Hot Fuzz is the cinematic equivalent of a perfectly executed roundhouse kick to the face. It's got more twists and turns than a corkscrew potato, and more laughs per minute than a stand-up comedian on helium. If you don't laugh, cry, or quote this movie by the end, you might be dead inside. Watch at your own risk (of uncontrollable giggling). Hope you guys enjoy our movie reaction to HOT FUZZ!!

This is the only reaction out of the ones I've seen that picked up on the guns resembling wings, to play on Angel's name. And while Angel of Death is fucking metal read of that, especially with the literal pale horse, but I always saw Nick as more of an Angel of Justice or maybe Angel of Vengeance kinda deal. Because, as Hannah pointed out, they don't actually kill people, and also that's what angels did, the ones that were of the "flaming sword" type usually - they brought justice and vengeance!

I live in a village in the North of England: we do season our food. Not sure about all the locals, though. I lived in a seaside town before this, and the fellow next door literally wore a hat in winter, refused to turn the lights on, never bought new clothes, hated everybody but was fairly kind, loved taking pictures of trains, and never seasoned anything. Before that, a large ton (closer to a small city), and before that -- Leeds of all places (actually, just where we had major riots and Muslim population in Harehills. I lived there around 2010 onwards, when it was mostly Jews and black people (dating back to the 1960s or so) and some Europeans and native English. By 2015, it was mostly hardcore Muslims and Eastern Europeans and some black (often always at war with each other, and lots of crime and drugs) due to the migrant crisis of 2014, and this simply being the location they chose, I guess. The town I was in after that is also not going well for the same reasons circa 2019-2024. The small town I went to around 2020 had very few such issues, but was a big tourist location). The village I now live in (and will die in unless something really weird happens, or they somehow magically take away my house) only has 800 people, with a core population on the central road (well, two primary roads) of 200. It's mostly people escaping the cities, farmers, and life-long natives. I love it, for the most part. It's as close to healthy living and good family ties and no crime and wonderful skies and green fields as you can get without going full Unabomber with a cabin in the woods (not that this even made him happy: he actually gave an interview later, where he fully admits that all his anti-culture, rational writings were merely a mask, hiding his hatred and true intentions, which was pure chaos. Of course, lots of people happily live in the woods or a hippie lifestyle, which is fine by me, just as some (though not many) people actually like city life and seeing so many people each day and all the shops and buildings, etc. There's a reason most rich and powerful people don't live in cities, they just work there and stay part-time in penthouses, far above the streets. It's almost the same reasons why estates and halls and manor houses, etc. are far away from the cities, including the fictional Wayne Manor).

I always found it hilarious that the plot implies that the NWA has been using Old Arthur Webley's farm as a dumping ground for their weapons (hence him randomly finding them), while also making a layered meta joke with the sea mine. It wasn't uncommon to find unexploded bombs from Kent to Oxford, let alone on the Continent, but just finding an old *sea mine in a field in Gloucestershire was such a stupidly heightened and specific joke that I couldn't help but love it. 😂

@@shawnmiller4781 Shoot. Okay, so, here's my misunderstanding: honestly, I thought all contact mines in that style were magnetized to some extent because I expected the... What do they call them, Hertz Horns? I thought they could get so corroded with seawater that the "bump" didn't always matter if they sat for too long, so the mines still needed a little extra force, and that was why galvanizing became so important. No, that's my bad, I just thought these models still had at least some magnetic pull to assist. I amended the comment for the magnet part but I'm leaving all of this added context because it's just good for the correction. 😅

There is no suggestion that Webley's guns came from the NWA at all, they are just the kind of thing a crotchetty old farmer might have stashed away from years of his family collecting them in wartime etc. They're covered in dust and Webley makes no comment about them not being his. Also, the NWA seem to be more than capably armed as it is. Webley's gun stash is just a convenient way to introduce some non-standard issue weaponry into the final battle. Webley is a well-known UK gun manufacturer btw.

Hannah, no joke what you are describing in the beginning with the 'two big gulps' is the textbook definition of OCD. People think OCD is just liking your pencils facing the same direction, or or organizing your closet by color, but its not any of those. It's specifically characterized by a illogical but overpowering "sense of doom", where you fully believe that if you dont act upon the urge then something "bad" will happen, even though it doesn't make any sense. This movie takes 4 locations at max and turns it into a full tilt story. Simon is a genius at knowing how to frame a very large story into a small setting, thus utilizing the most amount of background and secondary characters, every extra actor is used for a reason. This is true stage play and artisan ship that reverberates throughout his catalogue. He’s genuinely a great film maker.

The level of detail they put into this one movie is astounding. The song playing on the radio as Mr Skinner drives past the scene after the house exploded and was on fire. The board with words describing the way the one sergeant behaves at the start of the film when introduced to Nicholas Angel. "Splat the Rat" just before the death of Tim Messenger from having his head crushed (going "splat" as one might say). The call backs in dialogue and background bits from start to finish are a masterclass in detailing out a story. It's part of why this movie holds up to multiple viewings and is still just as fun and funny on the 12th watch as it was on the first.

My name is Alan Canon, I am from Louisville, Kentucky, and I was trained in cave exploration by James Wells, himself the son of Oliver Craig Wells, grandson of H. G. Wells, and himself (Oliver Craig) a pioneering cave diver in Wookey Hole Cave in the Mendip Hills, just short, on the river Axe, of the town of Wells, Somerset, where this movie was shot. It is the only English town I have ever had time to explore at length. One pleasure I had when Hot Fuzz came out was that it reminded me of that town of Wells: imagine my astonishment to discover that this movie was shot in pretty much the only town in England that this Kentuckian ever had a few hours to explore on his own. I am safely back in Kentucky, but if I ever make it back to the UK again, I will go back to Wells. And so should you, and even if you don't, read up on the town of Wells, and the UK county of Somerset. It is a very beautiful place. One example: the fountain seen in Wells in a few shots in Hot Fuzz is an artesian well: it is fed, under pressure, by the surrounding caves. As a result, the high street in Wells is kept washed completely clean by sparkling cave water, flowing down the gutters. Water of a quality that you could bend and drink. Sorry to go off on it but, goddamn it, British people, your land is beloved by more than just you, and in my case, in great detail and from the experience of having trod on as much as I could. I hope you can understand the respect and love that some of us Americans feel for the sceptred isle that gave us Shakespeare and Newton and Lyell and Darwin and Faraday and Turing and Monty Python and so much more.

Note for your girl: that's an old sea mine! During WWII, the U-boat fleet, which dominated much of the battle of the Atlantic (which was almost a war itself, lasting almost the entire length). One historian wonderfully calls it 'thunder from below'. It was very important for both Germans and English, as Germans radically cut off food supply to the island, and the English finally crushed the U-boats. Anyway, much of the early action by German forces involved mining convoy routes and ports around Britain. Initially, contact mines (requiring a ship to physically strike a mine to detonate it) were employed. That's pretty much what this one is and why it has those pins sticking out (which you can also see in Finding Nemo, and other movies, if I can recall).
