal. Welp, my parents are retired and living the comfortable American dream now. HVAC is where it’s at!

Being a HVAC mechanic vs owning a company is totally different, like being a plumber and owning a plumbing company most HVAC people I know are living paycheck to paycheck. I think Master technicians make 100k which isn't much in Southern California.

I know plenty people in the trades, they are mainly hourly, they depend on jobs and beating out the lowest bids, I'm a ECE major who works in tech they would trade jobs with me in an instant, keep in mind they have no stock equity, pension/401k, and usually not much vacation, if you want to go in trades if you don't work you usually don't get paid, not to mention deadbeats who will refuse to pay and litigation would cost more than the job is worth.
