What really helps me is to get past the counts and just listen for the raw rhythm to internalize the musicality faster. BA-da-da, ba-dum-pa-DUM -- BA-da-da, ba-dum-pa-DUM -- it allows your brain to push the movements into the subconscious and focus on the other aspects of your performance.

I was wondering if you could help me with a question. Would you know if you are better with the basic flat full sole type shoes or better with the split soles shoes for clogging tap.. I know split soles allow dancers more flexibility, but I don't know to much about the differences, so not sure whether they last as long either. Do you have any advice on this please. Excellent clear awesome demonstrations by the way. Really appreciate it and your time in doing it all!
@taptopiaofficial2 жыл бұрын

Can anyone tell me why the time step starts on the 8 count? This is really hard for me to get. I want to start on the 1 count- I mean who starts a number on the last beat? Why isn't it just rephrased to start on the hop?
@taptopiaofficial6 жыл бұрын
Hey there - thanks for the comment! I totally understand what you're saying - many people prefer to begin the time step on count 1 instead, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with doing it this way. I'd recommend having an understanding of different phrasing options though - it's very common in the tap world to begin the time step on the 8, so it would be worth knowing. But, certainly don't feel you need to disregard what you've learned about the time step beginning on the 1 count. I hope this helps, and all the very best :)

I find it's hard to make a clear sound when doing a hop, I have to jump much higher than him if I want it to sound like a "tap" instead of a "stamp". any tips?
@taptopiaofficial5 жыл бұрын
Yes that's a common problem. On some shoes, the toe tap lifts a little bit off the ground and may struggle to make contact when you're landing. I'd experiment with it, and notice how you're landing. If you want, you could also get the toe part of your tap built up with a double sole, to make the tap more likely to connect with the ground.

how many repetitions before the break? 4? 6?

Hi Leticia - with this example, in order to keep the 8-count phrasing, 2 or 6 repetitions followed by the break would be best (this will add up to a total of 16 or 32 counts respectively) 🙂

I thought the single time step was STOMP HOP step flap step
@taptopiaofficial6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely - there are many variations on the Time Step, and in many places throughout the world, it starts with a Stomp. Over many years of teaching, I've found this to be the best pattern for beginners to learn first. Then, the pattern can easily be altered to start with a Stomp, or to start on alternate counts, or any other variations that exist. I hope this helps, and thanks for the comment! :)

I did tap dancing for years, up until very recently, and I mainly watched this video because I had changed schools at one point and the timestep at the new school was completely different... The first one taught off a syllabus, and was exactly the same as this (except we also had a "basic" timestep without the shuffle and the double didn't have a flap, but a tap instead so it was only one extra beat) and now I'm happy to know that I was taught the usual way the first time 😂 And I loved the tutorial, even though it felt strange to me listening to you describe the difference between a flap and a shuffle because for me, I already knew all that stuff by the time I learned timesteps, and I forgot there are other people out there who start with no knowledge at all 😂 (which is still great btw guys keep at it)

As an old hoofer myself, I'm loving this very clear breakdown of classic tap steps! I wonder if there's a dedicated channel to just time steps? The first one I learned was the Buck, which starts with a stomp, then a spank (leaving heel down from the stomp). I think it's the one that many non-tap entertainers imitate but without the spank. I teach my beginner students this one as their first, then adding to make a double, triple and double triple. Like you said, there are bazillions of variations, and that's what makes these so much fun!

I appreciated the slow breakdown for the time step but got lost with the double and triple time step- wishing it had been broken down as well as the first single ---

Hi Liz! Thanks for your your feedback ☺ This video is only a brief introduction - I'd recommend checking out the Just TAP 'Advanced Beginner' course at justtapdance.com - we dive much deeper there 👍 Hope to see you in the course, and wishing you all the very best!

btw. I am working on a video for a top 5 hardest (top 5 hardest tap moves of all time) What moves do YOU think are really hard!?
@taptopiaofficial6 жыл бұрын
Oooo...good question! I'll have a think about it. There's a few jumping tricks that come to mind, as well as that tricky 3 beat shuffle (not sure if it has a name!).
@CirqueitOfficial6 жыл бұрын
The 3 beat shuffle is actually one of my specialties. Its called a "Super-Shuffle" (not kidding)! I also mastered a 4 beat super-shuffle, and have created my own variation, a 5 beat super shuffle That last one (the 5 beat) is on the list :-) besides that I'm definitely putting the "Pullback+ wing combo alternated" as one of the hardest moves there are. And of course... Colin Dunne's quadrouple airheel clap that I've never seen ANYONE else but him do!! Yikes!!! p.s I teach my students the time step the same way you do. but after the 3rd, I add a double 3rd where BOTH feet do triplets and after that I do a 4th time step variation where we do the "supershuffle 4 beat". and ofcourse double 4 where BOTH feet do 4 beat super shuffles... its hard as heck!

+Cirque-it Is there an online resource for learning the super shuffle do you know please? Thanks

Hi i have a question is it possible to learn this without tap shoes?
@taptopiaofficial4 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed! Tap shoes aren't required to begin with. But once you've made the decision to commit to tap, a pair of shoes are a great investment :)
@mickibirch35713 жыл бұрын
I find its best for me to write down the combination. Then I can go at my own pace. Ive learned many steps. I have about 6 pairs of shoes Ive gotten at the thrift shops. (Maybe I can get a friend to tap w me)This is so good for getting my body & mind moving. Im also working on ballet & the French language. Gotta stay busy during pandemic.
