I'm retired law enforcement. I wore this watch on duty for the last two years of my career. You can't possibly be more "rough and tumble" with your watch than I was with mine, yet the crystal survived unscathed. Every review I see of this watch has concern for the box crystal. My experience showed this is entirely overblown. Wears fine on my 7.5 inch wrist, but it's my limit.

@@kidstlme8230 the extent that watch snobs will go to dismiss quartz movements is astonishing. I guess you have to dream up an "end of the world" scenario to justify owning an automatic now. Hey "Brainiac". if an EMP burst has effectively brought down everything with an electronic heartbeat, the last concern I have is whether or not my watch is working. If nuclear holocaust has blasted us back to the stone age, the fact that I have a automatic watch on my wrist, isn't going to jump start the industrial revolution.

My 9 inch wrist is waiting. I ordered this watch before the video was over. I'm hoping this will become my daily driver. I've had one experience with a Bulova before - sort of - it's long story but it's true and I think quite funny. I hope you enjoy it. When I was 15 I worked for my father at his auto shop in Detroit. Among other things we serviced a fleet of flower delivery trucks. A few of the drivers were somewhat shady. I owned 2 watches, a Timex I wore when working and a Helbros I wore when not working. One day one of the drivers offered to sell me a beautiful Bulova for $40 (this was about 1978). I inspected it the best I could and it looked great to my eyes. I ran to the office and asked my father if Bulova was a good marque and he said it was so I did the deal. This was a lot of money to me because I was being paid $2.25/hour. After the deal was done I went into the office to show my father my new object of pride and barely cracking a smile he said "Yep Bulova makes a damn good watch, and Bolivia is a country in South America, I'm not sure what Bulovia is." On close inspection the face of my watch spelled BULOVIA. It ran for 3 days and then stopped. All the adults laughed at me for weeks and I was offered all kinds of "good deals" from the rest of the crew. I laughed with them - you can never take yourself too seriously. Thanks for reading.

I have this watch. It is a bit big for my puny wrists but I find myself wearing it more often than any of my other watches. I just can’t get over how accurate it is. It hasn’t deviated 1 second in the time I have had it. I set it at dst time change and that’s it. Amazing.

And one other point. Put this on the widest and thickest strap you can find and it won’t seem as large as it does on the included straps. I had a custom made leather strap for another of my watches and I put it on the lunar pilot. Makes a great difference.

I'm not a watch collector, or connoisseur, or aficionado, by any stretch of the imagination. I've been wearing plain digital casios daily and Suuntos for decades. Now, I remember my father, who was a chief engineer in oil carrier ships, having an awesome watch. It was a Tag Heuer diver with an orange silhouette of a frogman on the dial. That´s part of his legacy to me. I also wanted to leave something like that to my children, and first time I actually thought about that, I chose the then new Tissot T-touch, but unfortunately I lost it( I was then in the spanish marines expeditionary unit). I got frustrated and started to think that the "legacy watch" idea was stupid. So fast forward to 2017 and my daughter is born. Back comes the idea of the legacy watch... This time it's no gadgety thing. I went for the Citizen "Marina Militare" prodrive automatic diver. Does it look nice on my skinny wrist? Not at all... And here´s my point after all the bullshit: I don't give a damn fuck about how the watch looks, if it's appropiate for a cocktail at the royal palace, or anything like that. I just want it to be my watch. One that, if I take care of it, I can pass onto my children. I wear it every day, on every occasion. I want it to be a part of me. The Bulova has character and heritage in spades. It's an incredibly cool watch! Don't care about it not fitting exactly to your wrist. Be proud to wear it, to make it a part of your legacy. It really deserves that kind of love.

Against many of the comments, I went ahead and bought it. Yes, it is bigger than any other watch I own. However, it wears soooooo well. I am not a big guy (5'9, 175lb) so I am not sure what the thing is, but it really does not look as massive as I thought it would when it's on my wrist. Very happy camper here.

I have admired this piece from afar for a while. I have accepted that the Omega is probably not realistic for me and purchased the Bulova. I don't mind the size at all. It is a really great watch. I purchased a Barton elite silicone band in black to solve the band issues. I don't mind the leather "carbon fiber" looking band, but envisioned this as more of a sporty looking watch.

I have a 7” wrist and wear this watch daily with no issues. The original prototype taken on Apollo 15 was 44mm, so this guy really isn’t all that oversized. It was originally designed for legibility in the darkness of the moon. I wear it on a black/gray bond NATO and it looks amazing.

L JN I thought original was more like 40mm?
@ljn33724 жыл бұрын
Willard Hooton Actually the watch was 43mm.....I just double checked. The true Apollo 15 moon watch was actually a Universal Geneve prototype. Bulova at that time had recently purchased the Universal Geneve and gave this prototype to Astronaut Col. Dave Scott. The original watch used a mechanical Valijoux 72 movement and required a larger case. When you consider in 1971 the average men’s wristwatch was 38 to 40mm, this was a rather large watch. In modern terms, the average watch today is 40-42mm, so I say its dead on in size comparison as a modern replica in my opinion. This link explains the Geneve if your interested: wornandwound.com/bulova-used-universal-geneve-get-moon-can-get-one-today/ And this link is particularly interesting cause it covers the issue and the original patent before the watch every went up for auction or the replica was created: www.mybulova.com/forums/bulova-chronograph-flown-moon-apollo-15 Hope this answers some questions on this great replica for some

I took advantage of the latest Amazon Prime day and finally purchased the Bulova Lunar Pilot (two band special edition). Yes the lug to lug is a little long, but nothing crazy really, it actually wears smaller then many of my watches and my sweet spot is generally 41-42mm cases. The dial including the tachymeter is actually about 38 mm in diameter. I have small wrists (6.75 “) and I’m lovin’ it. A great tool watch with an amazing back story for very little dinero. The Bulova precisionist movement was also a great choice in my opinion.

Hey Jody and fellow Subs. I peeled the stickers off my Lunar Pilot YESTERDAY 👍🏼. Love it. After a l o n g time saving, then getting distracted by other cheaper watches and buying those and then repeating the process, I finally made it to Lift Off. I managed to get one (new) from a Grey Marketeer on eBay for even less than JomaShop's current $339USD.... 1st thought : F A R K it's big. I've got a flat 8 1/4" wrist and I reckon I only just get away with it. 2nd thought: I actually like the leather strap that everyone complains about, quite a lot. I always swap out the stock straps on a new watch so I have 2 cracking slaps of leather on the way from Kvarnsjö...I should've only bought 1! I haven't even put it on the NASA strap yet. This one's a keeper: I can feel it. Thank-you for the excellent review Jody. It put into final countdown. Stay healthy everyone.

I've had this watch for several years - since just after they first came out. I agree with Jodi's comments about the size. I wish that Bulova had made it 43mm like the original. Give it some time though and I expect you'll get used to it. Especially after you start getting tons of compliments about it. I actually got one from a little old lady in a supermarket. The original also had a 12 hour elapsed time feature that I find more useful than the new 60 minute timer. The "top hat" crystal is a feature of the original watch, so although it's an unusual way of installing a crystal, at least they have a good reason for it on this model. Great review!

I too, had looked at the Lunar Pilot in reviews for quite some time, but didn’t jump on it till a month ago, when it went to $336 on Amazon. My wife’s first reaction was that it looked too big on my 7.25 inch wrist. I wish it was just a hair smaller, but I am hanging on to this watch until I die. I did put it on a Mora NATO, which I saw on Dave’s channel, and find I like it more than either of the supplied straps. This was my fifth Bulova and led me to look at some older (smaller) Bulovas. I purchased two Accutrons, a Breckenridge (26B29) and an Apollo 11 (26B62). Then a NOS Accu-Swiss A-15 (65A107) instead of the new and larger 96A245. Last night, I order a refurbished Curv Chronograph (96A186). I still have more Casios and Citizens, but my Bulova collection is catching up. (Update: After a month, I put it back on the supplied Zulu, which now seems better than the NATO. The descent into madness begins. The accuracy is incredible. Easily better than 10 seconds a year.)

At 52 mm it sits fine on my wrist, no overhang on the lugs, and at 45mm it’s the perfect size for me. 44mm is my ideal fit, this is perfect for me. The dial is phenomenal, the movement is incredible and the accuracy is,without exception, the best I have seen in a wristwatch. I picked up the bracelet version in its first run. I set it and let it run uninterrupted for the first 3 years (not adjusting for DST). It ran +/- 0.0 s/d in that time! I have a box shaped 7.25 inch wrist. I can confirm that it absolutely is NOT too big on my wrist. I received my Lunar Pilot, opened the box expecting a monster size eyesore and literally said out loud “What? This doesn’t look oversized at all.” Once I put it on I felt that way even more so. So the reviews that say it “wears small” are spot on. NOW, this is probably the largest watch I could ever see fitting my wrist, but it absolutely DOES NOT look or feel cartoonish. So I breathed a very big sigh of relief over that. My son has a 6.75 wrist and, yeah, it’s too big. So at 7” I feel you can get away with it. Any wrist over 7.25 and you really have nothing to worry about.

I have a Bulova Lunar Pilot. I Love it! Verity Accurate. I have a Rose Gold Bulova Curve with the Highly Accurate 262 kHz Movement. Awesome Time Pieces. But Bulova Is on the “big oversized Watch”. I also wish their Chronograph movements Recorded for more than 1 Hour. I love the Watch, would buy another one - I Love the dial. White on Black - fantastic legibility. The Lume is a beautiful hue. Gorgeous Time Piece! I love the 0.5 Recorder. Awesome Time Piece! I got the Special Version with Calendar. I Like both Straps!

I have absolutely fallen off a cliff in love with mine. There is nothing I don't like. Some gripe about it being a battery operated quartz and the water resistance, I don't care. I have dive watches, automatics and solars. I bought this watch for the atomic era styling, the cultural and historical significance, and the stunning, crisp, handsome dial. Zero regrets.

Bought this exact Bulova lunar pilot watch from jomashop months ago. Yes the size of the watch is a big problem for my small wrist, but I'll still keep it in my collection

Yes Jody insanity is wanting this watch after all the reviews saying its to big. That being said I did it too. It didn't seem to fit very well but I loved the watch so much I went through several bands and zulu straps or NATO's so I finally found a watch braclet that I think makes it look good on my 7 1/4 inch wrist .Dont give up on it if ya love it. I'm sure you'll find something that will work if you really want to keep it.

This watch broke all my rules for buying. I saw it in an IG post and just bought it without any research 3 years ago. It's the largest watch I own, and if I'm honest with myself (which I rarely am with this watch) it's too big for me. It has 6 or 7 straps of various comfort, the most of any of my watches. But I love it. I was worried I'd chip or break that box sapphire crystal, buy it's still as clean as the day I bought it. It's not going anywhere, unless Bulova releases a smaller model.

Great review! I have the Bulova Lunar Pilot and have a larger wrist. It's perfect for me. However, I agree with others, wishing that Bulova would make this in a 40-42mm size. The issue isn't the dial, which only measures in at around 40mm, it's the case. Feels like a pillow case from the 60's and 70's. As for the crystal, the Lunar Has been my daily for over 3 years, and I've wackrd it many times. The crystal is still perfect. I owned the Speedmaster Professional for over 30 years, and I have to say that the Lunar Pilot is build every bit as well. My speedy needed over $800 in repairs, and I was lucky enough to catch the Speedmaster Professional balloon. I was originally going to buy another Speedmaster, but that's gone out the window. My Lunar Pilot scratched that itch. I have the bracelet model, and to me, it's the only one to buy. The bracelet is magnificent, every bit Rolex, Breitling and Omega quality. And it looks better...a cross between a President and circa 1971 Speedmaster bracelet. Every time I think about putting on a NATO or leather strap, I take one liiij look at that beautiful bracelet and stop myself in my tracks.

I have an original no-date version. It works on my 7 1/4” wrist. I like Bulova, collect vintage Bulova, so owning an “homage” to a Bulova original was a no brainier. However, I completely agree the MSRP was madness. I waited 3 years and the price came down about 40%. At that price, it was (and still is) a treat!

I have had a Lunar Pilot for a few months, and I really like it. It fits me well (7 1/2 inch wrist). I got the version that only comes with the different nato-style strap, not the commemorative boxed model.

I own this watch. I have 7.3 inch wrists, so it fits me well. I can see where someone with a wrist size under 7 inches would have a problem with this watch. Not only is is it big, it's practically "bezeless" witch makes it look even larger. I do love the aesthetics of the watch, beautiful dial and great heritage. And I do agree with almost everyone that say this watch would be PERFECT at 40 to 41mm given all that real estate on the dial.

Have one for my standard wrist. Yes, it's big! BUT being a chronometer, with this amazing history, an amazing facing, with two cool straps and at such low price! Do it! I bought it few yrs ago as it was issued and don't regret AT ALL!

I picked up the no-date version from Jomashop for $269.00. Yes, the lug to lug length is a little long. I still enjoy wearing mine even though my wrist is just under 7”. I love having a non-atomic watch that is always accurate. I miss having a date, but not having a date means it is always on the correct time, having such an accurate movement. Your review was fair and balanced, as I have come to expect.. please keep the great content coming!

I just received mine today. The 52 mm LtL is not an issue for me, the largest watch I own has a LtL of 60mm+. I've loved this watch since it was released and I'm really excited to finally get it on my wrist!

I recently bought the steel bracelet pilot. To put a leather or nylon strap on it is a bit tricky due to the spring bar placement "you may say that's why it's on the steel bracelet", but it is nice to do a switch to leather / nylon in the cooler months here in Brisbane. What ever you buy be cautious of it due to the case lower ridge recess at the lugs as it will basically rip off the top skin of the band over a very short time. Curved 20mm spring bars will fix the issue but lower the strength of the bar. I'm sticking with my (Sailcloth nylon bonded leather) straight bar quick release strap as the tough Sailcloth is OK but with a visible mark out. 🖐️🖐️Please note the factory non bracelet(strap) model won't suit the bracelet one at all due to the solid end link machining. Great watch all the same. Cheers Johno,(Hodinkee member) Brisbane.:) 🌞

Wow! Lunar Pilot in my top 10 list! Love it soooo much. Tons of style and history for less then 400 greens. That 70th "cigarette autavia" style case with speedy-style dial - work together perfectly! And it is not too big for me. My "everyday beater" is 47mm radiomir-style brick.

@@JustOneMoreWatch Same boat here, the pluses outweigh the negatives for me, how insanely popular would this have been with even a 46mm L2L, by the way if you get a chance do check out the Bulova 96B229 getting harder to source but that 262khz movement is divine, I have mine on a milanese and it looks the dogs.

Just got one in Inverness at £449. I saw your video last year and was proper smitten. I love my first edition Oris Carlos Coste 2000m titanium beast, but this little (big) beauty just does it for me. an Omega speed master for a fraction of the price. Looking at getting it on a metal bracelet as I think it will take it up a notch. Lucky I have more than a 7.5inch wrist Joedy. Sits just nice for me. Highly recommend it.

It is a fantastic watch! It honestly didn't look bad at all on your wrist... But we all have a preference about how a watch "feels" on wrist and our perception of it at the distal point of our arm. The velcro Zulu does suit the watch well, as they were made to wrap around the spacesuit, and I like that they included that touch (a bit shorter bracelet for those of us not in a pressurized space suit) in the kit for the owner. Nice review... and cheers to Bulova for creating such a nice reissue/homage of their original moon-walking timepiece! Bulova - excellent company. Lots of changes over the years, and they have got some great pieces, new and old. Some of their more premium vintage watches, dive and chrono, rivaled the big names back in the 60s and 70s for a fraction of the money. Let me know if you are selling this one, Jody, because I'll snatch it up in a heartbeat and slap it on my 7.5" wrist. :-) Keep up the good work, and take care. (BTW, have you entertained the idea of JODYSHOP to flip all the watches you go through? Just saying, it's an obvious but catchy idea... haha)

"Provenance" aside, what you are getting is a modified version of the original Bulova Lunar Pilot. I am a fan of mechanical movements, but tolerances of +/_ 10 sec/yrs make it scary accurate, and the reassignment of the chronograph functions makes it more practical for measuring sporting event timing as opposed to EVA missions. The matte black face, clear white indices, pencil hands, and unobtrusive sub-dials provide optimal visibility for a chronograph, which is enhanced by the large diameter of the watch face. Its sheer size, which is inversely proportional to legibility, is an honest reflection of the function of the watch. It sits very comfortably on my 7 1/4" wrist, so the concern is esthetic, not pragmatic--it's not a dress watch. I got the bracelet model, and found the fit and finish to be exceptional for a watch in this price range. I collect interesting timepieces, and this was an excellent purchase.

Yup, this watch is a beautiful monster. I don’t know why Bulova made many of their reissues so large. I had their Stars and Stripes reissue that I tried so hard to love, but it turned out to be a monster on the wrist and I sold it. I recommend the Accutron II. I have one and it is in a much more reasonable case size, has the same VHF chronograph movement, and comes in for less money. Yeah, it’s not the “Space Watch” but this Bulova really is a homage to their own original, unlike the Speedy which retains its true provenance to this day. Great review Jody and terrific shirt too.

Hey mate. Just re-watched this episode to try and fall in love again with my Bulova Lunar Pilot. Like you the straps supplied or any other that I tried just didn’t seem right and made the watch “look” too big! Well Strapify Aus has come to my rescue and I’ve put on the ultra quick release nato in the two tone grey. Problem solved! Watch now looks proportionate to my 7.5” (19cm) flat wrist and the watch now seems integrated to the strap rather than fighting it ! Anyway big shout out to Strapify Australia. Those guys are amazing. Cheers

Owned it for about a year and although my wrist isn't big it fitted pretty well. The thing that bugged me of the start was the movement with it's two times ticking per second. They should have kept it automatic! Everything else was fine. But that odd ticking never stopped bugging me, so I ended up selling it last month!

I just pulled my Lunar Pilot out of the watch box, sat down with my morning coffee and look what I find! It’s a great watch even for its size. If Bulova was smart they’d reissue it a little smaller and more like the original for the 50 year anniversary of Apollo 15 in 2021.👍🏼

Picked one up on Prime Day for a good price. Yes, it is big, but I find it wears well on my 6.5" wrist. I think the issue is Bulovas high frequency movements are big to start. Look at their precisionist and Accutron II watches. I don't think any of them are below 41mm. I put mine on a watch steward elastic nylon. Got one of their original mishap straps and love the combo. Cheers

Jody, the name on the back is the area of the lunar surface that they landed on, not when they returned to Earth.
