I had a bit of a realisation as to why Liger's retirement hit home so hard. Sadly, too often in this business, many of the people we call legends, dont make it out of their 40's-50's. Some don't even make it to 40. Many of those who do still have to wrestle in order to make ends meet despite being broken down and past their prime. To see one of the best, leave, still amazing in the ring, with his dignity, and with such universal LOVE, is genuinely heartwarming. And although its bittersweet that we wont see him in the ring again, it feels so good to know that he gets to ride off into the sunset, having changed pro wrestling for the better.

He is one of the best. And its a sad thing, knowing he wont wrestle anymore but it feels so good that he decide to retire on his own terms, not a serious injury, nothing bad around it, just the time to hang the boots. It will always be sad but with him i hardly cant, he sounds great... Hope the next chapter of his life can be better than the last one

Well, in both cases that timespan is with them performing under that specific character. Liger, or Yamada if you will, had a near 36-year long career, while Taker, or Calaway if you will, will celebrate 34 years as a wrestler this year. Regardless of how their careers developed, with all of their ups and downs, they've both had legendary runs and memorable moments in the history of wrestling.

Liger pretty much singlehandedly helped build the junior division in New Japan over the course of 30 years and I don't think there'd be many who would argue too much if I said that for his whole body of work, he might just be the greatest high-flyer in the history of puro. I don't want to compare two differnet companies but two legends retired this year. Liger January 4th and Undertaker a bout a month ago. One was announced, the other forseen but expected. Regardless of preference, both generated a legendary career (same age, same reputation as one of the nicest guys ever, both have MMA interests, both have legendary entrance songs, both put on astonishing matches, etc). I'm sorry if I offended anyone but it's worth mentioning.
