@Daniel Meyers i disagree. There are other ways to store energy than batteries, such as supercapacitors, hydrogen and other synthetic fuels, etc. Also there are smart solutions that can help distribute energy consumption better. And i do not think we should be using solar energy alone, but rather a combination of sources, to make sure the energy generation is better distributed. With respect to recycling solar panels, new methods have been recently developed. For example, first solar has developed methods to recycle their solar panels completely, and they are made of cdte, which is one of the hardest to recycle. On top of that, i do not believe that producing and recycling solar panels, wind turbines or even batteries every 15-25 years compares to the pollution fossil fuels are causing. If you are waiting for nuclear fusion to come around, they have been trying to make it work for about 50 years with very little progress, so i can't see that happening in the near future, which is when we need it. I did not say it would be easy to make the change, and it might not provide us with all the energy we are using, but it will provide us with all the energy we need. And despite recyciclability issues, renewables like solar, wind, geothermal or marine are the least contaminant way. On top of that, fortunately we have another 10-15 years before we have to recycle all those panels to figure out how to do it better.
@drawyourbook876
@drawyourbook876 5 жыл бұрын
@Daniel Meyers Nuclear has a very low response time though, so if you have peaks in energy consumption, you still need storage or alternative source of power. I don't know about the recycling of the material, but I now that if we cannot recycle it, we cont have that much uranium in the world to feed our needs for long. Also, according to the laws of thermodynamics it cannot be a completely closed loop (which still gives issues of safety, fuel extraction, etc.) I know renewables are not perfect, but it is also not the case for nuclear, for me that is a matter to think about where we want to put our research money. And China is also heavily investing in solar and wind and hydropower, so they are basically doing everything, which is probably the best approach for a fast solution. In my opinion that is one of the reasons our energy systems are failing now, because we decided to concentrate only in one source, and then we exhaust it.

I'm proud of myself for actually clicking on this as the discussion of climate change massively triggers my anxiety disorder. However, I'm really glad I did, as I've always been in the camp of "it's too late so I'm going to stick my head in the sand and ignore it". But you're right. It's not too late. I'm also glad you brought up the thing about the 100 companies that are the problem because I feel like so many discussions about climate change end up being about ordinary people pointing fingers at each other and blaming each other for not doing enough, when what we actually need to do is put pressure on governments to make big changes and regulate those companies that are to blame and put pressure on the companies themselves to make a change. It sounds cynical, but I'll doubt they'll change their ways out of the goodness of their hearts. Money talks, I suppose, so we need to organise and work out how we'll spend our money to force change. (Also I'm finally joining the gumption club, hooray!)

one thing that really gets to me about climate change is the narrative that our grandchildren won’t have a life that is recognisable to us. although this is true and very scary, i wish the current discussions about climate change also face up to the realities climate-related disasters occurring today, affecting the most vulnerable people in our world. for example rising sea levels means people living in pacific islands e.g. Kiribati are having to relocate their homes that have been in the family for generations. the islanders are passionate about campaigning for action, yet Kiribati as a state has contributed such a negligible amount towards global carbon emissions. the people/countries that are least responsible for climate change are the most vulnerable to it. we will be fine. the UK (as an MEDC) will be fine. the millions of people who are being displaced right now and the predicted 1 billion climate refugees by 2050 will not 😣.

Excellent video! Neoliberalism has led us to believe that the solutions lie in our individual consumer choices but the climate crisis cannot be solved with capitalism. Novara Media did a podcast with founders of the 'Labour for a Green New Deal' campaign - would thoroughly recommend listening to it. There's also a Novara Media interview with Asad Rehman on their youtube channel. He discusses climate justice and how climate change has been depoliticised by previous environmental movements. If you're a student who is interested in climate justice activism, there are dozens of organisations that support grassroots student activism e.g. People & Planet. Many SU's have a P&P or fossil free society campaigning for their university to stop investing in fossil fuels. Activism is a great thing to get involved in if you feel like an insignificant individual in the face of this huge issue!
@GhostsOfThings
@GhostsOfThings 5 жыл бұрын
I think the reason we cling to the individual changes we can make is because it feels like we're doing something. When I decide to alter any part of my life to lower my carbon footprint, I can just decide to and do it that day. I don't have to depend on anyone else to do it. I've always known this kind of thing will never be enough, but in a small city where I can't even get the municipal government I would like to have elected, it's so easy to feel like you're railing against this huge, immovable wall. And then, even if somehow, miraculously, we managed to get our federal government to see the crisis and actually take action, even if my entire country went zero emissions, it wouldn't be enough. Nothing makes me feel insignificant like trying to bring about solutions for climate change. But I haven't stopped yet and I will never stop, because there isn't another option.

Yes, that's quite a big one. However we also have to remember that these 100 companies do not exist in a vacuum: they produce things we all use, extract the petrol we put in our cars etc. So yeah, I'm pretty much on the camp "we need to look at the systemic level and not put all the blame on individuals", but at the same time I worry that catch phrases like these will make people distance themselves even more from the problem (as in, who cares if I drive to work every day when 100 companies produce 71% of all pollution). I hope I'm making sense!!

First time commenter here! I'm an environmental engineer and I am going to have to choose my first job very very soon, and part of what makes me panic is the fact that there are so many aspects of climate change and human-based destruction. I want to make a difference, and I want to work for mitigating or at least adapting to the change, but I don't know how to start. I am currently doing an internship about waste treatment, which is a huge topic, but I'm already soooo freaked out because we shouldn't have so much waste in the first place, and we shouldn't have to incinerate and by doing so, release more Co2 and other polluants in the atmosphere, but we do now. And it's frightening. I guess my point is that I'm very curious to see if your series can help me feel better about my field choice when I have to make it (which I should really work on now). Thanks for caring and daring to make a change. If you want an interesting book, I really love this one : what we think about when we try not to think about climate change (per espen stones). It's about how we should speak about climate change to adapt to the psychology of people.

Doing small things like recycling, or choosing eco friendly options, is not something people do to save the climate. It's something people do to make themselves feel better about themselves. People do the small and easy things, so they have an excuse not to do the big changes. Sometimes the world requires individual sacrifice, for the greater common good. We are now facing such a moment in history, but we're not aware of it, because it's not in our face yet. When you saw that glacier, it kinda went in your face, so you got it. But looking back to the last time the world was in such a predicament, was the last great war. Throughout the occupied Europe there were people working in cover, with sabotage, assassinations, illegal printing and other resistance activities taking up resources the Germans could have needed elsewhere. Throughout the free world there were people volunteering as conscripts, wanting to fight for other people's freedom. There were scientists defecting from fascist countries, going to help allied develop technology to fight the Germans. There was an enormous collective effort throughout the allied countries, in order to put a stop to a fascist take-over of Europe. Sometimes the world requires individual sacrifice, for the greater common good and we are now facing such a moment in history, again, but it hasn't dawned on people yet. We have to do things that might hurt us. That is what a sacrifice is and that is what is demanded for us at this moment of time in history, not just recycling our coke bottle. When we learn that meat consumption is a bigger cause of greenhouse gasses than cars, then we can't really continue eating meat on a daily basis, even though that might be the best tasting option. We can't really afford to drive a car alone to work every day, instead of taking that horrible collective transportation alternative. And most greenhouse gasses is emitted through producing and transporting goods for consumption, so it's a necessity that we reduce our consumption significantly. You don't need a phone, a laptop, a desktop and an ipad. And you don't need to buy a new one, if the old one is still working. And you don't need to buy clothes if you can stitch up the old pants. And you don't dozens of cosmetic products, shampoos and such. And you don't need a shower every day. Everything you buy, is a part of the consumption . Eco-friendly alternatives are mostly just a lie, sometimes they're 10-20% better than the alternatives, but the best is to reduce the amount you use significantly, or cut it out all together. Generally the rule is, if it's comfortable to make a change - like changing the type of shampoo you use - then it's just a lie you tell yourself. Secondly, comes the pressure we can put on the world through our political actions. If there's a political party that claims they are concerned about climate change, but they don't want to do anything that might hurt the economy, then they don't get it. Having to do drastic measures which might hurt the economy short term in order to prevent a huge economic crisis 50 years from now, is _of course_ a better option. The truth is we have to scale down consumption, private driving, meat eating and energy that comes from fossil fuel and that is going to hurt the economy in a short term. But not doing it will be far worse, so it's just a sacrifice we have to do. And so we cannot give any creed, or vote, to any party or politician that is not serious about this. And if you ever hear someone criticise a party for being so green they will hurt the economy, then you know that's a political party worth voting for. We can't change the world through individual sacrifice alone, we need an entire movement, and we need people in important positions in society.

But I respect and value you and your opinions and videos so much that I decided to „sit through“ this, and boy did it hit home! I was almost offended when the Fridays for Future movement started, as I felt (and sometimes still feel) like it takes away from other important movements. But yes, maybe it just should be everyone‘s priority. I still think that it sort of diminishes other causes, mostly social justice ones. But I now see the necessity. Man oh man, how I hate the individual shaming, when it‘s literally huge companies‘ and capitalism‘s fault that we‘re in this apocalyptic shit situation!

Hi Leena! I'm currently studying a Master's degree on Climate Change, renewable energies and sustainability. I recommend you read about these topics: Peak Oil and degrowth. They really blew my mind and made me see a lot of things differently about climate change and what we will be living in the next decades. Also, I almost didn't want to watch this video because I was afraid it was going to be another one about how you can just stop using plastic and the planet will be saved (the internet has been full of those lately) but I trusted you and it was so worth it. I'm so glad you've been doing the research on this! For a while I had been thinking about what you just mentioned in this video, how individual action takes the spotlight away from collective, meaningful action, and I'm just really happy you're here and making these important statements and creating content that I think is more informative about the consequences of climate change. I'll be waiting for the next episode impatiently!

I love this video. To the second lie, I would add that climate change intersects with other systemic injustices like gender and racial inequality. Those things do stop us from dealing with it properly in the West because the majority of its victims are women and people of colour in the global south. So you can't care about creating a fairer world for us all without caring about climate change and vice versa. You cannot do anything about climate change without understanding the role that neoliberal capitalism plays in it. All of this is to say, that climate change puts pressure on the politics we already have and maybe why we don't want to think about it too hard. 👀💀

@@anotherdegenerate3520 Well, let's clarify one little thing, intersectionality is basically used to blur the distinction between scientific analysis and political commitment to make acceptable, particularly on the left, the identity and culturalist claims of minorities by assimilating them to social struggles in the name of equality. Intersectionality is part of an Americanized and ghettoized vision that results in opposing so-called "black" feminism to so-called "white" feminism and therefore considered "bourgeois". Another issue of your intersectionality BS is that it implies a hierarchy in the struggles. Anyway, all of this to say that intersectionality has nothing to do with climate change/ecology. That's very nice to use a "complicated" term, it makes you look smart if you know what you're talking about, but you apparently do not. The word you were looking for is ecofeminism. Amazing video! And deserving of far more than 9,000 views. I, too, intend on dedicating the next 11 years to progressing climate action, and holding those who profit off of the destruction of the planet to account. I’ll be 34 by then, and hope that the future will look much more certain than it does now.

This video is so very important for me, because i'm stressing about this to the point of having nightmares of extinction, waking up in the middle of the night thinking what i can do to limit my carbon footprint, and worrying if i should ever have children. You have somehow calmed me down a bit and motivated to do better at the same time. Thank you so much

To be fair, while big companies might be responsible for a lot of pollution etc., it's only us as consumers that allow them to keep doing it by purchasing their products. Ah, capitalism. Are you aware that going vegan is the single biggest thing you can do to reduce your impact on the environment? The animal agriculture industry is the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases (at 14.5% of global emissions, ahead of all transport combined) and if everyone in the US did meatless Monday, it would be equivalent to taking 7.6 million cars off the road. To be fair, I went vegan for the animals, but the reduced carbon footprint was a nice bonus. I worked out that my cat and I both have about the same carbon footprint because of his diet o.O

Persuading yourself not to panic whilst panicking about climate change is SO ME. I've had a similar clicking moment/sudden realisation. I'm still gonna make art, bc it's what I'm good at, but now p much ALL of it is about educating, changing, inspiring progress for the climate crisis. Happy to say I'm working on 3 environmental art projects currently, and all of them, I hope, will create actual change. I'm also starting a social environmental project with my friend to do with corporations... so yeah. Positive panic. Let's do this.

OKAY. Here are 4 documentaries (found on Netflix) that not only explained to me exactly what's happening regarding climate changing, but gave me GENUINE HOPE that things can change with the right focus on the right things. A Life On Our Planet & Chasing Coral allowed me to understand the full impact. And Kiss The Ground & Brave Blue World made me see feel a lot less helpless. They made me see that there are things being done and real tangible ways to create an impact are POSSIBLE. But really, the best some of us can do is spread the information in these documentaries, and work towards ways that we can help. Not only have these documentaries given me hope (and quite frankly made me cry), I feel like I actually have goals and a purpose bigger than me FINALLY. Love you all ❤🙏🏽

I think this will be an interesting series, it was certainly a very good start. To help reduce the unhelpful panic it's quite good to remember that the 11 years number doesn't mean we have 11 years to prevent devastating climate change. Devastating climate change is happening regardless. 11 years (or a bit less now) is how long we have to LIMIT the damage to ONLY devastating and prevent absolute catastrophe. It's important to know that melting glaciers, rising sea levels and more severe weather conditions is pretty much what we're aiming for as a best case scenario at this point and shouldn't be seen as a sign of failure. As long as there are humans around to complain about the world we should count ourselves lucky at dodging the self inflicted climate change bullet.

I really think we need to put more pressure on these companies to pay their taxes and also to find more sustainable alternatives to their methods of production. It isn't fair that the small minority which makes up the ruling class is able to get away with these global crimes against humanity. We need to put pressure on them so much more so than on governments.

You're so right about the nuance about Lie One. One can refuse plastic straws until the cows come home, but 47% of the plastic waste in the ocean is discarded fishing equipment, which itself is driving the depletion of fish populations. However, individual actions, like maybe cutting back on seafood or getting it from a sustainable source is one less customer for irresponsible fisheries and could help inspire other people to make similar decisions. I think the hard part is finding the balance between doing the right thing versus what you've been led to understand is the right thing. As a Humanist, I think we'll find a way, but it's going to be hard work.

I worked at a Party store (I won't say which one) a couple years ago for about two months. Every single day we had to fill multiple huge bags of non recyclable plastic waste (from packaging). Then I really took a look at the products we sold and I asked myself "what's going to happen to all this junk when the party is over". Just one company in one location made me realize how ignorant we actually are. Absolutely NON of this means "don't bother recycling". People and companies need to be aware of how they are disposing of their trash. I look into my back yard every week and it looks like a land fill, because that's where the entire neighborhood's trash inevitably ends up! These are the reasons I am so conscious of what I do with my garbage when I'm done with it. Yes, it's work and No, I feel like it's useless. What else am I doing about it? I'm telling you.

yeh but think about it this way- of everyone who COULD transition to a eco-sustainable lifestyle and stopped buying fast quick products and thought about what they ate, how they travelled etc... a significant amount of the demand FOR these corporations would be eradicated and that in itself would help improve things. also as someone who has no means of persuading these corporations from just stopping lmao i NEED to do what i can personally to feel like i'm actually doing something. i can't live ignorantly... i always feel like i need to force myself to improve. individualism and neo-liberal capitalism are the death of the world and i refuse to contribute towards those systems more than i physically have to because i live within them. when people just say oh these corporations are responsible we ourselves evade responsibility which feels pretty individualistic to me. We need to come together and think about what we can do personally AND what we can do for each other. i personally boycott shit companies and try my best to live as much of a sustainable lifestyle as possible within my current limitations. i feel helpless and hopeless so i need to do the things i can to live as environmentally friendly as possible. i also always email my local mp to remind her to focus on the bigger picture.

I'm glad you brought up the fact that while it's good to make personal changes in order to help with climate change such as using less single-use plastic, it's not going to make a HUGE difference because I've felt this way for a while now. I feel so helpless because the biggest things that contribute to climate change feel completely out of my control. I can't just ask all of these huge companies to stop putting out so much of the emissions that are speeding up climate change and I can't force the leaders of the world to stop squabbling over irrelevant issues and instead focus on the one massive issue that unites us all in that it will be detrimental to everyone if we don't do something about it. But maybe there is something I can do on a grander scale, I just have no idea where to start. Writing to my local MP, protesting? I just feel a bit lost tbh and if anyone has advice please please please let me know ahhh

Great video Leena ! I really like the positive angle you took, really looking forward to the next installements in the series :) Regarding getting info on how to participate in the human efforts agains climate change, I find local associations really good because they're pressuring the local mayor/PM/whatever to close nuclear plants, or better the recycling scheme in the area and so are really good at taking big steps at a local (but not indivual) scale. Also, your space dress and your dinosaur shirt/dress are super cool !! By the way, I was wondering if you'd be considering opening a Utip page ? We HAVE to be real about it, learning that Climate Change isn't about the extinction of the planet, but the extinction of us, was such a big turning point in my own fight and the way I tall about it. So far, a lot of my fight about climate change revolves around the textile industry, and trying to get everyone I know (and more) into slow fashion and understanding that clothes shouldn't be cheap, because we should make sure the people making our clothes are getting paid properly and are in safe environments.

Unfortunately those who contribute the least to the climate crisis are those most affected. We need stable non-corrupt governments, carbon pricing, to use land in a smarter and less damaging way (ie. no more new coal mines, stop deforestation, incorporate agroecology), divest from fossil fuels, invest in technology, transition away from fossil fuel energy sources to renewable energy, listen to and work with Indigenous peoples, involve the next generation in conversations and planning of solutions. Climate solutions need to be incorporated into all parts of society. It's not just up to corporate sectors or politicians to solve these issues. We are all on the same planet.

a comment re: the hundred companies defence: those 100 companies are sort of evil, yes, but they also provide products to us, consumers, and thus, we are the ones that can starve them of their profits by changing our personal habits... fuel companies need seat in cars, farmers need mouths full of beef and dairy, clothes companies (fast fashion is the 2nd most-polluting industry) need you to go out and buy their newest line... so we need collective change but cleaning up one's space is also vital if we are to reduce the power of a company
