We were on Fakarava in February of this year. It was the first of the French Polynesian islands we hit on our World Cruise coming from Pitcairn. It is a paradise in the middle of the Pacific

Very cool to see the coral mountain rise up from the sea. OK landing, too.

WOW cool is right!! Are you kidding me!! That place looks incredible! Never even heard of the country. When the plane pulled up to the "terminal" it looked like it was merely coming into a driveway at a house!

Complete civilian here and may I ask a few dumb questions? What determines a rough touch down landing? Is it auto or pilot skill? On reverse thrust, does that mean engines are not turning or brakes are stronger? I’m absolutely addicted to these great videos!
@joelmorry28645 күн бұрын
There are many factors that can effect the roughness of a landing, the main factor being weather. If there are strong winds (particularly cross winds) it can make landing very difficult sometimes causing a rough landing. Also if the runway they are landing on is short, sometimes it is necessary to land the aircraft as soon as possible to make sure you have as much runway to stop the aircraft. As for reverse thrust, on this particular aircraft the way the reverse thrust works is once the aircraft touches down the angle of the propellers change so that air is redirected forward rather than backwards causing the aircraft to slow down. Hope this answers your questions

Its my understanding that all comms between pilots and ATC and the like are to be in english ?
@AdvantagersRS5 күн бұрын
When you are in French Polynesia with French speaking pilots and French speaking ATC and no English speaking pilots within 1000 miles, this is not uncommon.

@@AdvantagersRS ok thanks !
@F14-talktomegoose5 күн бұрын
@@AdvantagersRS yes I can appreciate that , just thinking of other pilots in the area who could be reliant on understanding other's transmissions for full situational awareness
@ndirangugichuki62604 күн бұрын
Yes but they can also speak in their own language, as soon as they hear another pilot speaking in English, they are all supposed to revert to speaking in English so that everyone understands each other.

Makes me wonder why I live in a city!... windsocks show it is a crosswind landing. Looks like a resort where all those yachts are moored. Must be a ferry service to get around.

It IS very beautiful. And I'd love to go. But realistically, as a place to live - when retiring, etc. - how do people do that? What do people do? I didn't see much development on the approach. And yeah, that's part of the allure. The quiet and the beauty. But functionally... for any of the beautiful places around the world. They ARE great to visit. (and why are they so far away : ) But longer term, any idea what life of a retiree would be like there? Flights if you need medical care (hopefully not often), sit on a boat, fish? Doesn't that wear out after a while
