We are back with Brian today as he makes his bed. Although beds were a luxury not granted to everyone in the seventeenth century, Brian will be showing us how those who had one would have put it together.

I would think bed bugs came from the straw mattress. Thankful for my memory foam 😏

That along with dust and chaff. It makes my sinuses hurt just to think about it.

Love the videos. How would the frame be made?

thank you for the question. The frame would have been made by a joiner (most likely) or a carpenter. Early on, it would likely have been imported, but they were certainly capable of making them in the Colony right from the get-go. The wood for the frame would have been either riven or sawn stock, planed to its finished dimensions. The frame would be assembled with mortice and tenon joints held together by the tension of the ropes. On that specific bed, the panels in the headboard would have been riven, planed, and the edges beveled to fit into grooves cut into the frame with a rabbet plane. ("Rabbet," not "Rabbit." From the French "rabat," a recess.) The decorative grooves running up the legs would have been cut with either a moulding plane or a scratch stock.

Thanks for the information. How many of the settlers would have had these beds, and how much would they have cost in their time?

Unfortunately there is no way of knowing how many bed frames were brought to, made in, or used in Virginia. The best that we can do is point to some of the archaeological evidence of bed frames turned up in the archaeology of Jamestown by the Jamestown Rediscovery Project. Bed frame bolts - historicjamestowne.org/collections/artifacts/bed-bolts/ & Bed frame curtain rings - historicjamestowne.org/collections/artifacts/curtain-rings/ Cost is another difficult one to answer. It seems that so many secondary sources are more than happy with "they were expensive" or "only the gentry could afford them". Which does nothing to relate the actual cost of a bed frame at purchase and completely discounts the growing economic wealth and strength of classes such as the rural yeomanry or the urban burgess, merchants and masters. Most ideal source would be some household ledger that records a purchase, while the next best would be to examine wills that may record an estimated value. John Smith in his 1624 equipment list at least plases the value of bedding materials, the sheets, rugs and canvas for mattresses and bolsters, not including a bed frame, at 1 pound 6 shillings

I'm having trouble keeping my peg rope bed upright while I'm trying to loop the ropes over the pegs. It seems that the bed just fits together and there's no way to keep the sides connected to the headboard and the footboard except for the ropes. Could you please private message me on how to make this bed work correctly? I've had it almost completely strung twice and it has folded itself. And it was taunt. It wasn't loose. I'm thinking that maybe I need to string it diagonal and crisscrossed rather than vertical than horizontal criss-cross.

Imagine how much time he could have saved with just a small thought about his rope management and watching to make sure he wasn't making knots
