This made me rant about a part of my past for literally no reason, idk.. sorry lol.. but my take of the song was real so ima leave this reaction alone lol... you gotta enjoy the real right??
Mistakes an all im human and im hungry for the come up like everyone else no matter the time in between. Im able and im grateful for the learning capability and in god i trust my guidance!
I'll say when i release my bio- people are gonna see a side of the united states they wanna ignore, but truth is... i had a very tough childhood and when the real stuff comes out, i just hope people forgive me for telling my side of it.

I wrote a paper on Elliott Smith in highschool and he had a really bad childhood. From what I remember his step dad beat him nearly every day starting at age 3 and may have sexually abused him too. His mother basically chose his step dad over him too and denied most of the abuse when he confronted her. He moved in with his real dad when he was a teenager and got into hard drugs. The song is mostly about addiction/alcoholism from what I understand. The vice or drink is singing to the individual in the story, tempting them to forget the stress of life and sink deeper into the cycle of addiction

And the singer very much struggled with these things, one of the reasons I admire him is because a lot of his songwriting is like this deeply personal exposition of himself, really compelling and beautiful stuff. And it's rare to see such genuine honest expression in art.

no disrespect meant, but if i had been your grandma i would have been proud af when i saw that you and your sisters gave some of your christmas gifts to the neighbors who had less, even though yall were struggling too. i can empathize with her being frustrated by it though because, like you said, you didn’t know y’all were poor. that means grandma went to lengths and effort to make it so.

hilarious that this guy managed to conflate the meaning of this song with suicide just because its melancholic. It literally has nothing to do with suicide or being suicidal. its about being an alcoholic from the theoretical perspective of the alcohol itself.

Elliott Smith is a mood. His guitar playing is top-tier. His songs are very catchy. But, his lyrics are profoundly sad. Which isn't a bad thing, but it is a mood. I had to take a break from Elliott after I bought my first album of his...I was playing it too much. But, I love him. If you've seen the movie Good Will Hunting, then you've heard 5 or 6 of his songs.

So, the interesting thing is to listen to the song BUT keep in mind the singer/narrator is “alcohol” speaking to an alcoholic. Elliott had many demons and alcohol was just one. Keep in mind the one part “Drink up one more time, and I'll make you mine, Keep you apart, deep in my heart, Separate from the rest, where I like you the best”. Alcohol addiction keeps you away from the people you love. As an addict, this resonates with me. 💔

He stabbed himself three times in the chest while drunk and fighting with his girlfriend. Two penetrated his heart Unfortunately people have tried to do the Kurt Cobain/Courtney Love thing and blame his girlfriend but he had been suicidal for years and she was never violent

Yeah Elliott Smith lived his life in extreme pain and eventually did commit suicide. He actually stabbed himself in the heart. Listening to his music is haunting and disturbing on a whole different level, but it's also beautiful and truly genius. I love listening to his music, but I have to moderate it, because you really need to be careful about getting inside of a mind like that.
