At 6:17 the crew is cleared for the ILS 25L approach and this caught my attention. They're still above FL300. They're also still 40NM from GRAMM, a waypoint which is just west of San Bernadino, approximately 60 NM from the threshold of 25L. So they're still 100NM from touchdown. The highest initial approach fix for 25L is at 10,000 MSL, so they're still 20,000 feet above that as well. This is super cool; easily the earliest approach clearance I've ever seen.

@justplanes4 жыл бұрын
Yes and not only do they go to FL430 but they often can go high very soon after departure... like we've been right up to FL380-390 right after takeoff for a transatlantic flight when normally on older planes you would start atFL310-350
@wotan109504 жыл бұрын
MrCrystalcranium That’s true! I fly transatlantic every year to visit family. On a 747-400, we leveled off from Newark at 29. We didn’t climb again until past Cape Cod. I flew the same route on a 787-9, and we immediately climbed to 37, and further along, 41.
@keithfreitas29834 жыл бұрын
Depends on the forecastedwinds at different flight levels and if you are using the jet stream going east. The flight plan chooses the best flight level and gives a printout of winds at differet levels along the route for long flights. The crew is supposed to monitor winds and if the headwind is higher than forecasted they suposed to let Dispatch know.

This vid shows just how dry the L.A. Basin is. It actually didn't used to be so dry. Some years had good rainfall. But one of the most blatant weather changes of the Basin over the decades is the departure of significant fog, which used to be common many evenings. Why are you not allowed to have any visual landings in Scandinavia as Captain said curious to know why
@marka79034 жыл бұрын
It's not that they're disallowed per se; there is just never a situation in which they would be useful. These are aircraft flying on IFR flightplans who would prefer to remain under radar control. Many major US airports only use visual approaches to reduce ATC workload (in fact, many of these "visual approaches" are published to facilitate traffic flow).

@@keithfreitas2983 that was my reason for commenting - the shade was was blocking the skippers view forward and must have impacted the co pilots view as well. Even with all the instrumentation and warning systems on modern aircraft I thought the crew had to maintain visual capability.

Why is the 787 considered a "heavy" when it's about the same size as a 737, which doesn't leave the same wake turbulence as a 777 or 747?
@justplanes4 жыл бұрын
