Jyc Row - Queen Opaline (Make Your Mark (generic) Alicorn Villain)

Heya everyone!
So... I watched the 8 episodes of My Little Pony: Make Your Mark's chapter 2 on Netflix recently. Honestly, I think it's really okay - there are a few weird things regarding the animation and all but, still, it was pleasant to watch overall.
Though, I have two things about the series that I - personally - don't really like.
First of all is the connection with G4. I mean, that is just my opinion, but even before the release of the pilot movie last year I wasn't fan of having G4 in G5 because I thought it'd have been great to have something really fresh and new.
However, for obvious marketing reasons, G4 was incorporated in G5. At first it was quite nice to see some easter-egg and the movie clearly showed us that G5's story was tied to G4's story.
But the more we moved forward (comic and series), the more there were connections between both G4 and G5 and, in my opinion... it was a bad idea and it was done really badly because there are a lot of incoherence and things that doesn't add up.
Though, I can go beyond that as I'll now consider G5 as an alternate universe of G4, so nothing G5 does has to make sense towards G4.
The second point is Opaline. Yeah, the very same character I just made a track for! :D
Again, this is my personal opinion and everyone is welcome to disagree with me on that, but I really don't know what happened with her.
At first, I thought the over-saturation of her colours was an animation error in the first chapter/special we had, but seems like it's the natural colour she has (and I don't know why anyone on the team thought "yup, that's good, that over-saturated purple clearly doesn't hurt one's eyes).
But now we had more screentime about her and, well... so far, she sounds like the most generic and classic villain I ever saw.
We'll see in the future how it goes and what's her background story but - I'm sorry, really - she really feels like a bad edgy alicorn OC. And I did made a heckton of Alicorns OC for Infinite Eclipse so I don't know if it my place to speak about it but, still - the ambition of Opaline is basic, and she doesn't really have a "reason" except "I wanna be powerful, mwahahahaha"
But hey, we'll see, I'm just a grumpy old Jyc and maybe I'm completely wrong about all I said ahah xD
Now you'll ask "But why did you made a theme for her if you don't like her ?"
We'll, it's mainly because I said I'll do the villain a theme, even before the pilot movie was released, and I kept my word and did one.
However, I won't lie - it's certainly not my best track and it's kinda generic (so, hey, I'm in-theme! :D)

Honestly, I don’t mind G5 having a connection to G4; þat being said, I do feel like þey went about it in þe wrong way. Having G5 take place in a far-flung future past G4 has probably left a bad taste wiþ a few fans, and I can’t blame þem. Many þings in G4 have been retconned in all but name, leaving SO many questions about “What þe hell happened‽” Personally, I would’ve enjoyed it so much more had þey made G4 into a legend for G5; a story told by someone who dreams of a better time and told þose stories to make ponies þink about it, while leaving it ambiguous as to wheþer G4 actually happened in þis world. But cementing G5 in þe same world as G4 was a foolish move, especially so early on. Þey’ve given þemselves a lot of questions to answer wiþ seemingly not a lot to gain from it. If you want my personal headcanon, I saw G4’s cameo in þe movie as just a story; a tale of myþical ponies doing legendary deeds togeþer, all to set an example of how much better we are togeþer… just like what it did for us. Þen Make Your Mark confirmed it wiþ þe Twilight Sparkle hologram - NOT in her princess form from þe finale, but I digress - and my frustrations return. Despite all of þat, I do genuinely enjoy þe series so far. Þis is þe first time I get to be þere when it all began, and I’m excited to see how þis new generation plays out!

I think G5 is garbage so far. It’s nothing like G4 and feels like your average generic kids show. If G4 didn’t exist, I feel no one would’ve even batted an eye at G5. I’ll even go so far as to say morally the show is misdirected. Either it feels like there is no lesson to be learned from the generic plots, or the lesson is drowned out by plenty of morally questionable things the characters do that aren’t addressed. The animation is terrible. It looks bland, and most of the designs are so bad (Opaline and Sparky being prime examples)

I think the connection between G4 and G5 is not good, too much contradiction with the end of G4, like Twilight seen still young when u know that she can live century and she's much high in the end of the previous generation. And i wondering what is the purpose of this new MLP😭😭😭

My humble opinion is G4 had some ambitions and stories to tell to kids, and even relatable situation for adults with humor. Some episodes are great as a genuine animated sitcom/adventure show. G5 is bland, bland kid show. very generic.

One thing that I think is done well with Opaline is that the depiction of her abuse towards Misty is portrayed realistically. It's not mustache twirling, evil stepmother villainy, it's pretty accurate to real life emotional abuse. I am surprised that they decided to show a toxic relationship that accurately and it makes my heart hurt for Misty.

Gotta admit - I absolutely love Misty and feel really, really sorry for her. So, honestly? While the motivation and attitude of Opaline is really generic, they did manage to make us hate her for what she does to Misty so, in a way... she's well written? Aaaah, I don't know anymore xD

@@witherslayer-7315 Nightmare Moon has.. what ? Five minutes of screen time ? Chrysalis is a way more developed character : she has mannerism, she has a somehow reasonable reason to her evilness (to maintain her brood) and some pettiness to make her an interesting and funny antagonist. Chrysalis is a great antagonist by the fact with just a tiny push in the story you could show her as justified in her action , or a dramatic fallen character. There are deepness to tap in the character's lore. - in the show Tirek is pretty basic : he wants poWAAAH (and domination), why ? who cares. The comics explains that, but it's in the comic. Still, the character again is interesting because of funny dialogs with others antagonists, how he manipulates Discord, and so on : there is some drama. but honestly, Tirek is only truly fun in the episodes with Chrysalis and Cozy Glow. The duo with Cozy Glow is genius. They should have added more. - Discord is the perfect antagonist ever. Not truly evil, so you can do any situation with him, a unreliable ally or a crazy friend ? a demented wizard or a deeply wise entity ? a bully to Twilight or a mentor ? Discord can be everything of that and STILL be sympathetic, so you can add him in stories without antagonizing the characters and spectators. Honestly, Discord is perfect for a kid show : how you manage a toxic but still lovable friend ? by putting _limits_. and he was hilarious, played by a great actor.

Aside from her textbook abusive relationship with Misty, that other people already brought up, there are some intriguing things about Opaline, that I'm curious to know more about: - It seems that she's not a real pony, based on Misty's comment that she's "made of fire". So she might have an interesting origin story. - She claims that Twilight stole her magic and put it in the crystals, and then put a cloaking spell around all of Equestria so she wouldn't find it, but it seems that she doesn't fully understand what Twilight did, and is trying to piece it together herself. - She thinks she's supposed to rule Equestria and possess all magic because she's an alicorn. She sees herself less as a greedy conqueror like Tirek or Cozy Glow or the Storm King, and more as a queen reclaiming her rightful place and restoring the natural order of things. So in a way her ideology seems like a deconstruction of the alicorns from G4, and how they are both physically and politically much more powerful than the other ponies just because of what they are.

In Tell Your Tale, she refers to herself as a "Fire Alicorn" We don't really know what that might mean. Is she made of magical fire? Is she an Alicorn that specializes in fire magic?

@@82dorrin She says that because she wants the magic of the dragon fire. We saw what it transformed her into with just a little bit. That looks like a "fire alicorn" to me. She didn't care to bring up the idea of fire or anything related to fire until she realized the power of dragon fire. Still don't think it's related to her backstory or what species she is, only what she wants to become.

I’m loving G5 so far. Opalene feels really accurate to a toxic person in how she’s acts her manipulative nature is easy for the audience to spot but it’s not so obvious that we wonder how the Mane 5 would miss it. It’s amazing!

Honestly, I think that the idea of a evil alicorn can be really good if they managed it properly (Not a corrupted alicorn, like Nightmare Moon or Daybreaker, who are good alicorns turned bad temporarely due corruption. I mean a actually evil alicorn). In G4, they don't really give us too much information about them (as far I remember), like why they are so powerful, what happened to them, why they can become corrupted, why some alicorns are born and others are made (and if there is a difference between born alicorns and normal ponys who become alicorns). I hope that now they give us at least a bit more information about them. Also, the idea of the "last alicorn" (Al least for what we know) being an evil queen have so much potential. I mean, we have a villan character, who is the only one of a race we know for it's power, mistery and royal blood. It's a shame how they made her look as the classic "I want more power and friendship is garbage" villan, and I hope that they improve her in the future or al least, give us a good backstory for her.

Honestly I wouldn't expect much lore regarding that since they do a very bad job linking both generations (lots of plot-holes and many things they just forgot). It's indeed a shame they didn't gave us lore regarding the past of Alicorns BUT on my end I'm fine with it, as I can make a whole original story on my own with Infinite Eclipse ahah xD Also, last Alicorn, I wonder where's Cadance and Flurry Heart (as an alicorn-born, shouldn't her be immortal as well?). Though I hope she'll have a good backstory but I fear she'll just *poof* in the air when she'll be vanquished (though I'd like her a bit more with a good backstory, because her design sure doesn't help me like her ahah)

I've heard that she's more so connected to the idea of alicorns having a natural right to rule, so she may well be the connection to the past concerning alicorns. Though she might also connect to how magic evolved since the most apparent change is earth pony magic changing into something more active and the second being negative emotions punching holes in the universe, where before it took a masive amount of hatred to bring out the wendigos.

One thing that I enjoy about Opaline's character is that her villainous depiction is _accurate._ Her psychopathic behaviors are surprisingly realistic, and the way she inflicts emotional abuse against Misty is what actual emotional abuse looks like.

I honestly think that because of generation 4 that she believes Alicorns are the superior race and rule over other ponies. I mean every princess is an alicorn. Alicorns have wings and a horn. They can fly and do magic. They live in castles. While Earth ponies back then didn't really have any magic and if they did they have a small amount of it and it didn't really get used that much. Pegaside can fly and live in the clouds. A unicorn can use magic to live on the clouds be able to fly around travel through time and they're well known for living in the best conditions. Back in G4 there was inequality between the races.sure they didn't hate each other or fear each other. But there was a clear inequality between the races and which one was "Superior " than the other rather be which houses they live in or what they can do or just having an extra body part like a horn or a wing. Which why I think she sees herself as Superior and everyone is beneath her.

I mean, I can more or less understand why she feels superior - there's that one episode where Sunny is taken seriously (worse, no matter what she says it'll be completely believed by anyone) when she's an Alicorn, and then when she's not she's ignored. The ponies themselves put the Alicorns almost as their almighty superiors so, well... that's something (they also don't seems to be surprised by that lol)

For living conditions, it might just be closer to how their ancestors built their civilizations before unifing as the unicorns found how to live in the mountains, the pegasi on the clouds, and the earth ponies on flat terrains(given that when the tribes were seperate, they had a delicate power balance, it would've been difficult to not slip up and branch out in architecture and as they unified, it still seems better off to keep to their fields of expertise when rebuilding each of their cities in the new lands where those with prior knowlege of their careers already have a reputation, whether it's agriculture, weather creation, or the manipulation of magic).

I wouldn't brand Opaline as "generic" just yet, King Sombra and Queen Chrysalis were practically the same as her in terms of attitude and we love them as villains all the same. I would wait till her arc ends to truly judge whether or not she is a good or a bad villain.

To be fairly honest, Chrysalis showed her goals at the beginning, which was to give food to her people, which is an understandable motivation Regarding Sombra, well... to be, he's as generic as Opaline. Though, after chatting with some peeps here in the comments, the big pluevalue of Opaline is her relationship with Misty imo

Personally, I think the G4 and G5 linkage having so many missing points and plotholes that people are mentioning is probably on purpose. We know that both stories of the past told by Discord, Sunny, and Misty aren't the whole truth of the matter. Both Discord and Sunny's version of the story is simply "Twilight sealed away magic to stop the arguing and everyone argued anyway and that was that" meanwhile Misty's story proclaimed Opaline to be the "Savior of the ponies" when in no way is that true. Both stories have been passed down for so long and have been hidden for so long that it probably suffers a really bad case of telephone. Twilight revealing herself in the hologram is another piece that helps a little bit in filling some of those gaps, but still leaving out a lot of information (and it doesn't help that it gets glossed over so quickly). However if you pay attention, she mentioned using all her strength to keep the magic from landing in Opaline's grasp, and it's made clear that Twilight was successful atleast in keeping Opaline from gaining that power. If I had to make an educated guess on what actually happened based on the information that we have so far, Opaline could've tried to steal the magic for herself while the bond between ponykind was weakened, similar to how the big three villains tried to do so beforehand. With no one agreeing with eachother and Opaline about to steal the magic, Twilight had to make a really desperate move and seal all the magic away in order to keep Opaline from taking it, and Opaline could've imprisoned her later not long after. Twilight sacrificed herself in order to save the magic with hopes that ponykind could come together once more and reunite magic and friendship once again, something that was lost long ago along with the princess of friendship herself. That's atleast my take on it though. On a side note, I agree that the color palette for Opaline seemed too striking at first, but what helped me get past it is that it does fit with her character. All the other Alicorns had warm/cool and comforting colors, pleasing and reassuring to the eye which fits their characters really well. Opaline is the opposite, she is cold, evil, and striking. Her purple color is a direct contrasts to Twilight's light and reassuring purple color. Opaline gives off more of a shadow Alicorn theme and I find it pretty neat in my opinion! That's atleast my take on it all, for now we have to wait and see what new information they come out with in the next installment of episodes. Overall I really liked this theme you made for her, as it fits her really well! I can't wait to see what you come out with next! ^^

I still haven't watched the entirety of Make Your Mark: Chapter 2 yet, but so far I feel that Misty is a more compelling character than Opaline. It's almost like she's in Lena de Spell's situation but also has Rapunzel's personality 🥰

Great work!! i agree with you pal, i must say... that so many people wouldn't whatch G5 or stay in the fandom if nothing (regarding G4 it's included 🙄) it reminds me when many people hated The Lion Guard, just because the main characters of the 2 first movies didn't appear for more time (face slap) just by reading the title you'll know it hasn't anything to be with something from the past, but in the end, i like how the history goes, G4 characters as easter eggs or guide lines, i hope in the future its stays like that, G5 will bring us that refresh of something new and special. Regarding Opaline and Misty... i love Misty who wouldn't? and i hope Opaline has a better background story than the stereotype "i was one SUPER villain but i was defeated momentarily" (Grogar in there by the way) And as always i love the song!! it's perfect for Opaline, strong but simple to understand xD (the character) glory from the past hidden in the notes 😋 anyway thanks for reading if you get till here x3

The problem here is that the G4 is now much more than just an easter-egg. It seems to be a continuity BUT with a lot of plot-hole. And yeah, Misty is absolutely great and I'm starting to think that Opaline as been made so Misty will be much more appreciated - and I like it like that ahah

I remember seeing the reveal/sneak peek of the character and legit thought she was wearing a mask due to the over-saturation, but I was wrong 🫠 I think you have a right to speak on her “Edgy Alicorn OC” vibe, because your alicorn OCs are actually good (you put thought and care into writing them and none of them are similar to each other, which makes it interesting) Though yeah, the theme is generic, but it does fit the character 👏🏼

Myself, I am loving it. I know her motivation so far seems "mwahahaha power", but I think it's more that the storyline isn't done so her full story isn't done yet. She was referred to as an alicorn of fire, so what does that mean? That's something to address later. This is just chapter 2 of a bigger story. I am gonna withhold character criticism on her until her story is fully told. Still...biding her time, spying on enemies first, playing it cool until ready to strike? She's already better a villain than Nightmare Moon was. As for the track? Love it :D

Protecc Misty #justiceformisty But yeah, fundamentally we are seeing only part of an unfinished story. Also, Tell Your Tale is great goofy fun if you want silly snippets of pony

Great work! As for G5, I like it. There are some things I think they could have handled better, the connection to G4 might have been a mistake (I personally don't mind, but many fans do, it seems) and they should explore the world more (not just stay at MTB) but I love the characters, their interactions and the plot with the villains is intriguing. Personally Opaline strikes me as a classic MLP villain, she definitely has some potential. Lets see how the writers handle it.

Unpopular opinion time: I frickin love Opaline. I think the "evil mustache twirling villain" thing was done on purpose. It's pretty clear we aren't supposed to take it seriously, the show seems pretty self aware about it too. To me, it seems that Opaline is more of a parody of those types of villains, and I dig that. In any case, I really don't understand why people are upset about Opaline being "generic" when Nightmare moon literally exists. And everyone loves her. Honestly, the only *real* reason people like nightmare moon so much is because she looks cool and what she means for Luna's character. Nightmare moon on her own though? Now SHE is a generic and pretty mid villain. One that the show takes completely seriously. Not to mention how underused she was. I kinda wish the fandom would stop pretending that Nightmare moon is anything more than a Plot device. But that's just my opinion I guess. For me, Opaline Is Nightmare moon, but good. Aside from her personality, I think she works well in the story too. Her dynamic with Misty is bitter sweet. It seems like Misty actually really cares about Opaline, but fails to realize that has abused her basically her whole life. We don't know exactly how old Misty was When Opaline saved her, but I'm willing to bet that she was a filly. I mean, It makes the most sense. Misty knows basically nothing about the outside world because of Opaline. She's manipulated her, and it worked because Opaline is all Misty had ever know. So I think both of these characters are very well written. So far at least. Let's just hope G5 doesn't mess it up. Honestly, I think I'd be able to love her more if she had a better design. That's what makes the difference to me if I have to compare her to Nightmare Moon. On a written level, though... well, I don't really think there are many good written villain in MLP but, to be honest, that's to be expected from a kid show, I guess? And yeah, to an extent I'd even say that Opaline works well thanks to Misty (even though Opaline is dispicable to her) and, thanks to Opaline, Misty is a character I really like to G5. There are good and bad regarding that character, but the big down for me is, really, the colours and all - that evil edgy OC design is something that I'm not a fan of (fan-artist makes her more justice than what the show does) And for your last point, yeah... I mean, I stopped thinking forward a long while ago especially because how the lore/characters ended up "meh" in the show and I take that into consideration when I think of Opaline - I don't expect her to have a glow-up with a backstory but I'd love to be wrong

@@JycRow I somewhat agree with the bit about Opaline's design. While I don't think it's as bad as people are saying it is, there's definitely room for improvement. I Think the biggest problem with Opaline's design is the colors. I actually kinda like the white hair, but the color of her coat is just way too oversaturated. Also the green streaks in her mane look really bad, it doesn't work with the color scheme at all. It looks like toothpaste lol. But I like her body type and mane style.

I'm really pleased to see you're a creator that sticks to his own promises! As for the 'Make your mark' series ehm... Boy I'm afraid I'm one of those guy won't barely have anything good to say about it =/. The worst part is that I had quite some high hopes for it after the New generation movie! I am lazy to look for the comics and when I saw the KZbin series having a Steven Universe type of animation quality, I already got disinterested. Turns out me as a Fan of MLP will still to G4 + New generation, nothing that comes after. So yeah: -not the same voices (my biggest disappointment actually because I got a serious crush on Izzy and her new voice repelled me real hard.) -one obligatory mascot that is very annoying -downgrade in the animation (but that was to be expected i guess? Can't have the neat one of the movie for a full 3D animated series), -Only 8 eposides which doesn't sound a lot to me at all, -Opaline (you made a good enough point about her already), -too much moment in which character are being blind for the sake of plot foreshadowing, -Hitch and Pip for some reasons got worse at what they are supposed to be good at?... -Canterlogics where? I don't think in the movie it's said they got dismantled... -Of course the lack of answers about the missing links between G4 and G5, you're probably right in saying it's an alternate universe... -Just happening in maretime bay while I would probably loved to see more of Bridewoods and Zephyr heights. Or like total new locations, because world expansion is great! -Misty... Ehm I'm afraid I didn't get attached to her. -Not a single song that stayed in my head. Well I mean earth magic as a concept is cool, not gonna lie! And it's been said in the comments, the whole matter of toxic relationship between Opaline and Misty is a good point. 1. I'm not sure yet. Honestly, I already know that there will be some track (for example: "Naegissa's Musicbox") or even some songs (for example: "Festival of Sorority") for IEO, in addition to the Primordial Pantheon's themes, but I might also compose some theme for some of the main characters. However, those would be on the second priority plan. 2. Like Aqasha and Nerath (the divinities), there's indeed a third one that I didn't publicly revealed yet (I'll try to keep that for the novel). The three of them form a Trinity. The actions of that third one before and during IEO will explain why she cannot be fully revived the same way as Aqasha and Nerath. That said, that didn't mean she won't appear in IEPF (Prequel's Finale)

I think her destiny is to bring chaos in her world where she only cares about power since she believes Alicorns are the truest rulers of Equestria. She doesn't believe ruling in a good will can solve anything except being a narcissist towards Misty even though she's the queen. I guess she believes that abusing her power could take her into a darkening world. But what about Misty? I mean Misty may betray Opaline since how she's been treating her like not a mother's guide but as a tyrant ruler who cares to make others suffer. But what if Misty has found her newest destiny, not joining Opaline, but the power that she has been giving. Could she have found her evil destiny? Or maybe there will be more legions of doom of the next generation that will soon turn everyone under their dark magic.

Its fine it has a few moments I enjoyed but a few moments made me worry about the writers. To answer all the mysteries they set up they need to be skillfull... but I am not too sure they are... maybe with practice and 2-3 more simple seasons they will be ready to start tackling the set up mysteries. And opaline reminded me a bit of power ranger evil woman who in each episode has to do something. SO we would have a monster of the week. I hope they will dial it back with that a tad.

@@JycRow I don't even like the movie. It may feel new but dead, generic and an absolute distance for writing talent. Twilight Sparkle had to work for 4 or 3 seasons to become an Alicorn. But BOOM! one hour of movie or Sunny!? Twilight had flaws that made her relatable and feel real, but Sunny? Generic highschool girl personally with no flaws, is super kind and almost everyone likes her. Her tasks were too easy. She is a Mary Sue. I'm sorry I just can't help but rant every time I see G5. I like the music here though.
