I guarantee that drone delivery won't be this cheap one year from now.

I don’t recall names, but it was a representative from Wing and I believe the CTO from the city of Allen, TX. It was very informative. Lots of information about how they were able to navigate not only the FAA regs, but also zoning, local laws and ordinances, and getting buy-in from the local governments that were involved. They chose the DFW area because they figured if they could make it work in one of the world’s most complex airspaces, they could do it anywhere.

I’m leaning toward the idea of drone delivery being a bit dubious. Off the top of my head I can see all kinds of issues. Wind and weather come to mind. Seems like it would be limited to a fair weather service. I see that long cord for lowering the box being problematic. There will definitely be issues with that getting tangled up on something and crashing the drone. If this became commonplace I think noise would become an issue. For commodity items it also seems limited to suburban locations where there’s room for the delivery, but the region needs to also have sufficient density to make the deliveries economically viable, and those seem contradictory. I think a better application of the tech would be delivery of more critical items. Emergency medical materials for rural locations, etc.

The main constraint seems to be the weight limit. That severely limits the practicality of it. If they could deliver 50lbs by drone, this would truly become the ultimate delivery method.
@Henkerhaus4 ай бұрын
These drones are a hybrid between an airplane and a helicopter. They can hover for takeoff and delivery, but fly as an airplane for speed and efficiency during transit. Good idea, but 3 lb limit has pretty limited usability. It would be interesting to know the all in running cost per delivery. I’m assuming that there is a range limit depending on your proximity to a store. As others have pointed out, weather could be a constraint for delivery. But, 15 min delivery time with no driver required is fairly convenient.
@marcuslinton3104 ай бұрын
I doubt they have stats yet for overall cost factors. The price to buy one, of course, but have they been around long enough to determine longevity and durability. $3.99 per drone delivery seems like a long haul to see any payoff.

I envision the utopian future as a drone delivery of a pizza and a 6-pack directly onto my lap while lounging next to my pool. Wait a minute...it's here now!
@Streaky1000014 ай бұрын
I think this is a really cool idea, but I think it's a little impractical in a lot of circumstances. It's pretty rare that I need to buy just a single item, and usually buying like that is more expensive than buying in bulk. A can of coke, for example, works out cheaper if you buy a multi-pack, then just grab one out of the fridge when you want it, rather than buying an individual can each time you want one. I think it'll probably get used a lot earlier on just due to the novelty of it, I mean, who doesn't want a drone to come to their house and deliver stuff, but quite quickly I think that'll wear off as people realize having to have stuff shipped 3lbs at a time is a bit of a hassle. I can definitely see it coming in handy for those moments when you suddenly realize you forgot something you really needed, the speed with which it can deliver is pretty handy for that. I mean, say you're in the middle of cooking a meal, and you realize you're missing an ingredient, with these drones it can be with you without need to stop cooking and start over after going to the shop. I just don't know if there will be enough demand there for it to be worthwhile... does that situation occur regularly enough? I'm a little concerned on the aviation side of this. You say it has ADS-B in, but not out. Not all aircraft are required to carry ADS-B, most general aviation aircraft not operating in the airspace types where it's mandatory don't need it. (Obviously, some still will due to criteria around the specifics of the aircraft, but most GA stuff will avoid falling into this I think) That means, potentially, you could have an aircraft without ADS-B flying around that wouldn't be seen by these drones. Obviously, if the drones are only operating up to 400ft, and over populated areas, there should always be at least 100ft altitude offset... but 100ft isn't really much, I'd be uncomfortable having a drone that close I think. I don't know..... I just..... see and avoid is the basic precaution to avoid incidents, and these drones presumably don't have that basic ability to see in the same way a human pilot does.
@marcuslinton3104 ай бұрын

Range and capacity for "drones" (or SUAS - Small Unmanned Aircraft System) is definitely an issue, but presumably once this is proven out they'll put money in to increased range.
