From around 1988, this is a multi-system VCR that will play all the formats, but will not convert them.

I have a jvc HR -J71 ms from the late 90s with the same problem .Always thinks a tape inside with tape indicator on with no tape .But as you insert the tape it works fine . Apparently this is a common JVC issue . I used exactly the same vcr you have back in the 90s it was nice with awesome picture quality . Thank you for the video 👍

Wow, PAL looks gorgeous next to that LP NTSC tape you started with. We didn't get the coolest VCRs but at least we got the better picture!

These problems must be very common to these jvcs from the late 80's. My jvc hrd-330 had the same problems. Plus the head rotary transformer was trashed.

My JVC HR-475ea is also a multisystem I’ve played both PAL and NTSC Tapes in it and it works very well (but it is a very fussy VCR). I’m not sure though if the TV I was using though was liking the NTSC tape a lot or if it was just the tape being old and flickering now and then because I had the colour system on the TV Set to auto and the VCR manually to NTSC 3.58. Still I was very surprised with how well it played the NTSC Tape and just how different it looked compared to PAL. I just feel it’s best to watch NTSC Tapes using a proper NTSC Setup, not a PAL VCR which can playback in PAL60 for NTSC.

There was a huge demand back in a day in eastern europe and russia for this model. Great model, lots of systems, ability to program recording, and it supported eu voltage, so I believe it was not strictly meant to be sold on JP and US market, but also europe.

Also, only UK (system I) has a UHF tuner only (they did have VHF when they had the 405 line system) but the rest of Europe (PAL BG/DK) used VHF and UHF as well.

I broadcasts were broadcasted in UHF and VHF in EIRE

I´ve got the same machine. What a cool unit. Mine is in a mint condition but needs a recap somewhere around tracking control IC, since the tracking is unstable. Blue Sanyo caps are the usual suspect as far as tracking is concerned. I´ll have to look at it.

I never knew vhs lp ran at slower speed i always thought it was just much thinner tape and there was more of it per cassette.
@probnotstech Жыл бұрын
There were actually cassettes that used thinner tape and had more of it. T-120 was a normal tape with 2 hours (120 minutes) of tape at SP. T-160 had 160 minutes and thinner tape. There was also T-180 and T-200 using even thinner tape. You could mix tape speed (SP, LP, EP/SLP) with tape length (T-120, T-160, T-180, etc) to fit varying amounts.

The answer for the plug is that there are some countries that use the European style antenna ports but the same style American plug, China being one of them. Sorry for so many comments but I'm writing as I'm watching the video.
@probnotstech3 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. I figured it wasn't installed after the fact in North America, since the individual wires from the cord are blue and brown.

I think the reason for the colour / b/w switch was due to the fact not all B/W TVs had a black level clamp, it just gave a better image result but why you had a VCR and a B/W TV is beyond me (in the context of cost) All colour TVs have a colour killer due to most of the earlier ones being dual standard, meaning B/W was still widely used, and received on colour TVs and it was never done away with. Could be wrong in the black level clamp thing but I’m fairly certain thats the case. Also love the VCR, it has a tiny bit of a audio hi-fi look to it - but in a good way. And of course the Hitachi

Interesting to know about the Black Level clamp. I had no idea there was a color/B&W selector switch, at first I thought there was a fault on the chroma board!

Looking at the service manual, this does have an NTSC tuner so an adapter for the antenna input socket is the only thing you need.
@probnotstech3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I downloaded the service manual afterwards. Very cool, though I'll never use that part of it anyway. I was trying to figure out this weird issue from the video. The tape insertion sensor, tape end and tape start sensors all work fine. The mechacon chip is getting all good signals, good power. All voltages are correct with no noise, mode switch signals are good....

You need to switch the tuner to "M" for it to work with North American tuners.

Is it possible to make the counter shine more (where is the time)? I have the same model but it is very dark.
@probnotstech2 жыл бұрын
These displays can wear our and get dim over time, so it could just be worn out. Another thing to check is the -28v going to the IC that drives the display - make sure that voltage isn't low (that would require finding the schematic).

I am suprised there are prerecorded video tapes NTSC with LP modus( 16,67 mm/s ), like this cartoon. The deck may playback 3 speed tapes. However, the VCR may recording NTSC video signal only in SP modus( 33,35 mm/S), and SLP/EP modus( 11,12 mm/s ) For SECAM colour signals, it is possible to recording in MESECAM modus or SECAM( France), modus, with choice speed rec. SECAM France has poor quality in SP, and LP modus is WORSE ! Analogue tuner of this VCR is only for CCIR B/G norm.

Pre-recorded tapes in LP speed were very uncommon, same with pre-recorded tapes in EP/SLP. This was usually only the very cheap kids tapes sold in discount stores - like the one in this video. As far as I'm aware, every NTSC VCR that supports EP/SLP playback will also support LP playback. I think only Panasonic/Matsushita made VCRs kept supporting NTSC LP recording though as it was very uncommon by the 90s.
