There's an even more important reason to determine the composition of the seabed with your lead line; coming to anchor. It helps to know if the ground composition is sand, silt, rocks, shell, etc. because that's all going to determine how well the anchor will hold, or if you're liable to begin dragging - which could end up putting you in dangerous proximity to navigational hazards.
