For me it's about planning your wardrobe instead of always just shopping for new clothes. It's the mindfulness of what you already own and how you wear it, so that you can buy pieces you'll get a lot of wear from.
@velmavlogs7693
@velmavlogs7693 3 жыл бұрын
@@geniej2378 I agree, I’ve always shopped like that. But then that’s not ‘capsule’. I think that terminology refers to packing the tiniest amount of items for the maximum combinations, so probably wouldn’t include a lot of dresses etc (which I lurve). When Lena mentioned seeing people online creating ‘capsules’ of 70+ pieces...that just seems like dilution of the point really.
@geniej2378
@geniej2378 3 жыл бұрын
@@velmavlogs7693 For some people it is a capsule! If you were to buy the latest trends every year you end up with hundreds of pieces and because they're fast fashion, they start looking worn and don't go with this year's latest trends. Going from 300+ pieces down to 70 can be a capsule. It also highly depends if you count work out clothes, if you have a work wardrobe which doesn't overlap with your casual wardrobe, if you live with 1, 2 or 4 seasons of weather, etc..

I think it depends on your circumstances. I work in a really cold environment right now and consequently own two or three really thick wooly jumpers that I can only wear with trousers. They are too chunky to wear with skirts or over dresses and look good. They are also way too thick to tuck into anything and not look super bulky and weird. But they literally save my life all the time because I’d be freezing without them. So relax, it’s all very personal to you, anyway.

As someone that got a minor in math that I never use, here goes: If you have 152 items of clothes, I'm gonna make it super easy and say you have 50 dresses/jumpsuits/single pieces (seems high but whatever), 52 tops, and 50 bottoms. You can either wear a single-piece outfit or one top and one bottom, so the options are: 50 one-piece 52 tops * 50 bottoms (assuming that every top goes with every bottom) which would be 50 + 52*50 = 2650 obviously every top does not go with every bottom, so if we're going with the idea that every top matches with on average 3 bottoms, then it would be 50 + 52 * 3 = 206, which would be repeating every outfit 1.77 times So there you go if anyone actually cares lol

That math problem threw me back to being very confused about choosing between combination vs permutation formulas lmao. For me (as probably for most people) it’s very easy to dress for casual, everyday stuff, but so much harder to find decent things to wear to events or special occasions. I’ve felt chronically underdressed so many times in the past few years - mainly because my boyfriend used to have lots of fancy work events to attend and I was his plus one. Maybe I just need a few go-to, versatile “event” outfits. Orrr maybe I just need to let go of the idea that I always have to wear something new and fresh bc honestly I bet nobody notices what I’m wearing at these events anyway. Rant over hahaha

I think you have to keep in mind SEASONS! 90% of my daily fashion choices involve some thinking about the weather. For example, out of my 5 pairs of trousers, two of them are perfect for colder weather (under 10 °C), and one of them can only been worn if its warm (over 25 °C). The other 2 are best with in-between temperatures. Still... I'm pretty sure I own less than 90 items of clothing, 151 sounds like A LOT to me.

yeah idk how much relevant math(s? english is my 2nd language so w/e) can be done when you dont have a good idea how many things go with other things. like yeah you can ballpark it as it was attempted here but ... not to shade u lol but idk how useful that would be to anyone. excluding people who really have a Uniform or strict rules of what goes with what. also I have multiples of one (so identical copies of an item - leggings). do you count that in the math(s)? 😀

so hereis my view as amaths student ofwhat Lena's idea was: one bottom and one top are an outfit. it doesn't matter if you choose the top first or the bottom first. each piece goes with two more pieces so if you have 152 pieces, and each of them goes with two more pieces, she says that would be152 options for first piece and 2 for second piece. but since blue skirt with yellow shirt is the same outfit as yellow shirt with blueskirt, you counted that combination twice, so we have to divide by half. since we counted every outfit twice

@Scarlet Baxter yes, this was definitely a simplistic view of it. here is my example: i have 1 black pants, one blue-gray, three brown, one of the is gray-brown. i have ten t-shirts, 9 of them go with the black pants, so that is 9 combos, two of them go with blue pants, so 11 combos, all of them go with brown pants, so 21 combo. then i have three skirts they all go with 8 t-shirts, so that is 24 combos. and this is not even counting tights, dresses nor leggings. also i did not count pullovers or cardigans. and without that i already have 21+24 = 45 combinations for one or two seasons. one season is approximately 90 days, so if i wear every of 45 combos twice i am covered for 45 days. with 3 pants, 10 t-shirts, and 3 skirts. I mean in the end, bottomline, i think that the message is (at least the point that i gathered) that we don't need that much clothes to begin with. i personally know i will not buy anything but outerwear or underwear for the next five yers - unless i gain over 10 inches in my circumference

I think it's easy to put a colorful wardrobe together if the colors are similar in some respect. For you, your colors are mostly quite saturated with a few darker tones, nothing pastel or grayish, so they play together nicely. It's also possible to do along other dimensions, for instance a monochrome collection that was all different shades of blue would look sweet, or a complementary scheme that was all purples and yellows... or something based on primaries (yellow, red, blue)... basically, color theory is the answer. It can be done!

This was such a fun video! There's one thing that it seems no one talks about and that is having a capsule or small wardrobe. Not having a washer/dryer in-house. We'd have to go to the laundromat frequently if we wanted to have fewer clothes. And because we don't want to make the trip often to the laundromat we have a good amount of items, which by the end of a month we have worn all of. Especially socks. To want to look good, want to pare down, but not have a way of washing your clothes yourself on demand is a struggle.

Haha okay, Statistician and fashion junkie here. Those calculations don't work, but that's okay! You would need to know the break down of jeans/trousers, tops, sweaters, etc and how long they could reasonably wear that item in a year. We definitely all have too many clothes, and I dislike that most sustainability-focused channels are devoted to a really neutral color palette because it turns off the colorful butterflies among us! I always felt a neutral/capsule wardrobe isn't for me because it's too restrictive and I couldn't let my freak flag fly. Of course that isn't true, and I'm focused on cutting back!

This is like a version of "shop your stash" that i'm interested in doing, where you pull out something you already own (I was thinking of makeup, so an eyeshadow palette springs to mind) and conciously give it some use over a period of time instead of getting something new. Could be a pair of jeans that you keep out and wear a few times over the fortnight to give them some love rather than a whole wardrobe challenge. While hunting you might find some things to pass on to the charity shops if they aren't exciting without needing to actually declutter everything at once.

The gung-ho dress with the green trousers is a gorgeous outfit! The seasonal aspect of capsule wardrobes is the only thing I've really kept because I moved a lot and travelled with a 10kg rucksack for a while so I just don't own that many clothes, but putting some of the more summery stuff away in the winter and vis versa in the summer has been really great for that not getting bored with my clothes feeling. When I bring them out again I'm so excited to be reunited! Plus I had a tenancy to wear my clothes to threads and putting them away helps them last longer causs I'm not abusing them so much

I've been feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of clothes I have and the lack of desire to wear any of it. I think a seasonal capsule wardrobe, as you've presented it here, is a great solution! Living in the American Midwest where the winters are freezing and the summers are scorching, having one consistent wardrobe just wouldn't suit my needs. If I had a wardrobe for winter and a wardrobe for summer, mixing and matching between them for fall and spring, and stow one wardrobe away when the weather is wrong for it... Well that would just about solve it!

But I also can acknowledge that I had too my things in my wardrobe, even if I am the kind of person who experiments a lot. Also I think even when I was starting out, I didn't have a single item besides 1 pair of regular wash jeans that that would normally go in a capsule wardrobe. Thank you so much for making this. I love this so much. It took me a year studying styling systems [Kibbe and Seasonal Color] so I could arrive at the same conclusion of this video: A capsule wardroble doesn't need to be all beiges and white t-shirts that make me look like a corpse [warm/olive skintone lol]. Now my wardrobe is basically 50% black and 50% dark rose color pallette meets 70s color pallette [plus a bit of purple and blue] in my favorite pieces: Form fitting/flared pants, romantic tops and cardigans, and I never been happier with my clothing, like, literally in my entire life. Personally I love color coordinating so a multicolored wardrobe like Leena's is def not for me but I love how she knows what she likes. Capsule wardrobes should be exactly that: Everything you love the most, destilled.

i only wear dresses and i have seasonal wardrobes. ~ 10 dresses per season, each season has "one of each type". more formal, more casual, more punkish, one of each colour, etc. ive started abt 3 years ago and i love it bc 1) now i get to wear all my dresses multiple times and rlly enjoy them, 2) when i see that after one season, ive just not reached for one dress at all, i know its time for it to go. and then i treat myself to a new dress (so max 4 new items in a year, low on budget and low on pollution), and 3) each new season for me is like a whole new shopping bag full of new clothes and i never get bored of stuff ive had now for like 5+ years.

When I tried doing a capsule wardrobe I realized this isn’t for people without money, 5 play suits/dresses/one pieces, 5 tops, 5 bottoms and 3 shoes was more than my entire closet to begin with. I never thought about how questioning each purchase so extensively so I don’t waste money and only wearing black, white and grey affected my life. It’s also benefited me a lot too, I made friends who also only wear black and was “invited” into the goth and metal side of being alt which is a big part of my life now. Plus I traveled a lot for work and being able to pack my entire closet into a carry on made life pretty easy.

lovely video. Love your style. I don't think you're the type of person who really needs a capsule wardrobe because you are so creative and have a sense for building outfits. I guess the people who build capsule wardrobes do so because they feel like they want to look effortlessly put together, and want curated pieces that make them feel that way. They aren't as creative in that department.

Two observations! - If you have a lot of plain coloured tops/pants, a rainbow or multicoloured piece is surprisingly versatile because it will go with EVERYTHING. I have a multicoloured floral skirt, and I also have a multicoloured floral shirt. The latter can go with any colour of cardy, the former can go with any colour of top. Highlight the colours that work for you! That floral skirt has a cream background but I look awful in cream so I wear it with navy, red, turquoise green, dark green - all colours that occur in the print - these capsule wardrobe trends don't make as much sense when you factor in seasonality. Both Jobs and Paltrow live(d) in places without much of a winter, as far as I know. My city spans temperature ranges from above 40 c to below 0 c. I can't wear the same clothes all year round, so if I *did* do this I'd do a summer, a spring/autumn and a winter. I don't even wear cotton skirts with tights underneath in winter, I wear wool skirts because those cotton ones aren't going to be warm enough. My house is insulated more for the hot weather than the cold, it's comfortable inside even without aircon (unless there's a heatwave) but in winter you can heat it, but you still need to wear wool jumpers inside.

one of the other issues of capsule wardrobes is that it implies that there is consistent weather. i NEED access to clothes for 10 C to 45 C this month because all of those temperatures can happen within March where i am. in july and august the temperature is from 5 to 18 C, which isn’t that much difference to a a very cold day in March or February (the hot months). i do LOVE that you show that this can be done with colours and patterns though instead of being boring

Growing up I definitely had a "capsule wardrobe" with variations for summer and winter, because I was living with a large family in a small house. But once I moved out and got my own place my wardrobe got huuuuuge. I'd love to maybe try a capsule wardrobe again but they were always so beige so I really appreciate this Leena!!! It's made me think I could maybe try it after all. I know part of the reason most of my stuff doesn't get worn is because there's just too much to choose from and I've forgotten some of the stuff I own. My main issue is I'd have to have a massive cull of items, and ebay/depop would take so long so I just avoid it :( maybe I will try though!!

The way I figured out my capsule wardrobe, which I'm using while I'm at college (the rest of my clothes are at home so I didn't have to deal with the risk of giving away everything else) is based around the idea that I'll do laundry every 2 weeks. For my one person it ends up being about 2 loads (one for darker colors and one for whites/lights). It's also versatile weather-wise, because I go to school in Rhode Island over the fall and spring semesters. It consists of: 14 tops (mostly tees for me, but also sweaters that don't need a base layer or long sleeved button ups) 7 bottoms (jeans, pants, skirts, overalls/dungarees) 7 overwear (hoodies, sweatshirts, jackets, cardigans, bigger sweaters) 1 one-piece for fun + underwear, bras, pajamas, socks, exercise clothes, coats, and shoes

I ended up with kinda a capsule wardrobe on accident (went home over the summer with one suitcase of clothes from uni abroad, hit the proverbial wall and never went back to said uni, 2/3 of my clothes are in storage abroad), and it's worked much better than I expected. I had one suitcase of my favourite summer clothes and a few I'd left with my parents and my partner. Most of it was blue or grey, since that's what I liked to wear, but also a bit of purple and green. Since then (2 years ago) I've added on lots of seasonal pieces, outgrown about half I started with, and started favouring reds and pinks and yellows. But I still don't have space for lots of clothes, so I try to keep to the kinda-capsule wardrobe. I only add garments I have need for, that replace a loved but outgrown piece, or that I have consedered getting for a couple months and felt excited wearing all along, and I can pair it with close to half of what I already have. I get emotionally connected to clothes quite often, and I love them for their potential and keep them even though I don't wear them too much because of this. But being without most of them for this long has made me realise which clothes I really miss - and that's not at all many. Once I get my things in storage shipped home to me, I have a big clothes clearout to do. I'd like to try and arrange a clothes-swap event in my community, but we'll see. Might just give them to a second hand store (but I am anxious they' d sort out and trash too many of the perfectly wearable pieces just because they are a little worn and boring in design).

Ooh, I love it! I've thought about doing a capsule wardrobe, but I can't get past how austere and businesslike they tend to be. I love black and gray and am gaining an appreciation for soft white and oatmeal, but unless I'm going for an all-out goth look I need to accent that with fun colors and funky cuts! I don't know how well it'd go for me as my wardrobe has a large costume presence and I live in a climate with multiple seasons per week. It'd be a fun experiment.

SO I live in a place that has kind of 4 seasons, but not really winter any more, but let's say we actually had winter, like with minus temperatures, and snow ... one season is around 90 days. if i had 30 outfits (which could be like 5 bottoms and 6 tops) i would only wear every outfit 3 times, which means in one month I would wear a different outfit every day. I really like the concept of shopping my wardrobe, it has helped me a lot. also learning how to modify my ill fitting clothes that i love too.

In my later years of college I had a big cage I hid my two pet rats in stowed away in my closet space, so I couldn't use it for clothing at all. 😂 During my junior and senior year I stuck religiously to project 333 rules and only kept 33 items of clothing and shoes with me at a time (except I let myself have all my jewelry because it all fit in a little folding case.) I had the added challenge of attending a few classes in which I was expected to dress professionally. So I had to have professional looking clothes that didn't wrinkle easily because they had to be folded away in drawers rather than being hung in my closet space. I still managed to keep a pair of leopard print skinny jeans and a pastel tie-dye top in the mix. And it all worked out fine. I honestly wish I had maintained the nerve to down-size more.
