How did the common soldiers stay out of the water/mud when it rained? It looks like those tents have no provision to keep rain from running across the ground where the men presumably slept!

Site selection was an important consideration when quartermaster or officer were selecting sites for army encampments, avoiding slopes or uneven ground. Tent set up was also important, that the tent should be staked down to the ground. And when properly staked down close to the ground water intrusion should not be an issue. The wedge shape of the tent does direct water away. It was also not unheard of for tentmates to dig small trenches around the perimeter of their tents to prevent water intrusion. Sometimes though, there were those times were conditions were never going to be ideal. Ideally wrangle a promotion to a commissioned rank and get a better tent with much fewer tent mates.
