So they have ADSB-In so they can avoid you, but they don't have ADSB-Out so you can't avoid them. I'm not sure if I like that equation. Also, remember when Uber was cheaper than taxis and passed along the majority of the income to the drivers? They kept that up long enough to drive their competitors out of business and then they cut the drivers' pay and increased charges during "peak demand." I guarantee that drone delivery won't be this cheap one year from now.

I was in Santa Clara a couple of months ago, for an IoT conference. Wing was there, and I attended a presentation they gave. I don’t recall names, but it was a representative from Wing and I believe the CTO from the city of Allen, TX. It was very informative. Lots of information about how they were able to navigate not only the FAA regs, but also zoning, local laws and ordinances, and getting buy-in from the local governments that were involved. They chose the DFW area because they figured if they could make it work in one of the world’s most complex airspaces, they could do it anywhere.

I’m leaning toward the idea of drone delivery being a bit dubious. Off the top of my head I can see all kinds of issues. Wind and weather come to mind. Seems like it would be limited to a fair weather service. I see that long cord for lowering the box being problematic. There will definitely be issues with that getting tangled up on something and crashing the drone. If this became commonplace I think noise would become an issue. For commodity items it also seems limited to suburban locations where there’s room for the delivery, but the region needs to also have sufficient density to make the deliveries economically viable, and those seem contradictory. I think a better application of the tech would be delivery of more critical items. Emergency medical materials for rural locations, etc.

The main constraint seems to be the weight limit. That severely limits the practicality of it. If they could deliver 50lbs by drone, this would truly become the ultimate delivery method.
@Henkerhaus
@Henkerhaus 4 ай бұрын
These drones are a hybrid between an airplane and a helicopter. They can hover for takeoff and delivery, but fly as an airplane for speed and efficiency during transit. Good idea, but 3 lb limit has pretty limited usability. It would be interesting to know the all in running cost per delivery. I’m assuming that there is a range limit depending on your proximity to a store. As others have pointed out, weather could be a constraint for delivery. But, 15 min delivery time with no driver required is fairly convenient.
@marcuslinton310
@marcuslinton310 4 ай бұрын
I doubt they have stats yet for overall cost factors. The price to buy one, of course, but have they been around long enough to determine longevity and durability. $3.99 per drone delivery seems like a long haul to see any payoff.

@Streaky100001
@Streaky100001 4 ай бұрын
I think this is a really cool idea, but I think it's a little impractical in a lot of circumstances. It's pretty rare that I need to buy just a single item, and usually buying like that is more expensive than buying in bulk. A can of coke, for example, works out cheaper if you buy a multi-pack, then just grab one out of the fridge when you want it, rather than buying an individual can each time you want one. I think it'll probably get used a lot earlier on just due to the novelty of it, I mean, who doesn't want a drone to come to their house and deliver stuff, but quite quickly I think that'll wear off as people realize having to have stuff shipped 3lbs at a time is a bit of a hassle. I can definitely see it coming in handy for those moments when you suddenly realize you forgot something you really needed, the speed with which it can deliver is pretty handy for that. I mean, say you're in the middle of cooking a meal, and you realize you're missing an ingredient, with these drones it can be with you without need to stop cooking and start over after going to the shop. I just don't know if there will be enough demand there for it to be worthwhile... does that situation occur regularly enough? I'm a little concerned on the aviation side of this. You say it has ADS-B in, but not out. Not all aircraft are required to carry ADS-B, most general aviation aircraft not operating in the airspace types where it's mandatory don't need it. (Obviously, some still will due to criteria around the specifics of the aircraft, but most GA stuff will avoid falling into this I think) That means, potentially, you could have an aircraft without ADS-B flying around that wouldn't be seen by these drones. Obviously, if the drones are only operating up to 400ft, and over populated areas, there should always be at least 100ft altitude offset... but 100ft isn't really much, I'd be uncomfortable having a drone that close I think. I don't know..... I just..... see and avoid is the basic precaution to avoid incidents, and these drones presumably don't have that basic ability to see in the same way a human pilot does.

Range and capacity for "drones" (or SUAS - Small Unmanned Aircraft System) is definitely an issue, but presumably once this is proven out they'll put money in to increased range. Another potential is trucks driving to a central point and making "last mile" (or several mile) deliveries via a fleet of SUAS to speed up deliveries and reduce costs.

Oh, great. I've been a drone pilot for less than 2 years, and I've already been made obsolete by robotics and AI. Back to installing ditches, I guess... A little more seriously, this seems really limited at 3 pounds, but this might be a huge convenience for people like seniors who need their medicine and don't want to drive to the store. It'll be an interesting development to watch.

Yeah I don't think it's a grand solution for groceries but I do think there are specific items that you might need in a pinch. And I'm being serious here I'm not intending to be crass but my wife and I were discussing this. Young couples in the moment may need "protection" in a pinch. Or perhaps if you're home sick and there's nobody there and you need medication or a can of Fix-A-Flat, etc. just seems like there's lots of little small items that you might need without delay when there's no help that this might be useful for

@@JustPlaneSilly Auto parts stores might clean up on drone delivery. I can't be the only one who's been halfway through a repair and realized I'd forgotten a crucial part.

Seems impractical. The 3lb limit makes it gimmicky. I don't remember Walmart drones in the book 1984 though.
